Questions

The things people ask us first.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives people and businesses in Nigeria one account that holds Naira alongside dollars, pounds and euros, and a set of agents that do the running of it — keeping the books, chasing what is owed, answering customers and paying bills. Nothing leaves an account without the owner’s approval.

Can I hold dollars, pounds and euros in a Pryme account?

Yes. A Pryme account holds Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros side by side on one ledger, each with its own account details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area. You can swap between them at a rate you set, and every currency has its own statement.

What is Spaces?

Spaces is available in Nigeria. It gives a shopper money to spend that can only be spent with a participating business. The business is paid into its Naira account whether or not the shopper repays, because Pryme carries the credit. For the business it is free to join, there is nothing monthly, and the customer’s identity is never shown — only a reference and what it is worth.

What do the agents on a Pryme Business Account do?

Five agents come with the account. The Chief of Staff runs the week and keeps what is stuck moving. Finance watches the money and keeps the books as you trade. Compliance keeps the filings on time and screens what moves. Sales chases what you are owed. Customer Support answers your customers and follows up. Each has a job description, a budget and a ceiling you set, and each one proposes rather than acts — nothing leaves the account without your signature.

How does Pryme Pay work?

Pryme Pay takes payments on your own site or on a checkout page you control. The buyer is given a one-time account number and transfers to it from any bank app or by USSD — no card, no OTP, nothing to type in. The money lands in the same account your agents are running, already matched to the order and already in your books.

What are Savings Boxes?

Savings Boxes are separate pots inside a Pryme account, held in Naira. Flexible Boxes can be withdrawn at any time, Fixed Boxes hold to a date, Investment Boxes hold for longer, and Interest-free Boxes earn nothing by design. A business can use them to ring-fence payroll and the tax it withholds, so that money cannot be spent by accident.

Who holds my money, and is it protected?

Pryme is a financial technology company, not a bank. Accounts and deposits are provided by Solid Allianze Microfinance Bank Limited, which is licensed by the Central Bank of Nigeria and is a member of the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation.

Can I build on Pryme?

Yes. Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives you one account that holds US dollars, pounds sterling and euros beside Naira, with an assistant that runs the account for you and asks before anything moves. Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, and further markets open as each licence lands.

Can I open a Pryme account from outside Nigeria?

Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, subject to verification and approval. Foreign-currency balances are held and converted inside that account, so you can hold, receive and swap dollars, pounds and euros wherever you are.

Which currencies can I hold with Pryme?

Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros, side by side on one ledger. Each has its own details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area — and each has its own statement.

How do I send money to Nigeria with Pryme?

Swap at a rate you set rather than the rate of the day, then send to any Pryme username or to a Nigerian bank account. There is no fee to send to another Pryme account.

What does the assistant do?

Eva is the assistant inside the Pryme app. She opens accounts, moves money, saves toward your goals, pays what is due and follows up what is owed to you — and asks you before anything moves.

What is Pryme Rails?

Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

Business

Cash book template for a Nigerian small business

A copyable two-column cash book for Nigerian small businesses, with daily recording rules, balancing against the drawer and bank, and record-keeping.

The short answer

A two-column cash book records every naira in and out, with one column for cash and one for bank, on the day it happens. Balance the cash column against the drawer every evening and the bank column against your statement at least weekly. Keep it for at least six years: the Nigeria Tax Administration Act 2025 requires records even from exempt businesses.

A cash book is the first set of books most Nigerian small businesses need, and often the only one for years. It records every naira that comes in or goes out, by cash or by bank, on the day it happens. Kept properly, it tells you each evening whether the money in the drawer and in the account matches what the business should have.

The two-column template

"Two-column" means one column for cash and one for bank (including transfers, POS settlements and card payments). Receipts go on the left, payments on the right, or in one running layout as below. Copy into a spreadsheet or a ruled book.

