Questions

The things people ask us first.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives people and businesses in Nigeria one account that holds Naira alongside dollars, pounds and euros, and a set of agents that do the running of it — keeping the books, chasing what is owed, answering customers and paying bills. Nothing leaves an account without the owner’s approval.

Can I hold dollars, pounds and euros in a Pryme account?

Yes. A Pryme account holds Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros side by side on one ledger, each with its own account details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area. You can swap between them at a rate you set, and every currency has its own statement.

What is Spaces?

Spaces is available in Nigeria. It gives a shopper money to spend that can only be spent with a participating business. The business is paid into its Naira account whether or not the shopper repays, because Pryme carries the credit. For the business it is free to join, there is nothing monthly, and the customer’s identity is never shown — only a reference and what it is worth.

What do the agents on a Pryme Business Account do?

Five agents come with the account. The Chief of Staff runs the week and keeps what is stuck moving. Finance watches the money and keeps the books as you trade. Compliance keeps the filings on time and screens what moves. Sales chases what you are owed. Customer Support answers your customers and follows up. Each has a job description, a budget and a ceiling you set, and each one proposes rather than acts — nothing leaves the account without your signature.

How does Pryme Pay work?

Pryme Pay takes payments on your own site or on a checkout page you control. The buyer is given a one-time account number and transfers to it from any bank app or by USSD — no card, no OTP, nothing to type in. The money lands in the same account your agents are running, already matched to the order and already in your books.

What are Savings Boxes?

Savings Boxes are separate pots inside a Pryme account, held in Naira. Flexible Boxes can be withdrawn at any time, Fixed Boxes hold to a date, Investment Boxes hold for longer, and Interest-free Boxes earn nothing by design. A business can use them to ring-fence payroll and the tax it withholds, so that money cannot be spent by accident.

Who holds my money, and is it protected?

Pryme is a financial technology company, not a bank. Accounts and deposits are provided by Solid Allianze Microfinance Bank Limited, which is licensed by the Central Bank of Nigeria and is a member of the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation.

Can I build on Pryme?

Yes. Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives you one account that holds US dollars, pounds sterling and euros beside Naira, with an assistant that runs the account for you and asks before anything moves. Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, and further markets open as each licence lands.

Can I open a Pryme account from outside Nigeria?

Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, subject to verification and approval. Foreign-currency balances are held and converted inside that account, so you can hold, receive and swap dollars, pounds and euros wherever you are.

Which currencies can I hold with Pryme?

Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros, side by side on one ledger. Each has its own details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area — and each has its own statement.

How do I send money to Nigeria with Pryme?

Swap at a rate you set rather than the rate of the day, then send to any Pryme username or to a Nigerian bank account. There is no fee to send to another Pryme account.

What does the assistant do?

Eva is the assistant inside the Pryme app. She opens accounts, moves money, saves toward your goals, pays what is due and follows up what is owed to you — and asks you before anything moves.

What is Pryme Rails?

Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

Saving for japa on a Nigerian salary: monthly worked example

How to set a japa savings target from UK proof-of-funds rules, split a ₦800,000 salary to reach it, and choose which currency to hold.

The short answer

Start from the funds your visa requires: for a UK Student visa, GOV.UK sets living costs at £1,171 a month for nine months outside London (£10,539) or £1,529 in London, held for 28 days, plus the £776 yearly health surcharge and unpaid fees. On ₦800,000 take-home, a plan saving ₦345,000 a month (43%) still takes years, so tuition usually needs other funding.

Start from the number the embassy will ask for

Most japa savings plans fail because they start with a vague figure. The better starting point is the specific amount of money your visa route requires you to show, in the currency it is set in, plus the costs you will pay before you travel. This guide uses the UK Student visa as the worked example, because its proof-of-funds rule is published plainly, then shows a monthly saving plan on a stated Nigerian salary.

The UK Student visa: what you must show

According to GOV.UK, a Student visa applicant must show money for living costs of £1,529 a month for up to nine months if studying in London, or £1,171 a month for up to nine months outside London. The money must have been held for at least 28 days in a row, and the end of that 28-day period must be within 31 days of the application date. This is on top of any unpaid course fees for the first year.

