Questions

The things people ask us first.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives people and businesses in Nigeria one account that holds Naira alongside dollars, pounds and euros, and a set of agents that do the running of it — keeping the books, chasing what is owed, answering customers and paying bills. Nothing leaves an account without the owner’s approval.

Can I hold dollars, pounds and euros in a Pryme account?

Yes. A Pryme account holds Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros side by side on one ledger, each with its own account details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area. You can swap between them at a rate you set, and every currency has its own statement.

What is Spaces?

Spaces is available in Nigeria. It gives a shopper money to spend that can only be spent with a participating business. The business is paid into its Naira account whether or not the shopper repays, because Pryme carries the credit. For the business it is free to join, there is nothing monthly, and the customer’s identity is never shown — only a reference and what it is worth.

What do the agents on a Pryme Business Account do?

Five agents come with the account. The Chief of Staff runs the week and keeps what is stuck moving. Finance watches the money and keeps the books as you trade. Compliance keeps the filings on time and screens what moves. Sales chases what you are owed. Customer Support answers your customers and follows up. Each has a job description, a budget and a ceiling you set, and each one proposes rather than acts — nothing leaves the account without your signature.

How does Pryme Pay work?

Pryme Pay takes payments on your own site or on a checkout page you control. The buyer is given a one-time account number and transfers to it from any bank app or by USSD — no card, no OTP, nothing to type in. The money lands in the same account your agents are running, already matched to the order and already in your books.

What are Savings Boxes?

Savings Boxes are separate pots inside a Pryme account, held in Naira. Flexible Boxes can be withdrawn at any time, Fixed Boxes hold to a date, Investment Boxes hold for longer, and Interest-free Boxes earn nothing by design. A business can use them to ring-fence payroll and the tax it withholds, so that money cannot be spent by accident.

Who holds my money, and is it protected?

Pryme is a financial technology company, not a bank. Accounts and deposits are provided by Solid Allianze Microfinance Bank Limited, which is licensed by the Central Bank of Nigeria and is a member of the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation.

Can I build on Pryme?

Yes. Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives you one account that holds US dollars, pounds sterling and euros beside Naira, with an assistant that runs the account for you and asks before anything moves. Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, and further markets open as each licence lands.

Can I open a Pryme account from outside Nigeria?

Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, subject to verification and approval. Foreign-currency balances are held and converted inside that account, so you can hold, receive and swap dollars, pounds and euros wherever you are.

Which currencies can I hold with Pryme?

Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros, side by side on one ledger. Each has its own details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area — and each has its own statement.

How do I send money to Nigeria with Pryme?

Swap at a rate you set rather than the rate of the day, then send to any Pryme username or to a Nigerian bank account. There is no fee to send to another Pryme account.

What does the assistant do?

Eva is the assistant inside the Pryme app. She opens accounts, moves money, saves toward your goals, pays what is due and follows up what is owed to you — and asks you before anything moves.

What is Pryme Rails?

Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

SMS alert charges on a business account

What the CBN Guide says about SMS alert charges, what banks charge per message, how it adds up on a busy business account, and email alerts.

The short answer

Under the CBN Guide to Charges in force since 1 January 2020, SMS alerts are charged on a cost-recovery basis for customer-induced transactions, bank-induced alerts should be free, and email alerts carry no charge. Banks set their own per-message cost-recovery figure: GTBank moved from ₦4 to ₦6 a message from 1 May 2025, according to Techeconomy, while Zenith's FAQs list ₦4. On a busy business account those messages add up, so many businesses rely on email alerts instead.

What the CBN rule says

The CBN Guide to Charges effective 1 January 2020 treats transaction alerts as a required service. For SMS it allows cost recovery on alerts triggered by customer-induced transactions (paragraph 10.10.1 for banks, 6.10.1 for microfinance banks), and no charge for alerts triggered by the bank itself, such as charges it debits. Email alerts carry no charge. The Guide does not fix a naira figure for SMS; each institution recovers its own cost.

A CBN exposure draft of a new Guide was issued in April 2026. The summaries we read (Candide-Johnson, May 2026) did not cover SMS alerts, and the draft had not been confirmed as final in the sources checked in October 2026.

