Questions

The things people ask us first.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives people and businesses in Nigeria one account that holds Naira alongside dollars, pounds and euros, and a set of agents that do the running of it — keeping the books, chasing what is owed, answering customers and paying bills. Nothing leaves an account without the owner’s approval.

Can I hold dollars, pounds and euros in a Pryme account?

Yes. A Pryme account holds Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros side by side on one ledger, each with its own account details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area. You can swap between them at a rate you set, and every currency has its own statement.

What is Spaces?

Spaces is available in Nigeria. It gives a shopper money to spend that can only be spent with a participating business. The business is paid into its Naira account whether or not the shopper repays, because Pryme carries the credit. For the business it is free to join, there is nothing monthly, and the customer’s identity is never shown — only a reference and what it is worth.

What do the agents on a Pryme Business Account do?

Five agents come with the account. The Chief of Staff runs the week and keeps what is stuck moving. Finance watches the money and keeps the books as you trade. Compliance keeps the filings on time and screens what moves. Sales chases what you are owed. Customer Support answers your customers and follows up. Each has a job description, a budget and a ceiling you set, and each one proposes rather than acts — nothing leaves the account without your signature.

How does Pryme Pay work?

Pryme Pay takes payments on your own site or on a checkout page you control. The buyer is given a one-time account number and transfers to it from any bank app or by USSD — no card, no OTP, nothing to type in. The money lands in the same account your agents are running, already matched to the order and already in your books.

What are Savings Boxes?

Savings Boxes are separate pots inside a Pryme account, held in Naira. Flexible Boxes can be withdrawn at any time, Fixed Boxes hold to a date, Investment Boxes hold for longer, and Interest-free Boxes earn nothing by design. A business can use them to ring-fence payroll and the tax it withholds, so that money cannot be spent by accident.

Who holds my money, and is it protected?

Pryme is a financial technology company, not a bank. Accounts and deposits are provided by Solid Allianze Microfinance Bank Limited, which is licensed by the Central Bank of Nigeria and is a member of the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation.

Can I build on Pryme?

Yes. Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives you one account that holds US dollars, pounds sterling and euros beside Naira, with an assistant that runs the account for you and asks before anything moves. Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, and further markets open as each licence lands.

Can I open a Pryme account from outside Nigeria?

Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, subject to verification and approval. Foreign-currency balances are held and converted inside that account, so you can hold, receive and swap dollars, pounds and euros wherever you are.

Which currencies can I hold with Pryme?

Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros, side by side on one ledger. Each has its own details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area — and each has its own statement.

How do I send money to Nigeria with Pryme?

Swap at a rate you set rather than the rate of the day, then send to any Pryme username or to a Nigerian bank account. There is no fee to send to another Pryme account.

What does the assistant do?

Eva is the assistant inside the Pryme app. She opens accounts, moves money, saves toward your goals, pays what is due and follows up what is owed to you — and asks you before anything moves.

What is Pryme Rails?

Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

Canada

Is a Canadian divorce recognised in Nigeria?

How section 81 of Nigeria's Matrimonial Causes Act treats a divorce granted in Canada, and when a Nigerian court order may still be needed.

The short answer

Generally yes. Section 81 of Nigeria's Matrimonial Causes Act recognises a foreign divorce where the spouse who started the case was domiciled in that country when proceedings began, or where the law of the parties' domicile would recognise it, and in other cases recognised under private international law. Recognition can be refused for fraud or a denial of natural justice.

The law that decides it

Divorce for statutory (registry) marriages in Nigeria is governed by the Matrimonial Causes Act 1970. Its section 81 deals with divorces granted elsewhere. In summary, from the Act's text:

  1. Domicile of the petitioner. A foreign dissolution is recognised if, when proceedings began, the party who started them was domiciled in that foreign country (section 81(2)).
  2. Wives' domicile. A deserted wife, or a wife resident in that country for three years, is treated as domiciled there for this purpose (section 81(3)).
  3. Recognition by the domicile country. A divorce is also recognised if the law of the country where the parties were domiciled would recognise it (section 81(4)).
  4. Private international law. Any divorce that private international law would recognise is recognised (section 81(5)).
  5. Refusal. Recognition under subsections (2) or (4) is refused where private international law would refuse it for denial of natural justice or fraud (section 81(7)).

