Questions

The things people ask us first.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives people and businesses in Nigeria one account that holds Naira alongside dollars, pounds and euros, and a set of agents that do the running of it — keeping the books, chasing what is owed, answering customers and paying bills. Nothing leaves an account without the owner’s approval.

Can I hold dollars, pounds and euros in a Pryme account?

Yes. A Pryme account holds Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros side by side on one ledger, each with its own account details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area. You can swap between them at a rate you set, and every currency has its own statement.

What is Spaces?

Spaces is available in Nigeria. It gives a shopper money to spend that can only be spent with a participating business. The business is paid into its Naira account whether or not the shopper repays, because Pryme carries the credit. For the business it is free to join, there is nothing monthly, and the customer’s identity is never shown — only a reference and what it is worth.

What do the agents on a Pryme Business Account do?

Five agents come with the account. The Chief of Staff runs the week and keeps what is stuck moving. Finance watches the money and keeps the books as you trade. Compliance keeps the filings on time and screens what moves. Sales chases what you are owed. Customer Support answers your customers and follows up. Each has a job description, a budget and a ceiling you set, and each one proposes rather than acts — nothing leaves the account without your signature.

How does Pryme Pay work?

Pryme Pay takes payments on your own site or on a checkout page you control. The buyer is given a one-time account number and transfers to it from any bank app or by USSD — no card, no OTP, nothing to type in. The money lands in the same account your agents are running, already matched to the order and already in your books.

What are Savings Boxes?

Savings Boxes are separate pots inside a Pryme account, held in Naira. Flexible Boxes can be withdrawn at any time, Fixed Boxes hold to a date, Investment Boxes hold for longer, and Interest-free Boxes earn nothing by design. A business can use them to ring-fence payroll and the tax it withholds, so that money cannot be spent by accident.

Who holds my money, and is it protected?

Pryme is a financial technology company, not a bank. Accounts and deposits are provided by Solid Allianze Microfinance Bank Limited, which is licensed by the Central Bank of Nigeria and is a member of the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation.

Can I build on Pryme?

Yes. Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives you one account that holds US dollars, pounds sterling and euros beside Naira, with an assistant that runs the account for you and asks before anything moves. Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, and further markets open as each licence lands.

Can I open a Pryme account from outside Nigeria?

Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, subject to verification and approval. Foreign-currency balances are held and converted inside that account, so you can hold, receive and swap dollars, pounds and euros wherever you are.

Which currencies can I hold with Pryme?

Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros, side by side on one ledger. Each has its own details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area — and each has its own statement.

How do I send money to Nigeria with Pryme?

Swap at a rate you set rather than the rate of the day, then send to any Pryme username or to a Nigerian bank account. There is no fee to send to another Pryme account.

What does the assistant do?

Eva is the assistant inside the Pryme app. She opens accounts, moves money, saves toward your goals, pays what is due and follows up what is owed to you — and asks you before anything moves.

What is Pryme Rails?

Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

South Africa

Car finance in South Africa as a foreign national

What SA banks and dealers ask a foreign national for vehicle finance: permit, payslips, credit record, valid licence and deposit. How to prepare.

The short answer

Foreign nationals can apply for vehicle finance in South Africa, usually through the dealer's finance office, which sends the application to banks. Expect to show your passport and a valid work permit, recent payslips and bank statements, proof of address and a valid driving licence. Each bank assesses you individually, and a short time left on your permit or no South African credit record can mean a decline, a larger deposit or a shorter term.

A car is often the second big purchase after rent, particularly in Johannesburg or Pretoria where public transport does not reach every workplace. Most car finance in South Africa is arranged at the dealership, but the lender is a bank or a bank's vehicle finance arm, which makes the decision.

What lenders and dealers usually ask for

We did not find a bank page in October 2026 that publishes vehicle finance rules specifically for foreign nationals; Nedbank's guide for non-South Africans, for example, does not cover vehicle finance. What it does say about credit applies here: "All credit applications are considered individually", with a credit risk assessment and a review of your sources of income. The documents commonly requested are:

  • Passport and a valid work permit or permanent residence permit.
  • Three to six months of payslips and matching bank statements (lenders differ).
  • An employment contract showing your start date and any end date.
  • Proof of residential address.
  • A valid driving licence. A Nigerian licence can be valid to drive on if it meets the conditions in the Department of Transport's note, but some lenders may prefer a South African one.

Why your permit and contract dates matter

Vehicle finance is a fixed-term loan, often over several years. If your permit or employment contract ends long before the last instalment, the lender carries more risk. For home loans, Nedbank applies different lending limits to non-citizens who live in South Africa and those who do not, which shows how much residence status shapes lending decisions. For cars, expect the lender to look at how long your permit has left and may set the loan term to match it.

Worked example: deposit and term

Example only, with an invented interest rate. A car costs R250,000. You pay a R50,000 deposit and finance R200,000.

Over 48 monthsOver 72 months
Amount financedR200,000R200,000
Rate (example)13% a year13% a year
Monthly instalment (approx.)R5,366R4,015
Total repaid (approx.)R257,568R289,080
Interest paid (approx.)R57,568R89,080

The longer term lowers the instalment but costs R31,512 more in interest in this example. If your permit has two years left, a 72-month term may not be offered at all. Your agreement will show the actual rate, fees and total cost; read it before you sign. Ask about a balloon payment (a lump sum at the end) separately, because it lowers the instalment but leaves a large amount due on the final date.

Steps before you visit a dealer

  1. Check that your permit and employment contract dates comfortably cover the term you want.
  2. Get three to six months of payslips and bank statements from the same account.
  3. Make sure your driving licence is valid, or convert it if you are a permanent resident; see converting a Nigerian licence.
  4. Check your South African credit report; see building a credit score as a foreign national.
  5. Save a deposit: it reduces the amount financed and the interest.
  6. Get insurance quotes before you sign; lenders commonly require cover on a financed car, so build the premium into your budget.

Reading the finance agreement

Before you sign, find these lines in the agreement and check them against what the salesperson told you:

Principal debt
The amount financed after your deposit, plus any fees added to it.
Interest rate
Whether it is fixed or linked to the prime rate, and how it is stated (yearly or monthly).
Instalment and term
The monthly amount and the number of months.
Balloon or residual
Any lump sum due at the end. Zero means none.
Total cost of credit
Everything you will pay over the term. Compare this between offers, not just the instalment.
Extras
Service plans, warranties or insurance products added to the instalment. Ask which are optional.

If you expect to leave South Africa before the end of the term, ask what settling the loan early would cost, and whether you may sell the car while it is still financed. Usually the lender must be paid off before ownership passes to a buyer.

Signs to slow down

  • A dealer who says approval is certain before any bank has assessed you.
  • Pressure to sign the same day without the full agreement in front of you.
  • Add-on products you did not ask for, included in the instalment.

Where Pryme fits

Pryme does not offer vehicle finance in South Africa. If you are saving the deposit from income in more than one currency, a Pryme multicurrency account holds NGN, USD, GBP and EUR, and Swap converts only when you choose, showing the rate and the fee before you approve; see Swap.

Questions people ask

Can a foreigner get car finance in South Africa?

Yes, banks accept applications from foreign nationals with valid permits and assess each one individually.

Can I get car finance on a work permit?

You can apply. Permit length, income and credit record affect whether you are offered finance and on what terms.

Do I need a South African driving licence for car finance?

A valid licence is needed. Some lenders may prefer a South African one; ask the lender.

How much deposit do foreigners need for car finance?

There is no published standard. A deposit lowers the amount financed and may help an application with a thin credit record.
