Questions

The things people ask us first.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives people and businesses in Nigeria one account that holds Naira alongside dollars, pounds and euros, and a set of agents that do the running of it — keeping the books, chasing what is owed, answering customers and paying bills. Nothing leaves an account without the owner’s approval.

Can I hold dollars, pounds and euros in a Pryme account?

Yes. A Pryme account holds Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros side by side on one ledger, each with its own account details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area. You can swap between them at a rate you set, and every currency has its own statement.

What is Spaces?

Spaces is available in Nigeria. It gives a shopper money to spend that can only be spent with a participating business. The business is paid into its Naira account whether or not the shopper repays, because Pryme carries the credit. For the business it is free to join, there is nothing monthly, and the customer’s identity is never shown — only a reference and what it is worth.

What do the agents on a Pryme Business Account do?

Five agents come with the account. The Chief of Staff runs the week and keeps what is stuck moving. Finance watches the money and keeps the books as you trade. Compliance keeps the filings on time and screens what moves. Sales chases what you are owed. Customer Support answers your customers and follows up. Each has a job description, a budget and a ceiling you set, and each one proposes rather than acts — nothing leaves the account without your signature.

How does Pryme Pay work?

Pryme Pay takes payments on your own site or on a checkout page you control. The buyer is given a one-time account number and transfers to it from any bank app or by USSD — no card, no OTP, nothing to type in. The money lands in the same account your agents are running, already matched to the order and already in your books.

What are Savings Boxes?

Savings Boxes are separate pots inside a Pryme account, held in Naira. Flexible Boxes can be withdrawn at any time, Fixed Boxes hold to a date, Investment Boxes hold for longer, and Interest-free Boxes earn nothing by design. A business can use them to ring-fence payroll and the tax it withholds, so that money cannot be spent by accident.

Who holds my money, and is it protected?

Pryme is a financial technology company, not a bank. Accounts and deposits are provided by Solid Allianze Microfinance Bank Limited, which is licensed by the Central Bank of Nigeria and is a member of the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation.

Can I build on Pryme?

Yes. Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives you one account that holds US dollars, pounds sterling and euros beside Naira, with an assistant that runs the account for you and asks before anything moves. Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, and further markets open as each licence lands.

Can I open a Pryme account from outside Nigeria?

Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, subject to verification and approval. Foreign-currency balances are held and converted inside that account, so you can hold, receive and swap dollars, pounds and euros wherever you are.

Which currencies can I hold with Pryme?

Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros, side by side on one ledger. Each has its own details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area — and each has its own statement.

How do I send money to Nigeria with Pryme?

Swap at a rate you set rather than the rate of the day, then send to any Pryme username or to a Nigerian bank account. There is no fee to send to another Pryme account.

What does the assistant do?

Eva is the assistant inside the Pryme app. She opens accounts, moves money, saves toward your goals, pays what is due and follows up what is owed to you — and asks you before anything moves.

What is Pryme Rails?

Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

United States

Car loan on an ITIN or new SSN: what lenders want

How newcomers with no US credit can finance a car: credit unions, co-signers, buy here pay here risks, and a worked example of total loan cost.

The short answer

Newcomers with an ITIN or a brand-new SSN can get car loans, but with no US credit history most lenders will offer higher rates or ask for a larger down payment or a co-signer. The CFPB advises getting quotes from a bank or credit union before you visit the dealer, and warns that buy here pay here dealers often charge higher rates and may report only missed payments.

In much of the US a car is how you get to work, so the question is often not whether to borrow but how to borrow without overpaying. Lenders care about three things: who you are, whether you can pay, and whether you have paid before. A newcomer can show the first two; the third is what costs money.

ITIN or SSN: what each means to a lender

An SSN is issued by the Social Security Administration, generally to noncitizens with work authorisation from DHS (SSA Publication 05-10096). An ITIN is issued by the IRS to people who need a federal taxpayer number but are not eligible for an SSN (Form W-7 instructions). Both identify you; neither comes with a credit history.