Section 81(9) defines "foreign country" as any country, or part of a country, outside Nigeria, so a divorce from a Canadian provincial court falls within it. Section 81(8) says these rules apply to divorces made before or after the Act.

What that means for a Canadian divorce

SituationLikely position under section 81Watch out for
Both spouses settled in Canada for years; one files in OntarioStrong case for recognition: petitioner domiciled in CanadaEvidence of domicile if ever challenged
Petitioner had only recently arrived in CanadaDomicile may be arguableTake Nigerian legal advice
Other spouse in Nigeria, not served or not toldRisk of refusal for denial of natural justiceKeep proof of service
Divorce obtained by false statementsRecognition can be refused for fraudSection 81(7)

Domicile is a legal concept, roughly the country you treat as your permanent home, and it is not the same as residence or citizenship. Whether you were domiciled in Canada when your case began is a question of fact a Nigerian court would decide if it were disputed. This is information, not legal advice.

Do you need a Nigerian divorce as well?

Section 81 recognises qualifying foreign divorces directly; it does not set out a registration step for them. A Nigerian court order may still matter in some situations:

  • If recognition is disputed, for example by a former spouse, a court would decide it.
  • If you were never divorced abroad, a Nigerian court can only dissolve a marriage for a person domiciled in Nigeria (section 2(2)), and only State High Courts hear these cases (section 2(1)).
  • Customary or Islamic marriages are dissolved in other ways; the US State Department's guide to Nigerian civil documents describes customary divorces evidenced by a High Court affidavit or customary court decree, and Islamic divorces by a Sharia court decree. Whether a Canadian divorce ends a customary marriage for all purposes in Nigeria is a question for a Nigerian lawyer.
  • Property and money orders. A Canadian order about land or payments in Nigeria raises enforcement questions separate from recognition of the divorce itself.

Using the divorce on Nigerian records

The practical use of a Canadian divorce in Nigeria is usually paperwork. The Nigeria High Commission in Ottawa charges CAD $150 for a change of passport data by divorce, including its administrative fee. A bank changing a BVN surname after divorce can rely on a divorce certificate under the CBN framework, as reported by Technext. Keep a certified copy from the Canadian court, and ask whoever is receiving it whether it must be authenticated; see authenticating an Ontario document for Nigeria. For the reverse question, see whether Ontario recognises a Nigerian divorce.

Evidence worth keeping

Section 81(6) lets a Nigerian court treat as proved facts that the foreign court found. That makes the Canadian court record useful long after the divorce. Keep the certified divorce order or certificate, the record showing how the other spouse was served, and anything showing where you lived when the case began, such as tax returns, leases or employment records. If recognition is ever argued in Nigeria, these are what a lawyer will ask for first.

What to check first

  1. What kind of marriage was it: registry, customary or Islamic?
  2. Where were you, and your former spouse, living when the Canadian case started?
  3. Was the other spouse properly served?
  4. What do you need the divorce for in Nigeria: remarriage, a passport, a bank, property?

For remarriage in Nigeria to someone new, also read how Canada treats a Nigerian customary marriage.

Where Pryme fits

After a divorce, many people separate finances across two countries. A Pryme Personal Account in your own name holds naira and foreign currencies apart. See the multicurrency account.

Questions people ask

Is a divorce from Canada valid in Nigeria?

Generally yes, under section 81 of the Matrimonial Causes Act, where the petitioner was domiciled in Canada when proceedings began or another recognition ground applies.

Do I need to register my Canadian divorce in Nigeria?

Section 81 does not set out a registration step; it recognises qualifying divorces directly. A court decides if recognition is disputed.

Can a Nigerian court refuse to recognise a foreign divorce?

Yes, where private international law would refuse it for fraud or denial of natural justice (section 81(7)).

Does a Canadian divorce end a Nigerian customary marriage?

That is not settled by section 81 alone. Take advice from a Nigerian lawyer.
