Questions

The things people ask us first.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives people and businesses in Nigeria one account that holds Naira alongside dollars, pounds and euros, and a set of agents that do the running of it — keeping the books, chasing what is owed, answering customers and paying bills. Nothing leaves an account without the owner’s approval.

Can I hold dollars, pounds and euros in a Pryme account?

Yes. A Pryme account holds Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros side by side on one ledger, each with its own account details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area. You can swap between them at a rate you set, and every currency has its own statement.

What is Spaces?

Spaces is available in Nigeria. It gives a shopper money to spend that can only be spent with a participating business. The business is paid into its Naira account whether or not the shopper repays, because Pryme carries the credit. For the business it is free to join, there is nothing monthly, and the customer’s identity is never shown — only a reference and what it is worth.

What do the agents on a Pryme Business Account do?

Five agents come with the account. The Chief of Staff runs the week and keeps what is stuck moving. Finance watches the money and keeps the books as you trade. Compliance keeps the filings on time and screens what moves. Sales chases what you are owed. Customer Support answers your customers and follows up. Each has a job description, a budget and a ceiling you set, and each one proposes rather than acts — nothing leaves the account without your signature.

How does Pryme Pay work?

Pryme Pay takes payments on your own site or on a checkout page you control. The buyer is given a one-time account number and transfers to it from any bank app or by USSD — no card, no OTP, nothing to type in. The money lands in the same account your agents are running, already matched to the order and already in your books.

What are Savings Boxes?

Savings Boxes are separate pots inside a Pryme account, held in Naira. Flexible Boxes can be withdrawn at any time, Fixed Boxes hold to a date, Investment Boxes hold for longer, and Interest-free Boxes earn nothing by design. A business can use them to ring-fence payroll and the tax it withholds, so that money cannot be spent by accident.

Who holds my money, and is it protected?

Pryme is a financial technology company, not a bank. Accounts and deposits are provided by Solid Allianze Microfinance Bank Limited, which is licensed by the Central Bank of Nigeria and is a member of the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation.

Can I build on Pryme?

Yes. Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives you one account that holds US dollars, pounds sterling and euros beside Naira, with an assistant that runs the account for you and asks before anything moves. Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, and further markets open as each licence lands.

Can I open a Pryme account from outside Nigeria?

Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, subject to verification and approval. Foreign-currency balances are held and converted inside that account, so you can hold, receive and swap dollars, pounds and euros wherever you are.

Which currencies can I hold with Pryme?

Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros, side by side on one ledger. Each has its own details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area — and each has its own statement.

How do I send money to Nigeria with Pryme?

Swap at a rate you set rather than the rate of the day, then send to any Pryme username or to a Nigerian bank account. There is no fee to send to another Pryme account.

What does the assistant do?

Eva is the assistant inside the Pryme app. She opens accounts, moves money, saves toward your goals, pays what is due and follows up what is owed to you — and asks you before anything moves.

What is Pryme Rails?

Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

Candle making business: wax, moulds and pricing

How to start a candle making business in Nigeria: wax types, wicks, moulds, scents, safety, three markets and a labelled pricing example.

The short answer

A candle making business needs wax, wicks, moulds or jars, fragrance oils, dyes and a double boiler, and sells into three markets: households during outages, churches and gift buyers. Scented candles carry the best margins; in our labelled example a 200g jar candle cost ₦3,500 in materials and sold for ₦6,500.

Three candle markets

Candles in Nigeria sell into three quite different markets, and each needs a different product and price.

MarketWhat they buyWhat wins
Households during power outagesPlain white household candles in packsLow price, long burn time, wide distribution
Churches and religious useWhite, coloured or large church candlesReliable supply, bulk pricing, consistent size
Gifts and home decorScented jar, block and decorative candlesScent, packaging, presentation

Outage demand is real: NERC's July 2025 order for Ikeja Electric sets minimum daily supply of 20 hours for Band A feeders, falling to 16, 12, 8 and 4 hours for Bands B to E, so many homes plan for evenings without grid power. But plain candles sell on price against established brands and alternatives such as rechargeable lamps. Most new small makers earn more in scented and decorative candles, where design and branding allow a higher price.

