Ten years, one trunk

Questions

The things people ask us first.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives people and businesses in Nigeria one account that holds Naira alongside dollars, pounds and euros, and a set of agents that do the running of it — keeping the books, chasing what is owed, answering customers and paying bills. Nothing leaves an account without the owner’s approval.

Can I hold dollars, pounds and euros in a Pryme account?

Yes. A Pryme account holds Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros side by side on one ledger, each with its own account details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area. You can swap between them at a rate you set, and every currency has its own statement.

What is Spaces?

Spaces is available in Nigeria. It gives a shopper money to spend that can only be spent with a participating business. The business is paid into its Naira account whether or not the shopper repays, because Pryme carries the credit. For the business it is free to join, there is nothing monthly, and the customer’s identity is never shown — only a reference and what it is worth.

What do the agents on a Pryme Business Account do?

Five agents come with the account. The Chief of Staff runs the week and keeps what is stuck moving. Finance watches the money and keeps the books as you trade. Compliance keeps the filings on time and screens what moves. Sales chases what you are owed. Customer Support answers your customers and follows up. Each has a job description, a budget and a ceiling you set, and each one proposes rather than acts — nothing leaves the account without your signature.

How does Pryme Pay work?

Pryme Pay takes payments on your own site or on a checkout page you control. The buyer is given a one-time account number and transfers to it from any bank app or by USSD — no card, no OTP, nothing to type in. The money lands in the same account your agents are running, already matched to the order and already in your books.

What are Savings Boxes?

Savings Boxes are separate pots inside a Pryme account, held in Naira. Flexible Boxes can be withdrawn at any time, Fixed Boxes hold to a date, Investment Boxes hold for longer, and Interest-free Boxes earn nothing by design. A business can use them to ring-fence payroll and the tax it withholds, so that money cannot be spent by accident.

Who holds my money, and is it protected?

Pryme is a financial technology company, not a bank. Accounts and deposits are provided by Solid Allianze Microfinance Bank Limited, which is licensed by the Central Bank of Nigeria and is a member of the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation.

Can I build on Pryme?

Yes. Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives you one account that holds US dollars, pounds sterling and euros beside Naira, with an assistant that runs the account for you and asks before anything moves. Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, and further markets open as each licence lands.

Can I open a Pryme account from outside Nigeria?

Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, subject to verification and approval. Foreign-currency balances are held and converted inside that account, so you can hold, receive and swap dollars, pounds and euros wherever you are.

Which currencies can I hold with Pryme?

Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros, side by side on one ledger. Each has its own details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area — and each has its own statement.

How do I send money to Nigeria with Pryme?

Swap at a rate you set rather than the rate of the day, then send to any Pryme username or to a Nigerian bank account. There is no fee to send to another Pryme account.

What does the assistant do?

Eva is the assistant inside the Pryme app. She opens accounts, moves money, saves toward your goals, pays what is due and follows up what is owed to you — and asks you before anything moves.

What is Pryme Rails?

Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

Budgeting your first salary abroad while supporting home

A simple split for a first salary abroad: costs first, a buffer next, home support as a fixed line, with a labelled example and the traps of month one.

The short answer

Budget from your net pay, not the offer letter: pay local fixed costs first, build a buffer of about one month's costs before raising support, then set home support as a fixed amount with a date rather than whatever is left. A workable starting split is roughly 55% living costs, 15% home support, 15% buffer and savings and 15% flexible, adjusted once you know your real bills.

Start with what actually lands

The first salary abroad is rarely the number in the offer letter. Tax, social contributions and pension deductions come off first, and the first payslip can be distorted. In the UK, for example, GOV.UK explains that a new starter may be put on an emergency tax code until HMRC has the right details, that HMRC can take up to 35 days from the job start to update a code, and that any overpaid tax is refunded through pay once the code is corrected. Other countries have their own versions. Treat month one as unusual, and plan from the net amount on your second or third payslip.

List what you earn monthly after deductions, and the date it arrives. Everything below is built from that figure.

