Questions

The things people ask us first.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives people and businesses in Nigeria one account that holds Naira alongside dollars, pounds and euros, and a set of agents that do the running of it — keeping the books, chasing what is owed, answering customers and paying bills. Nothing leaves an account without the owner’s approval.

Can I hold dollars, pounds and euros in a Pryme account?

Yes. A Pryme account holds Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros side by side on one ledger, each with its own account details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area. You can swap between them at a rate you set, and every currency has its own statement.

What is Spaces?

Spaces is available in Nigeria. It gives a shopper money to spend that can only be spent with a participating business. The business is paid into its Naira account whether or not the shopper repays, because Pryme carries the credit. For the business it is free to join, there is nothing monthly, and the customer’s identity is never shown — only a reference and what it is worth.

What do the agents on a Pryme Business Account do?

Five agents come with the account. The Chief of Staff runs the week and keeps what is stuck moving. Finance watches the money and keeps the books as you trade. Compliance keeps the filings on time and screens what moves. Sales chases what you are owed. Customer Support answers your customers and follows up. Each has a job description, a budget and a ceiling you set, and each one proposes rather than acts — nothing leaves the account without your signature.

How does Pryme Pay work?

Pryme Pay takes payments on your own site or on a checkout page you control. The buyer is given a one-time account number and transfers to it from any bank app or by USSD — no card, no OTP, nothing to type in. The money lands in the same account your agents are running, already matched to the order and already in your books.

What are Savings Boxes?

Savings Boxes are separate pots inside a Pryme account, held in Naira. Flexible Boxes can be withdrawn at any time, Fixed Boxes hold to a date, Investment Boxes hold for longer, and Interest-free Boxes earn nothing by design. A business can use them to ring-fence payroll and the tax it withholds, so that money cannot be spent by accident.

Who holds my money, and is it protected?

Pryme is a financial technology company, not a bank. Accounts and deposits are provided by Solid Allianze Microfinance Bank Limited, which is licensed by the Central Bank of Nigeria and is a member of the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation.

Can I build on Pryme?

Yes. Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives you one account that holds US dollars, pounds sterling and euros beside Naira, with an assistant that runs the account for you and asks before anything moves. Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, and further markets open as each licence lands.

Can I open a Pryme account from outside Nigeria?

Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, subject to verification and approval. Foreign-currency balances are held and converted inside that account, so you can hold, receive and swap dollars, pounds and euros wherever you are.

Which currencies can I hold with Pryme?

Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros, side by side on one ledger. Each has its own details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area — and each has its own statement.

How do I send money to Nigeria with Pryme?

Swap at a rate you set rather than the rate of the day, then send to any Pryme username or to a Nigerian bank account. There is no fee to send to another Pryme account.

What does the assistant do?

Eva is the assistant inside the Pryme app. She opens accounts, moves money, saves toward your goals, pays what is due and follows up what is owed to you — and asks you before anything moves.

What is Pryme Rails?

Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

Make money

Budget for a newly married couple in Nigeria

How newly married Nigerian couples can combine incomes, handle rent and family support, and set a savings target, with a worked example.

The short answer

A newly married couple can combine incomes by paying into a joint pot in proportion to what each earns and keeping the rest as personal money. In a worked example on ₦600,000 combined, shared costs are ₦520,000, essentials ₦310,000, and a three-month emergency fund of ₦930,000 takes about 19 months at ₦50,000 a month.

The first budget you make together

Newly married couples in Nigeria often start with more financial pressure than they expected: the wedding may have left debts, both families may expect support, and rent on a shared home is usually larger than either partner paid alone. The first joint budget is also the first test of how the two of you talk about money. Getting the structure right early saves arguments later, because the rules are agreed before any particular spending decision is on the table. This guide covers how to combine incomes, set the shared lines and agree a savings target, with a worked example.

Three ways to combine incomes

Everything joint
Both salaries go into one pot and all spending comes out of it. Simple and transparent; needs a high level of agreement on spending.
Proportional
Each partner pays into a joint pot in proportion to their income, and keeps the rest. Fair when incomes differ.
Split by bill
Each partner takes responsibility for certain bills. Easy to start, but it often becomes uneven over time.

