2018OjirehPrime Card

Questions

The things people ask us first.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives people and businesses in Nigeria one account that holds Naira alongside dollars, pounds and euros, and a set of agents that do the running of it — keeping the books, chasing what is owed, answering customers and paying bills. Nothing leaves an account without the owner’s approval.

Can I hold dollars, pounds and euros in a Pryme account?

Yes. A Pryme account holds Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros side by side on one ledger, each with its own account details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area. You can swap between them at a rate you set, and every currency has its own statement.

What is Spaces?

Spaces is available in Nigeria. It gives a shopper money to spend that can only be spent with a participating business. The business is paid into its Naira account whether or not the shopper repays, because Pryme carries the credit. For the business it is free to join, there is nothing monthly, and the customer’s identity is never shown — only a reference and what it is worth.

What do the agents on a Pryme Business Account do?

Five agents come with the account. The Chief of Staff runs the week and keeps what is stuck moving. Finance watches the money and keeps the books as you trade. Compliance keeps the filings on time and screens what moves. Sales chases what you are owed. Customer Support answers your customers and follows up. Each has a job description, a budget and a ceiling you set, and each one proposes rather than acts — nothing leaves the account without your signature.

How does Pryme Pay work?

Pryme Pay takes payments on your own site or on a checkout page you control. The buyer is given a one-time account number and transfers to it from any bank app or by USSD — no card, no OTP, nothing to type in. The money lands in the same account your agents are running, already matched to the order and already in your books.

What are Savings Boxes?

Savings Boxes are separate pots inside a Pryme account, held in Naira. Flexible Boxes can be withdrawn at any time, Fixed Boxes hold to a date, Investment Boxes hold for longer, and Interest-free Boxes earn nothing by design. A business can use them to ring-fence payroll and the tax it withholds, so that money cannot be spent by accident.

Who holds my money, and is it protected?

Pryme is a financial technology company, not a bank. Accounts and deposits are provided by Solid Allianze Microfinance Bank Limited, which is licensed by the Central Bank of Nigeria and is a member of the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation.

Can I build on Pryme?

Yes. Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives you one account that holds US dollars, pounds sterling and euros beside Naira, with an assistant that runs the account for you and asks before anything moves. Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, and further markets open as each licence lands.

Can I open a Pryme account from outside Nigeria?

Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, subject to verification and approval. Foreign-currency balances are held and converted inside that account, so you can hold, receive and swap dollars, pounds and euros wherever you are.

Which currencies can I hold with Pryme?

Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros, side by side on one ledger. Each has its own details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area — and each has its own statement.

How do I send money to Nigeria with Pryme?

Swap at a rate you set rather than the rate of the day, then send to any Pryme username or to a Nigerian bank account. There is no fee to send to another Pryme account.

What does the assistant do?

Eva is the assistant inside the Pryme app. She opens accounts, moves money, saves toward your goals, pays what is due and follows up what is owed to you — and asks you before anything moves.

What is Pryme Rails?

Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

Canada

Cash pickup or bank deposit in Nigeria: which suits your family?

Sending from Canada? How cash pickup and bank deposit compare on cost, speed, safety and currency, and which suits parents, students and urgent needs.

The short answer

Bank deposit suits most regular support: the money lands in the receiver's account, leaves a record and avoids carrying cash, but the account must be properly linked to a BVN and NIN. Cash pickup suits receivers without a full account or urgent needs, at the price of a trip to an agent with ID. Since 1 May 2026, both pay out in naira when you use a licensed money transfer operator.

