Questions

The things people ask us first.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives people and businesses in Nigeria one account that holds Naira alongside dollars, pounds and euros, and a set of agents that do the running of it — keeping the books, chasing what is owed, answering customers and paying bills. Nothing leaves an account without the owner’s approval.

Can I hold dollars, pounds and euros in a Pryme account?

Yes. A Pryme account holds Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros side by side on one ledger, each with its own account details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area. You can swap between them at a rate you set, and every currency has its own statement.

What is Spaces?

Spaces is available in Nigeria. It gives a shopper money to spend that can only be spent with a participating business. The business is paid into its Naira account whether or not the shopper repays, because Pryme carries the credit. For the business it is free to join, there is nothing monthly, and the customer’s identity is never shown — only a reference and what it is worth.

What do the agents on a Pryme Business Account do?

Five agents come with the account. The Chief of Staff runs the week and keeps what is stuck moving. Finance watches the money and keeps the books as you trade. Compliance keeps the filings on time and screens what moves. Sales chases what you are owed. Customer Support answers your customers and follows up. Each has a job description, a budget and a ceiling you set, and each one proposes rather than acts — nothing leaves the account without your signature.

How does Pryme Pay work?

Pryme Pay takes payments on your own site or on a checkout page you control. The buyer is given a one-time account number and transfers to it from any bank app or by USSD — no card, no OTP, nothing to type in. The money lands in the same account your agents are running, already matched to the order and already in your books.

What are Savings Boxes?

Savings Boxes are separate pots inside a Pryme account, held in Naira. Flexible Boxes can be withdrawn at any time, Fixed Boxes hold to a date, Investment Boxes hold for longer, and Interest-free Boxes earn nothing by design. A business can use them to ring-fence payroll and the tax it withholds, so that money cannot be spent by accident.

Who holds my money, and is it protected?

Pryme is a financial technology company, not a bank. Accounts and deposits are provided by Solid Allianze Microfinance Bank Limited, which is licensed by the Central Bank of Nigeria and is a member of the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation.

Can I build on Pryme?

Yes. Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives you one account that holds US dollars, pounds sterling and euros beside Naira, with an assistant that runs the account for you and asks before anything moves. Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, and further markets open as each licence lands.

Can I open a Pryme account from outside Nigeria?

Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, subject to verification and approval. Foreign-currency balances are held and converted inside that account, so you can hold, receive and swap dollars, pounds and euros wherever you are.

Which currencies can I hold with Pryme?

Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros, side by side on one ledger. Each has its own details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area — and each has its own statement.

How do I send money to Nigeria with Pryme?

Swap at a rate you set rather than the rate of the day, then send to any Pryme username or to a Nigerian bank account. There is no fee to send to another Pryme account.

What does the assistant do?

Eva is the assistant inside the Pryme app. She opens accounts, moves money, saves toward your goals, pays what is due and follows up what is owed to you — and asks you before anything moves.

What is Pryme Rails?

Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

Building software for Nigerian banks: vendor vetting

Nigerian banks vet vendors on security, data handling and resilience. What the NDPA requires of a processor, and how to prepare from the UK.

The short answer

Expect a Nigerian bank to run a vendor due-diligence process before it signs: security questionnaires, evidence of controls, financial standing and a written data processing agreement. If your software touches customer data, the Nigeria Data Protection Act 2023 makes you a processor with duties under section 29, and any transfer of that data out of Nigeria needs a lawful basis under sections 41 to 43. Banks are themselves under CBN supervision, so they will map you against the rules they must meet.

Nigerian banks buy a lot of software: onboarding, fraud monitoring, lending workflows, reporting. UK-based founders and developers with Nigerian roots are well placed to sell to them, but the first big obstacle is rarely the demo. It is the vendor onboarding pack, which can run to dozens of questions before procurement will sign.

What vendor vetting usually covers

Each bank runs its own process, and the list below reflects the areas such reviews commonly cover rather than any single bank's form. Ask the bank for its questionnaire early.

