Questions

The things people ask us first.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives people and businesses in Nigeria one account that holds Naira alongside dollars, pounds and euros, and a set of agents that do the running of it — keeping the books, chasing what is owed, answering customers and paying bills. Nothing leaves an account without the owner’s approval.

Can I hold dollars, pounds and euros in a Pryme account?

Yes. A Pryme account holds Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros side by side on one ledger, each with its own account details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area. You can swap between them at a rate you set, and every currency has its own statement.

What is Spaces?

Spaces is available in Nigeria. It gives a shopper money to spend that can only be spent with a participating business. The business is paid into its Naira account whether or not the shopper repays, because Pryme carries the credit. For the business it is free to join, there is nothing monthly, and the customer’s identity is never shown — only a reference and what it is worth.

What do the agents on a Pryme Business Account do?

Five agents come with the account. The Chief of Staff runs the week and keeps what is stuck moving. Finance watches the money and keeps the books as you trade. Compliance keeps the filings on time and screens what moves. Sales chases what you are owed. Customer Support answers your customers and follows up. Each has a job description, a budget and a ceiling you set, and each one proposes rather than acts — nothing leaves the account without your signature.

How does Pryme Pay work?

Pryme Pay takes payments on your own site or on a checkout page you control. The buyer is given a one-time account number and transfers to it from any bank app or by USSD — no card, no OTP, nothing to type in. The money lands in the same account your agents are running, already matched to the order and already in your books.

What are Savings Boxes?

Savings Boxes are separate pots inside a Pryme account, held in Naira. Flexible Boxes can be withdrawn at any time, Fixed Boxes hold to a date, Investment Boxes hold for longer, and Interest-free Boxes earn nothing by design. A business can use them to ring-fence payroll and the tax it withholds, so that money cannot be spent by accident.

Who holds my money, and is it protected?

Pryme is a financial technology company, not a bank. Accounts and deposits are provided by Solid Allianze Microfinance Bank Limited, which is licensed by the Central Bank of Nigeria and is a member of the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation.

Can I build on Pryme?

Yes. Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives you one account that holds US dollars, pounds sterling and euros beside Naira, with an assistant that runs the account for you and asks before anything moves. Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, and further markets open as each licence lands.

Can I open a Pryme account from outside Nigeria?

Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, subject to verification and approval. Foreign-currency balances are held and converted inside that account, so you can hold, receive and swap dollars, pounds and euros wherever you are.

Which currencies can I hold with Pryme?

Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros, side by side on one ledger. Each has its own details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area — and each has its own statement.

How do I send money to Nigeria with Pryme?

Swap at a rate you set rather than the rate of the day, then send to any Pryme username or to a Nigerian bank account. There is no fee to send to another Pryme account.

What does the assistant do?

Eva is the assistant inside the Pryme app. She opens accounts, moves money, saves toward your goals, pays what is due and follows up what is owed to you — and asks you before anything moves.

What is Pryme Rails?

Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

Nigeria's cashless policy timeline: 2012 to today

Dated timeline of the CBN cashless policy: the 2012 Lagos pilot, nationwide rollout in 2014, 2019 charges, 2022 withdrawal limits and the eNaira.

The short answer

The CBN began its cashless policy with a Lagos pilot in January 2012, charging fees on cash withdrawals above ₦500,000 for individuals and ₦3 million for companies. It spread to five more states and the FCT in July 2013 and nationwide in July 2014, was reinforced with withdrawal charges in 2019–2020, and was tightened with weekly limits during the 2022–2023 naira redesign.

The cashless policy does not ban cash. It sets limits above which cash withdrawals, and at times deposits, attract a processing charge, to push large transactions onto electronic channels. This page lists the main dates. For today's electronic transfer limits, see bank transfer limits in Nigeria.