There is no single right answer. Many couples use the proportional method because it is fair to the lower earner and keeps some personal freedom for both.

Worked example: ₦600,000 combined

A labelled example: one partner takes home ₦350,000 and the other ₦250,000, a combined ₦600,000. They rent a two-bedroom flat and are repaying a small loan taken for the wedding.

Line (example)MonthlyShareNote
Rent (₦1,500,000 a year, set aside monthly)₦125,00021%Two-bedroom flat, example
Food and groceries₦90,00015%
Transport (both)₦50,0008%
Data and airtime (both)₦15,0002%
Electricity, fuel, TV and bills₦30,0005%
Family support (₦25,000 each side)₦50,0008%
Wedding-related debt repayment₦30,0005%If any
Personal money (both)₦80,00013%See the split below
Shared leisure₦20,0003%
Emergency fund₦50,0008%
Goal savings (home, baby)₦60,00010%
Total₦600,000100%

The proportional split

The joint pot covers everything except personal money: ₦520,000. The first partner earns 58.3% of household income and pays ₦303,333; the second earns 41.7% and pays ₦216,667. That leaves ₦46,667 and ₦33,333 of personal money respectively, the ₦80,000 personal line in the table. Each spends their own money without needing to explain it.

Family obligations

Support for both families is a frequent source of tension. Agree a monthly amount for each side, write it down, and treat larger requests (a hospital bill, a sibling's fees) as a joint decision. In this example each side receives ₦25,000. Since 1 January 2026, the sender pays a ₦50 stamp duty on each electronic transfer of ₦10,000 or more, while transfers between your own accounts are exempt, as Kuda's help centre explains; one monthly transfer per family keeps that cost small.

Setting the savings target

Essentials (rent set-aside, food, transport, data and bills) come to ₦310,000 a month. Three months of essentials, the usual first target for an emergency fund, is ₦930,000. At ₦50,000 a month that takes about 19 months. Goal savings of ₦60,000 a month builds ₦720,000 in a year towards the next big item, often a first child or a move.

  • Clear high-cost wedding debt first. Paying it off is often the best return available.
  • Agree what counts as an emergency before one happens.
  • Plan for a baby before the pregnancy test, not after. See first-year baby costs.
  • Review together every three months; food prices in particular move fast, with food inflation at 19.59% year on year in September 2026, according to NBS figures reported by Voice of Nigeria.

If one income stops

Test the budget against the loss of one salary. If the ₦250,000 income stopped, the household would have ₦350,000 against ₦310,000 of essentials. That is tight but survivable if personal money, leisure, goal savings and the debt payment pause and family support is reduced for a while. If the ₦350,000 income stopped, ₦250,000 would not cover essentials, and the emergency fund would have to make up ₦60,000 a month. This is why the emergency fund comes before the goal savings, and why couples whose incomes are very unequal often build it larger.

What to talk about first

  1. Each partner's take-home pay, debts and regular commitments, in full.
  2. Which method of combining incomes you will use, and for how long before you review it.
  3. How much each family receives, and how larger requests are decided.
  4. The one goal you are both saving for this year.

Where Pryme fits

Each partner can hold a Pryme Personal Account, with shared goals kept in separate Boxes (Savings Boxes). Each Personal Assistant can prepare the payday contribution to the joint pot for its owner to approve (Personal Assistant). For more on family support, see black tax: supporting family without going broke.

Questions people ask

Should married couples have a joint account in Nigeria?

Many do, often alongside separate personal accounts. A joint pot for shared bills with personal money kept separately is a common, workable arrangement.

How do couples split bills when one earns more?

The proportional method: each pays into the joint pot in proportion to income. In this example a ₦350,000 earner pays ₦303,333 and a ₦250,000 earner pays ₦216,667 towards ₦520,000 of shared costs.

How much should a newly married couple save?

Aim for an emergency fund of three months' essentials first, then a goal such as a first child or a home. In this example that is ₦930,000 for the emergency fund.

How do we handle family requests as a couple?

Agree a fixed monthly amount for each side, and treat any larger request as a joint decision.