AreaWhat you may be asked for
CompanyIncorporation documents, ownership, directors, audited or management accounts, references from other financial clients
SecurityPolicies, access control, encryption, penetration test results, any certifications you hold
Data protectionWhere data is stored, who can access it, sub-processors, breach procedure, a signed data processing agreement
ResilienceUptime commitments, backup and recovery, business continuity, exit and data return
CommercialInsurance (professional indemnity, cyber), liability caps, service levels

Banks are supervised by the Central Bank of Nigeria, and their vendor reviews reflect the rules they themselves must meet. Ask the bank which CBN requirements it will assess you against rather than guessing; the bank's risk team will usually say.

Your duties as a processor under the NDPA

If your software stores or handles personal data of the bank's customers, the bank is the controller and you are the processor. The Nigeria Data Protection Act 2023 applies even if you are not established in Nigeria: section 2(2)(c) extends it to a controller or processor that is not based in Nigeria but "is processing personal data of a data subject in Nigeria".

Section 29 sets out what a processor must do, and a bank's legal team will check your contract against it line by line:

  • Help the controller meet data subjects' rights requests (Part VI of the Act).
  • Put in place the security measures in Part VII.
  • Provide the information the controller needs to show compliance.
  • Tell the controller when you engage another processor (a sub-processor), and make sure that processor meets the same obligations.
  • Have a written agreement with the controller (section 29(2)).

On breaches, section 40 requires the controller to notify the Nigeria Data Protection Commission within 72 hours of becoming aware of a breach likely to risk data subjects' rights, and a processor must notify the controller, as the Udo Udoma & Belo-Osagie summary explains. A bank will want your contract to commit you to telling it quickly enough for it to meet that 72-hour clock.

Hosting outside Nigeria

If customer data will sit on servers in the UK or elsewhere, the transfer out of Nigeria needs a basis. Section 41 says a controller or processor shall not transfer personal data from Nigeria to another country unless the recipient is subject to a law, binding corporate rules, contractual clauses, a code of conduct or a certification mechanism giving adequate protection, or a section 43 exception applies (such as informed consent or performance of a contract). Section 42(6) says the absence of a Commission decision on a country does not mean its protection is adequate. The basis for the transfer must be recorded (section 41(2)).

Some banks may prefer data to stay in Nigeria or in cloud regions they have approved. Be ready to explain where each type of data lives, and offer a local hosting option if you can.

Audit returns and the bank's own obligations

Under the NDPC's General Application and Implementation Directive, as summarised by Templars in January 2026, banks fall in the highest category of data controllers, and compliance audit returns are due by 31 March each year through a licensed data protection compliance organisation. Your controls feed into the bank's return, which is one reason the questions are detailed. The Nigeria library's guide to data controllers of major importance explains the registration side.

Preparing from the UK: steps

  1. Write a short security and data pack: architecture, data flows, hosting regions, access controls, sub-processors.
  2. Prepare a data processing agreement that meets NDPA section 29 and UK GDPR Article 28 (see data processing agreements with Nigerian clients).
  3. Consider a recognised baseline such as Cyber Essentials, which the UK's NCSC recommends as fundamental safeguards.
  4. Arrange professional indemnity and cyber insurance at limits the bank is likely to ask about (cyber insurance for freelancers).
  5. Have a Nigerian entity or a local partner if the bank requires a local contracting party; ask before you incorporate.

Where Pryme fits

A Pryme Business Account gives a UK software company local NGN details for a Nigerian bank to pay into, alongside GBP, USD and EUR, and the Compliance agent prepares document checklists for review, with a person approving above a set ceiling. For the wider Nigeria data rules, see the NDPA for UK businesses.

Questions people ask

Does the NDPA apply to a UK software company?

Yes if it processes personal data of data subjects in Nigeria; section 2(2)(c) extends the Act to controllers and processors not based in Nigeria.

What must a processor agreement under the NDPA include?

Section 29 requires a written agreement and duties on rights requests, security, compliance information and sub-processors.

Can a Nigerian bank's data be hosted in the UK?

Only with a lawful transfer basis under sections 41 to 43 of the NDPA, recorded by the controller or processor. Ask the bank about its hosting preferences early.

How fast must a breach be reported?

The controller must notify the NDPC within 72 hours of becoming aware; the processor must tell the controller, so contracts set a shorter window.