The two options in brief

Bank depositCash pickup
What the receiver needsA Nigerian bank account in their name, linked to BVN and NIN for full limitsValid ID plus the tracking number (MTCN at Western Union, PIN at Ria)
SpeedWestern Union Canada: "minutes up to one banking day"Usually soon after the provider releases it; the receiver must then travel
CurrencyNaira from licensed operators since 1 May 2026Naira
RecordBank alert and statementAgent receipt
RiskWrong account number, account capsCarrying cash, MTCN or PIN scams

Cost

What you pay is the transfer fee plus the exchange margin, the gap between the provider's rate and the mid-market rate. Providers may price the two payout methods differently. Remitly Canada says the payment method you choose "may affect the speed of your transfer and the associated fees", and Western Union's estimator shows prices once you pick both payment and payout. Run the same amount through each option in the app and compare the naira the receiver will get, not just the fee. We do not quote figures here: they change daily, and the app shows the current price before you confirm.

A worked example

Example only, with made-up figures. You send CAD 300. Option A, bank deposit: fee CAD 2.99, receiver gets ₦300,000. Option B, cash pickup: fee CAD 4.99, receiver gets ₦297,000. You pay CAD 302.99 for A and CAD 304.99 for B, and A delivers ₦3,000 more. The fee gap is only CAD 2, but the rate gap is the larger cost, which is why the naira figure is the one to compare.

There can also be costs at the receiving end. For a bank deposit, the receiver may pay transfer fees later to move the money on. For cash pickup, the cost is time and transport to an agent.

Speed

For many senders the gap is small. Western Union Canada says bank transfer times "can be anywhere from minutes up to one banking day". Ria's Canadian page says Nigeria can receive funds "as fast as 15 minutes", depending on the funding method, with card transfers arriving "within minutes". With cash pickup the money may be ready fast, but the receiver still has to reach an agent during its opening hours. For an emergency at night or on a Sunday, a deposit to an account the receiver can use from their phone is often quicker in practice.

Safety

  • Bank deposit: no cash to carry, and a clear record. The main risk is a wrong digit in the account number, so check the account name before sending.
  • Cash pickup: the receiver leaves with cash. Western Union warns senders to share the MTCN only with the receiver or a Western Union representative, because anyone with it and matching ID could try to collect.
  • Fraud calls: tell older relatives that Western Union and banks do not ring to ask for an MTCN, PIN or OTP.

Currency

If you send through a licensed money transfer operator, the receiver gets naira either way. A March 2026 CBN circular, summarised by the law firm Udo Udoma & Belo-Osagie, requires these operators to pay customers only in naira from 1 May 2026, through designated settlement accounts. If your family needs US dollars in a domiciliary account, a bank wire is the usual route; see sending dollars or naira from Canada and our Nigeria library's guide to CBN rules on remittances.

Which suits whom

Parents on a monthly allowance
Bank deposit to a fully linked account. It is predictable, needs no travel and builds a record.
Relative with no BVN
Cash pickup with a passport, voter's card or national ID card. See receiving without a BVN.
Student paying fees
Bank deposit, or pay the school directly where possible.
Emergency in a town with agents nearby
Either; check agent hours before choosing cash.
Large one-off sum
Bank deposit, after checking the receiver's account has no tier cap that would block it.

What to check first

  1. Ask the receiver which they prefer and whether their account is Tier 3 (full KYC).
  2. For a deposit, get the account number and the name exactly as the bank holds it.
  3. For cash, confirm the receiver's ID is valid and the name on it matches what you will type.
  4. Compare the naira amount for both payouts in the app before you confirm.
  5. Send a small first transfer to a new receiver.

For receiver ID at Western Union, see what ID a Nigerian needs to collect cash.

Where Pryme fits

If you keep a Pryme account, family in Nigeria can be paid in naira from it with the rate and fee shown first. See how sending works.

Questions people ask

Is cash pickup or bank deposit cheaper from Canada?

It depends on the provider and the day. Compare the naira amount for both in the app before confirming.

Can my family receive dollars in cash from Canada?

Not through a licensed money transfer operator since 1 May 2026; payouts are in naira. Dollars into a domiciliary account usually need a bank wire.

Which is safer for elderly parents?

A bank deposit avoids carrying cash and leaves a record, if the account is fully linked.

How long does the receiver have to collect cash?

Western Union lists non-collection within 42 days as a reason it cancels a transfer.