Cashless policy timeline (as of October 2026)

1 January 2012Pilot begins in Lagos: processing charges on cash transactions above ₦500,000 a day for individuals and ₦3 million for corporates
1 July 2013Policy extended to Abia, Anambra, Kano, Ogun and Rivers states and the FCT
1 July 2014Nationwide rollout to the remaining states
2013–2018Agent banking guidelines and, from 2018, the Shared Agent Network Expansion Facility (SANEF) expand POS agents
September 2019CBN reintroduces processing fees: 3% on individual withdrawals above ₦500,000 and 5% on corporate withdrawals above ₦3 million, starting in six states
March 2020Fees extended nationwide
25 October 2021eNaira, the CBN's digital currency, launched
6 December 2022Weekly over-the-counter withdrawal limits of ₦100,000 (individuals) and ₦500,000 (corporates); ATM and POS cash capped at ₦20,000 a day
21 December 2022Limits revised to ₦500,000 and ₦5 million a week, effective 9 January 2023, with 3% and 5% charges above them
January–March 2023Cash shortage during the naira redesign; electronic payments jump
2024 onwardsFurther CBN circulars revise cash-related rules; check the current circular for limits in force

Why the CBN pushed for less cash

The CBN gave several reasons when it launched the policy in 2011: the cost of printing, moving and guarding cash; the risk of robbery and fraud in a cash economy; the large share of money circulating outside banks, which weakens monetary policy; and the goal of drawing more people into formal financial services. Lagos was chosen for the pilot because it had the largest volume of cash transactions and the densest banking network. The policy sat within the CBN's wider Payments System Vision 2020 strategy, which set targets for electronic payment infrastructure, and the CBN worked with banks and payment companies to deploy many more POS terminals in Lagos during the pilot so that shops could accept cards.

How the policy changed payments

  • Instant transfers: NIBSS Instant Payments (NIP), launched in 2011, became the main channel for person-to-person and business payments. See how NIP works.
  • POS terminals and agents: POS machines spread from shops to street agents, who now handle cash-in and cash-out for millions of people. Our guide to POS vs bank transfer compares them.
  • USSD and mobile money: USSD codes let people without smartphones send money; mobile money operators and, from 2022, payment service banks added more channels.
  • Cards: the domestic Verve scheme and later AfriGo (launched in January 2023) joined international card schemes.

2022–2023: the hardest test

The December 2022 limits came at the same time as the naira redesign. With new notes scarce, many people could not get cash at all in January and February 2023, and POS agents charged high premiums. Electronic payments surged as people had no alternative, and NIP volumes rose sharply. The crisis showed both how far the cashless push had come and how much of the economy, especially in rural areas and informal markets, still depends on cash. See the naira redesign timeline.

Withdrawals above the limit

The December 2022 circular allowed customers with a compelling reason to withdraw more than the weekly limit, at most once a month, with extra documentation such as a valid ID and the bank's approval, and required banks to report these withdrawals to the CBN. The rule reflected the fact that some legitimate businesses, such as farm buyers in rural markets, still need large amounts of cash.

What it means for a business today

  • Ask customers to pay by transfer or card where you can. Electronic receipts are easier to reconcile and to prove in a dispute.
  • Plan for cash fees. Large cash withdrawals above the limit in force cost a percentage of the excess, which adds up for businesses that pay suppliers in cash.
  • Reconcile daily. Our guide to the end-of-day cash-up covers counting cash, POS and transfer takings together.
  • Keep a cash float. Power cuts, network outages and the 2023 shortage all showed that a business needs some cash on hand and a plan for when electronic channels fail.

The eNaira

Launched on 25 October 2021, the eNaira is a digital form of the naira issued by the CBN and held in a wallet. The CBN linked it to the cashless policy, offering wallets through banks and an app and, from 2022, USSD access for people without bank accounts. Uptake stayed low compared with bank transfers, which already offered instant payments. The eNaira remains legal tender but has not become a major payment channel.

How we put this together

Dates and figures are from CBN circulars and press releases on cash-less policy, cash withdrawal limits and the eNaira. Where a rule was introduced in phases, we give the start date for the first phase. For later years we show the headline withdrawal thresholds only. We have not given NIP volumes here; NIBSS publishes them.

Questions people ask

When did the cashless policy start in Nigeria?

With a pilot in Lagos on 1 January 2012. It reached five more states and the FCT on 1 July 2013 and the rest of the country on 1 July 2014.

Does the cashless policy ban cash?

No. It sets thresholds above which cash withdrawals attract a fee, and at times weekly limits on cash withdrawals.

What were the 2023 cash withdrawal limits?

From 9 January 2023, ₦500,000 a week for individuals and ₦5 million for corporates over the counter, with 3% and 5% charges above those amounts.

Is the eNaira still in use?

It remains legal tender and available, but uptake is low compared with bank transfers.