Materials: wax, wicks, moulds and scents

  • Wax: paraffin wax is widely used and cheaper; soy and other plant waxes are marketed for cleaner burning and suit container candles; beeswax is costly and suits premium lines. Blends are common.
  • Wicks: sized to the candle's width; a wick too small tunnels, too big smokes and burns fast. Test every size.
  • Moulds and containers: metal or silicone moulds for free-standing candles, heat-safe glass jars or tins for container candles.
  • Fragrance oils: made for candles, with the supplier's maximum load stated.
  • Colour: candle dyes, not food colouring or crayons.
  • Equipment: a double boiler or melting pot, thermometer, scale, pouring jug, wick holders and a heat gun for finishing.

How candles are made

  1. Weigh and melt the wax gently in a double boiler; never heat wax over an open flame unattended.
  2. Fix the wick to the centre of the jar or mould.
  3. Add fragrance and dye at the temperature your wax supplier recommends, and stir slowly.
  4. Pour at the recommended temperature and leave to set without moving it.
  5. Trim the wick, label and leave the candle to cure before testing or sale; curing time differs by wax.

Burn-test each new recipe: light a candle for a few hours, check that the melt pool reaches the edges, that the flame is steady and that it does not smoke. Keep notes of the wax, wick, fragrance load and result.

Start-up budget

A home workshop for scented candles can start small. These are example figures with assumed prices:

ItemAssumption (example)Amount
Double boiler, thermometer, scale, pouring jug₦45,000
Wax10kg₦50,000
Fragrance oilsfour scents₦40,000
Wicks, dyes, wick holders₦12,000
Jars and lids50 at ₦900₦45,000
Labels, boxes, heat gun₦30,000
Example start-up budget₦222,000

Pricing: a worked example

This example is a 200g scented candle in a glass jar, with assumed prices; ask suppliers for current quotes.

ItemAssumption (example)Amount
Soy or paraffin wax0.2kg at ₦5,000/kg₦1,000
Fragrance oil15ml₦900
Wick with sustainer tab₦150
Glass jar with lid₦900
Dye, label and gift box₦450
Gas or power share₦100
Cost per scented jar candle (200g)₦3,500

Materials come to ₦3,500 a candle. At an example retail price of ₦6,500, each candle leaves ₦3,000 before your time, rent, breakages and marketing. A boutique buying at an example wholesale price of ₦4,500 leaves you ₦1,000. The jar and fragrance are over half the cost, so reusing or buying jars by the carton makes a big difference. Plain household candles work on much smaller margins and need volume.

Our guide on how to price products in Nigeria covers margin and discounting.

Safety

  • Hot wax burns; work with heat-proof gloves and keep children away.
  • Keep a fire blanket or extinguisher in the workspace and never leave melting wax unattended.
  • Label every candle with safety warnings: never leave a burning candle unattended, keep away from curtains and children, burn on a heat-safe surface.
  • Store fragrance oils and wax away from heat and sunlight.

Selling and registration

Scented candles sell well online through Instagram and WhatsApp, at bazaars, in gift shops and as corporate gifts at the end of the year. Church supply is a bulk business won by visiting parish offices with samples and a price list. A CAC business name, which costs ₦20,000 under the May 2025 fee schedule, helps when you sell to shops and companies. If you also make room sprays, see air freshener production.

Where Pryme fits

Corporate gift orders often come with invoices and deposits; a Pryme Business Account with invoicing keeps each order and payment in one place.

Questions people ask

What materials do I need to start candle making?

Wax (paraffin, soy or a blend), wicks, moulds or heat-safe jars, candle fragrance oils, candle dyes, a double boiler, thermometer, scale and pouring jug.

Is candle making profitable in Nigeria?

Scented and decorative candles can carry good margins; our example jar candle cost ₦3,500 and sold at ₦6,500. Plain candles need large volume.

Which wax is best for candle making?

Paraffin is cheaper and widely used; soy suits container candles; beeswax is premium. Test each wax with your wick and fragrance.

Who buys candles in Nigeria?

Households during power outages, churches, gift buyers, hotels, spas and companies buying end-of-year gifts.