DateDetailsRef (receipt/invoice no.)Cash inBank inCash outBank outCash balanceBank balance
[dd/mm]Balance brought forward₦[ ]₦[ ]
[dd/mm][Sales / customer name][ ]₦[ ]₦[ ]₦[ ]₦[ ]
[dd/mm][Supplier / expense][ ]₦[ ]₦[ ]₦[ ]₦[ ]
[dd/mm]Cash paid into bank (contra)[slip no.]₦[ ]₦[ ]₦[ ]₦[ ]
[dd/mm]Balance carried forward₦[ ]₦[ ]

A contra entry is money moving between your own cash and your own bank, such as paying the day's takings into the account or withdrawing petty cash. It goes out of one column and into the other, so it changes neither total income nor total spending.

Daily recording

  1. Write each receipt and payment the same day, with a reference: your receipt number, the supplier's invoice number or the transfer reference.
  2. Never net figures. Record a ₦50,000 sale and a ₦12,000 fuel purchase as two lines, not one ₦38,000 line.
  3. Record owner withdrawals as "Drawings" so they are not mistaken for business expenses.
  4. Keep the paper behind every line in date order: receipts, invoices, POS slips, transfer screenshots.

Balancing: cash against the drawer, bank against the statement

Cash

At close, count the physical cash. It should equal the cash balance column. A small difference is usually change given wrongly; a regular one is a control problem. Write any difference as "Cash over" or "Cash short" with a note, instead of quietly correcting the figure.

Bank

Once a week at least, tick each bank line against the bank statement or app history. Anything on the statement but not in the book (charges, a customer transfer you missed) is added. Anything in the book but not yet on the statement (a transfer not yet settled) is noted until it appears. Do not treat a customer's screenshot as money in until it shows in your account; see how to spot a fake transfer receipt and payment reconciliation.

Worked example: one day in a provisions shop

Example only. Opening balances: cash ₦20,000, bank ₦310,000.

LineCashBank
Opening balance₦20,000₦310,000
Cash sales+₦85,000
Transfer and POS sales+₦140,000
Paid supplier by transfer-₦120,000
Bought bags with cash-₦6,000
Paid ₦80,000 cash into bank (contra)-₦80,000+₦80,000
Closing balance₦19,000₦410,000

Check: cash 20,000 + 85,000 - 6,000 - 80,000 = ₦19,000; bank 310,000 + 140,000 - 120,000 + 80,000 = ₦410,000. The drawer should hold ₦19,000 at close.

Mistakes that make a cash book useless

  • Writing it up weekly from memory. The figures will always balance on paper and never match reality.
  • Mixing personal and business money in the same account and the same book, so no one can say what the business earned.
  • Leaving out bank charges, SMS fees and POS charges because they are small. They add up and make the bank column drift from the statement.
  • Letting the person who handles the cash also be the only person who checks the book. Where you can, have someone else count the drawer or review the weekly match.

Cash rules and tax records

  • From 1 January 2026, CBN cash rules reported by Daily Trust abolished the cumulative cash deposit limit, and set weekly withdrawal limits of ₦500,000 for individuals and ₦5,000,000 for corporates, with charges of 3% and 5% on the excess (as at Dec 2025). Planning withdrawals from the cash book helps you stay under them.
  • The Nigeria Tax Administration Act 2025 s.31 requires every person, including exempt persons, to keep books and records with enough information to work out tax liability, in English, for at least six years after the year of assessment. A small business that is exempt from VAT or company income tax still keeps them.

Where Pryme fits

A Pryme Business Account gives a downloadable transaction history that fills the bank column for you, and the Finance agent can prepare a weekly match of your book against it for you to review. For shop takings, pair this with the daily sales record template, and see whether AI can do your bookkeeping.

Questions people ask

What is a two-column cash book?

A cash book with one column for cash and one for bank, recording every receipt and payment, so you can balance both against the drawer and the bank statement.

How do I record money I paid into the bank from the shop?

As a contra entry: out of the cash column and into the bank column on the same line. It is not income or an expense.

How long should I keep my cash book in Nigeria?

At least six years after the year of assessment, under s.31 of the Nigeria Tax Administration Act 2025, which applies even to exempt persons.

What if my cash does not balance at the end of the day?

Record the difference as cash over or short with a note. Do not change other figures to force a match, and investigate if it keeps happening.