Which alerts can be charged

The line between customer-induced and bank-induced matters, because only the first can carry the SMS cost. Customer-induced alerts follow something you or your counterparty did: a transfer out, a card payment, a cash withdrawal, an incoming transfer from a customer. Bank-induced alerts follow something the bank did: debiting a fee, CAMF, VAT on charges, or an interest posting. Under the 2020 Guide the second group should not be billed. On a business account with many charges, that can be a noticeable number of messages each month, and it is worth checking that they are not on your SMS line.

What banks charge per message

InstitutionSMS alert chargeSource and date
GTBank₦6 per message from 1 May 2025 (was ₦4)Techeconomy, 30 Apr 2025
Zenith Bank₦4 per notification; email freeZenith FAQs
Sterling Bank₦6 per SMS on savings, ₦4 on currentSterling charges page, modified Sep 2026
Standard Chartered NigeriaNo chargePrice guide, June 2026

These figures can change and VAT may be added. Check your bank's current tariff, usually in its fees page or charges schedule. The same bank may charge differently on savings and current accounts, as Sterling's page shows, so look up the line for the account type you actually hold rather than the bank's headline figure.

How it adds up: a worked example

Example only. A Lagos retailer's account receives 400 customer transfers a month and makes 200 payments. Each transaction triggers an alert, so 600 customer-induced alerts a month.

Per-message chargeMonthlyYearly
₦4₦2,400₦28,800
₦6₦3,600₦43,200

Not a large sum for most businesses, but it is a cost for information you may already get by email or in the app. For accounts with thousands of small payments, such as a shop taking many transfers a day, the yearly figure becomes worth a conversation with the bank.

Opting for email alerts

Because email alerts are free under the Guide, a common approach is to make email the main alert channel and keep SMS where it adds security. Techeconomy's April 2025 report says GTBank customers could opt out of SMS alerts by filling a form and sending it to the bank's support email. Other banks have their own process; ask at your branch or through the relationship manager.

Before you switch off SMS

  • Some USSD services need the phone number registered for SMS alerts. FirstBank's FAQs, for example, say *894# is for accounts whose phone number is on its SMS alert platform.
  • SMS reaches you without data or Wi-Fi; email may not, which matters for spotting fraud quickly.
  • Make sure the alert email goes to a monitored address, not one person's inbox that no one checks on leave.
  • Keep at least one owner or director on SMS for large debits if the bank allows it.

Alerts as a fraud control

The main value of an alert is that someone sees an unexpected debit quickly. For a business, that means alerts must reach a person who knows what payments are expected. Decide who that is: often the owner for large debits and the accountant for everything. Ask the bank whether alerts can go to more than one email address, and whether it can send SMS only above an amount you set. If an alert shows a payment nobody authorised, call the bank at once and ask for the account to be restricted while you investigate; delays make recovery harder.

What to check first

  1. Count the SMS alert lines on last month's statement and multiply by the charge.
  2. Check whether any bank-induced alerts were charged; under the Guide they should not be.
  3. Ask the bank for its email alert option and any SMS opt-out form.
  4. Decide who should receive alerts, on which channel, and update the bank in writing.

For the full list of business account charges, see bank charges under the CBN Guide.

Where Pryme fits

On a Pryme Business Account, activity shows in the app as it happens, and sign-in and approvals use an authenticator app and a transaction PIN rather than SMS codes; see security. The Finance agent can list every charge on your accounts each month so small recurring costs are seen.

Questions people ask

How much is SMS alert charge in Nigeria?

Banks set their own cost-recovery figure. GTBank charges ₦6 a message from May 2025 (Techeconomy), Zenith lists ₦4, and some banks charge nothing. Check your bank's tariff.

Can I stop SMS alerts on my bank account?

Some banks allow it. Techeconomy reported GTBank customers could opt out with a form sent to support email. Email alerts are free under the CBN Guide.

Is it legal for banks to charge for SMS alerts?

Yes, on a cost-recovery basis for customer-induced transactions under the CBN's 2020 Guide to Charges. Bank-induced alerts should not be charged.

Why am I charged SMS fee even when I didn't transact?

Check whether the alerts were for bank-induced debits such as charges; under the Guide those should not be billed. Query them with your bank.