Item (UK Student visa)LondonOutside London
Living costs, 9 months£13,761£10,539
Immigration health surcharge, students, per year£776£776
Subtotal before course fees and visa fee£14,537£11,315

The immigration health surcharge for students is £776 a year, according to GOV.UK; you pay it for the length of your visa, so a longer course costs more. Add the unpaid balance of first-year tuition from your offer, the visa application fee shown on GOV.UK when you apply, flights and the first month's rent deposit. For other routes, see Canada study permit proof of funds and which currency to save in.

The monthly plan at ₦800,000 take-home

A labelled example for a single person taking home ₦800,000, studying outside London, and willing to cut back hard for a defined period.

Line (example)MonthlyShareNote
Rent (₦1,800,000 a year, set aside monthly)₦150,00019%Example
Food and groceries₦90,00011%
Transport₦50,0006%
Data, airtime and bills₦40,0005%
Family support₦40,0005%Reduced while saving
Personal care, clothing and leisure₦50,0006%Cut back while saving
Emergency fund in naira₦35,0004%Stays in Nigeria
Japa fund₦345,00043%About 43% of pay
Total₦800,000100%

Putting 43% of pay into the japa fund is only possible because the plan has an end date. Without one, a saving rate this high tends to collapse within a few months. Family support and leisure are reduced for that period, and the household knows why.

How long it takes

The time depends on what ₦345,000 buys in pounds each month, and that changes with the exchange rate. We do not quote a rate; check the rate in your app on the day you convert. The table shows the months needed to reach the £11,315 subtotal at different monthly amounts in pounds.

Saved per month (example)Months to £11,315
£20057
£30038
£40029
£50023

That is before tuition. For many people the realistic conclusion is that salary savings alone covers living costs and the surcharge, while tuition needs a scholarship, a family contribution or an education loan. Knowing that early is better than discovering it a month before the deadline.

Which currency to hold it in

  • Saving in naira and converting later keeps the money flexible but exposes you to the naira weakening before you convert.
  • Converting each month into the currency you will spend spreads the exchange-rate risk over many months, rather than all at once.
  • Splitting, for example converting the living-costs portion monthly and keeping a naira cushion for Nigerian costs, is a middle path.

Whichever you choose, the 28-day rule means the full amount must sit untouched in an acceptable account for the whole period. Do not move it in and out, and keep statements that show the balance each day. If the balance falls below the required amount at any point in the window, you may not meet the 28-day rule. Check your university's guidance on acceptable accounts and statements.

Steps

  1. Confirm the route and the exact figure on the official government page.
  2. Add tuition balance, surcharge, visa fee, flights and first-month costs.
  3. Set the monthly japa amount and an end date.
  4. Convert on a regular schedule, or hold in naira, but decide which before you start.
  5. Plan the 28-day holding window backwards from your intended application date.

Where Pryme fits

One Pryme account holds NGN, USD, GBP and EUR, so the japa fund can sit in pounds, and Swap shows the rate and fee before you approve a conversion (multicurrency, Swap). Through VerifyDoc.ai you can generate a verifiable statement that anyone can check is genuine and unaltered; check whether your visa route or university accepts it alongside its own requirements (verifiable statements).

Questions people ask

How much do I need to show for a UK student visa from Nigeria?

GOV.UK sets living costs at £1,529 a month for up to nine months in London and £1,171 a month outside London, held for 28 days in a row, plus any unpaid first-year fees.

How long does it take to save for japa on a Nigerian salary?

In this example, saving the equivalent of £300 a month takes about 38 months to reach £11,315 for UK living costs and one year's surcharge, before tuition.

Should I save for japa in naira or pounds?

Saving in the currency you will spend spreads exchange-rate risk over time; saving in naira keeps flexibility but leaves you exposed if the naira weakens before you convert.

What is the 28-day rule for UK visa funds?

The money must be held for at least 28 consecutive days, and the end of that period must fall within 31 days of your application, according to GOV.UK.