Many lenders' systems are built around the SSN, and some do not accept ITIN applications at all. Others, often credit unions and community lenders, do. If you are eligible for an SSN, getting it first opens more doors. If you are not, ask each lender directly whether it accepts ITINs before it runs a credit check.

Your options, from cheapest to dearest

  1. Pay cash for a cheaper car. No interest, and you can build credit with a secured card while you drive.
  2. Credit union or bank loan. The CFPB auto loan guide recommends getting quotes from banks and credit unions before you shop, so you can compare with the dealer's offer.
  3. Dealer financing. The CFPB notes the dealer may mark up the rate it receives from the lender. Having an outside quote gives you something to compare against.
  4. A co-signer. A co-signer with good US credit can lower the rate. The CFPB says the co-signer is responsible for the debt even if they never drive the car, and the loan affects both credit records.
  5. Buy here pay here. The CFPB says these dealers typically charge higher rates and often report only negative information to the bureaus. If you use one, ask in writing that your on-time payments are reported.

Worked example: what the rate does to the total

Example only; these are not quotes from any lender. A $15,000 loan over 60 months:

Example APRMonthly paymentTotal repaidTotal interest
7%$297.02$17,821.08$2,821.08
12%$333.67$20,020.00$5,020.00
18%$380.90$22,854.08$7,854.08

Going from 7% to 18% on the same car costs $5,033 more over five years. A larger down payment, a shorter term or a co-signer can each bring the cost down. The CFPB guide also notes that add-ons such as service contracts and GAP cover are negotiable and can be cancelled; leave them out of the loan unless you have decided you want them.

What lenders ask for

  • ID: passport, US licence or state ID.
  • SSN or ITIN.
  • Proof of income: recent pay stubs or an employer letter.
  • Proof of address: lease or utility bill.
  • Down payment funds, sometimes with a bank statement.
  • Proof of insurance before you drive away.

Lenders may also ask about your visa and how long you will be in the US, especially on longer terms.

Reading the offer

Dealers often lead with the monthly payment. Ask instead for four numbers in writing: the cash price of the car, the APR, the term in months and the total amount you will repay. A low monthly payment on a long term can cost far more overall, and on a used car a long term can leave you owing more than the car is worth for years. If you are on a visa that ends before the loan does, ask the lender what happens if you leave the US, and plan to sell or pay off the car before you go. Check for prepayment penalties so you can clear the loan early once your credit improves or you can refinance at a lower rate.

Build credit while you wait

Six to twelve months of on-time payments on a secured card or credit-builder loan can change the offers you get. The CFPB's checklist for people with no credit history describes secured cards (a deposit sets the limit) and credit-builder loans held in a locked savings account and repaid over months, both reported to the bureaus; ask whether the issuer reports before you sign up. Our guide to building US credit from scratch sets out the order.

Steps

  1. Decide your budget, including insurance, fuel and repairs.
  2. Get a written quote from a credit union or bank first.
  3. Check the car's title and history (see checking a used car).
  4. Compare the dealer's offer on APR, term and total cost, not monthly payment alone.
  5. Refuse add-ons you have not chosen.

Where Pryme fits

If a relative in Nigeria is helping with the down payment, a Pryme account holds NGN and USD and Swap shows the rate and fee before you approve the conversion, so you know exactly how many dollars arrive.

Questions people ask

Can I get a car loan with an ITIN?

Some lenders, often credit unions and community lenders, accept ITINs; others require an SSN. Ask before they run a credit check.

Can I get a car loan with no credit history in the US?

Yes, but expect a higher rate, a larger down payment or a co-signer. Get a quote from a bank or credit union first, as the CFPB advises.

Is buy here pay here a good idea for newcomers?

The CFPB says these dealers typically charge higher rates and often report only negative information. Use them as a last resort and ask for on-time payments to be reported.

Does a co-signer have to pay if I miss payments?

Yes. The CFPB says a co-signer is responsible for the debt even if they never drive the car.