The split, in order of priority

Order matters more than the exact percentages. Each pot is filled before the next.

  1. Fixed local costs: rent, council or property charges, utilities, phone, transport, groceries, insurance and debt repayments.
  2. Buffer: cash to cover one month of those fixed costs, kept separate. Until it exists, a single surprise bill forces borrowing.
  3. Home support: a fixed amount, sent on a fixed date, agreed with family in advance.
  4. Savings and goals: an emergency fund beyond the first month, a deposit, fees for your next visa.
  5. Flexible spending: clothes, eating out, visits, the things that make life abroad bearable.

A labelled example

PotShareExample monthly amount
Fixed local costs55%1,320
Home support15%360
Buffer, then savings15%360
Flexible15%360
Total net pay100%2,400

Example only, in local currency, for someone taking home 2,400 a month. In expensive cities rent alone can exceed the 55% line; then the home support and flexible lines shrink first, not the buffer. Once the one-month buffer is full, that 15% moves to longer-term savings.

Why home support should be a fixed line

The pressure to send money home is strongest in the first months, when family know you have started work but you have not yet felt a full cycle of bills. Sending whatever is left at month end means sending nothing in a bad month and too much in a good one, and it makes every request a negotiation. A fixed amount on a fixed date is easier on both sides. Our guides on setting a monthly allowance for parents and setting limits on family requests cover the conversation itself.

Plan the naira side in naira. School fees, a parent's upkeep and project costs are fixed in naira, but what they cost you moves with the exchange rate. Decide a conversion day each month and leave a margin for rate moves. Our two-currency budget guide sets out a full method.

Traps in the first three months

  • Committing to a large monthly amount before you have seen a full month of bills.
  • Signing up for credit to furnish a flat. Pay-later plans and overdrafts are easy to open and expensive to carry; see our guide to buy now pay later.
  • Assuming card spending builds credit. The CFPB notes that debit and prepaid cards and cash do not build a credit history; a secured card or a credit-builder loan does.
  • Keeping every pot in one account, so the buffer quietly funds everyday spending.
  • Forgetting annual costs: visa renewals, health surcharges, flights home, the December trip.

Adjusting the split after three months

After three full pay cycles you have real numbers rather than guesses. Compare what each pot was meant to hold with what it actually paid for. If fixed costs regularly run over 55%, look first at the large items, such as rent, transport and phone contracts, rather than trimming small pleasures. If the buffer filled and was never touched, move its share to longer-term goals such as a deposit or the fees for your next visa. If home support was topped up every month, the agreed amount was too low, or requests were not being filtered; decide which before raising it.

Revisit the split whenever something big changes: a pay rise, a new tax code, a partner starting work, a child, or a change in what family at home need. A pay rise is the best moment to raise savings, because you never get used to spending the extra.

Where to keep each pot

Keep the buffer in an account you cannot spend from by card. Check that it is protected: in the UK, the FSCS covers eligible deposits up to £120,000 per person per firm, and banks sharing a licence count as one firm. Home support can sit in a separate pot so you see at a glance what is committed.

Where Pryme fits

A Pryme account holds GBP, USD, EUR and naira side by side, so the home-support pot can sit apart from local spending. Swap shows the rate first and the fee on its own line before you approve, and Send pays family in Nigeria. The Personal Assistant can prepare the monthly transfer as a reminder; nothing moves until you approve it.

Questions people ask

How much of my salary should I send home?

There is no correct figure. A fixed amount you can keep paying every month, after rent, bills and a buffer, is better than a large amount you cannot sustain.

Why is my first payslip abroad so low?

Deductions start at once and some countries use a temporary tax code; in the UK, an emergency code can apply until HMRC has your details, with any overpayment refunded later.

Should I save before I send money home?

Build a buffer of about one month's fixed costs first. Without it, one unexpected bill can push you into expensive borrowing.

Does using my debit card build credit abroad?

No. The CFPB says debit cards, prepaid cards and cash do not build a credit history.
