Questions

The things people ask us first.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives people and businesses in Nigeria one account that holds Naira alongside dollars, pounds and euros, and a set of agents that do the running of it — keeping the books, chasing what is owed, answering customers and paying bills. Nothing leaves an account without the owner’s approval.

Can I hold dollars, pounds and euros in a Pryme account?

Yes. A Pryme account holds Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros side by side on one ledger, each with its own account details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area. You can swap between them at a rate you set, and every currency has its own statement.

What is Spaces?

Spaces is available in Nigeria. It gives a shopper money to spend that can only be spent with a participating business. The business is paid into its Naira account whether or not the shopper repays, because Pryme carries the credit. For the business it is free to join, there is nothing monthly, and the customer’s identity is never shown — only a reference and what it is worth.

What do the agents on a Pryme Business Account do?

Five agents come with the account. The Chief of Staff runs the week and keeps what is stuck moving. Finance watches the money and keeps the books as you trade. Compliance keeps the filings on time and screens what moves. Sales chases what you are owed. Customer Support answers your customers and follows up. Each has a job description, a budget and a ceiling you set, and each one proposes rather than acts — nothing leaves the account without your signature.

How does Pryme Pay work?

Pryme Pay takes payments on your own site or on a checkout page you control. The buyer is given a one-time account number and transfers to it from any bank app or by USSD — no card, no OTP, nothing to type in. The money lands in the same account your agents are running, already matched to the order and already in your books.

What are Savings Boxes?

Savings Boxes are separate pots inside a Pryme account, held in Naira. Flexible Boxes can be withdrawn at any time, Fixed Boxes hold to a date, Investment Boxes hold for longer, and Interest-free Boxes earn nothing by design. A business can use them to ring-fence payroll and the tax it withholds, so that money cannot be spent by accident.

Who holds my money, and is it protected?

Pryme is a financial technology company, not a bank. Accounts and deposits are provided by Solid Allianze Microfinance Bank Limited, which is licensed by the Central Bank of Nigeria and is a member of the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation.

Can I build on Pryme?

Yes. Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives you one account that holds US dollars, pounds sterling and euros beside Naira, with an assistant that runs the account for you and asks before anything moves. Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, and further markets open as each licence lands.

Can I open a Pryme account from outside Nigeria?

Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, subject to verification and approval. Foreign-currency balances are held and converted inside that account, so you can hold, receive and swap dollars, pounds and euros wherever you are.

Which currencies can I hold with Pryme?

Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros, side by side on one ledger. Each has its own details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area — and each has its own statement.

How do I send money to Nigeria with Pryme?

Swap at a rate you set rather than the rate of the day, then send to any Pryme username or to a Nigerian bank account. There is no fee to send to another Pryme account.

What does the assistant do?

Eva is the assistant inside the Pryme app. She opens accounts, moves money, saves toward your goals, pays what is due and follows up what is owed to you — and asks you before anything moves.

What is Pryme Rails?

Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

Boat transport business in Lagos: LASWA rules and costs

Running a passenger boat in Lagos: what LASWA and NIWA require, the daylight-only rule, safety duties, and a worked daily example of costs and income.

The short answer

A passenger boat business in Lagos operates under the Lagos State Waterways Authority (LASWA), which enforces safety rules with the federal National Inland Waterways Authority (NIWA). In their joint 2025 directive, commercial trips are barred after 7:00pm, every passenger must wear a certified life jacket, a manifest is required before each trip, and only certified, licensed captains may operate.

Who regulates boats on Lagos waters

Lagos has lagoons, creeks and a long stretch of inland waterway, and boats carry commuters between places such as Ikorodu, Lagos Island, Badagry and the beach communities. Two authorities matter. LASWA is the Lagos State agency for waterway transport. NIWA is the federal agency for inland waterways. In practice they patrol and issue directives together: in December 2025 they launched a joint safety campaign, and in January 2026 LASWA's General Manager, Damilola Emmanuel, said LASWA would patrol with NIWA and other agencies.

Because both bodies claim a role, operators have long complained about overlapping requirements. A 2013 report in Shipping Position recorded operators saying licensing was "highly demanding" and that one approval "took me some years"; LASWA's then managing director denied asking anyone to pay ₦5 million for a licence. That is an old dispute, but it is a reminder to get every requirement from LASWA in writing before you buy a boat.

The safety rules you will be held to

From the joint LASWA and NIWA directive reported by The Guardian (10 December 2025):

  • Certified life jackets provided and worn by every passenger.
  • An accurate passenger manifest before every trip.
  • Vessel and engine checks before each departure.
  • Passenger and weight limits strictly observed: no overloading.
  • No commercial trips after 7:00pm.
  • Only certified and licensed captains operate passenger boats.
  • Services suspended when weather is unsafe; passengers board only at authorised jetties.

In January 2026 LASWA restated that all boat operations, commercial or private, are restricted to daylight hours, and said offenders "will face legal consequences". The daylight rule matters for your maths: it caps how many trips a boat can make each day.

What you need before the first trip

  1. Register the business with the Corporate Affairs Commission.
  2. Ask LASWA for its current list of documents and fees for boat registration and an operator's licence. We could not confirm current fees from an official page.
  3. Confirm whether NIWA also requires registration for your route.
  4. Hire captains with valid certification, and keep copies of their papers.
  5. Buy enough certified life jackets for full capacity, plus spares.
  6. Agree jetty access with the jetty manager, and get every jetty charge in writing.
  7. Insure the boat and passengers. Ask insurers for marine hull and passenger liability quotes.

Choosing the boat, engine and route

The route decides almost everything else. A commuter route with a fixed morning and evening rush fills seats twice a day and is easy to plan; a leisure route to beach communities is busy at weekends and holidays and quiet midweek. Before buying, spend several days at the jetty you plan to use and count passengers at different hours. Ask the jetty manager how many operators already run the route and how loading turns are allocated.

Boat size should follow demand, not ambition. A larger boat needs more passengers per trip to break even, more fuel and a more experienced captain, and it takes longer to fill, which costs you trips in a day that ends at 7pm. Many new operators start with one modest boat and add a second when the first runs full at peak hours. Whatever you buy, check that the hull and engine can be serviced locally and that spare parts are available in Lagos, because a boat waiting weeks for a part earns nothing.

Get quotes for at least two engine options, ask each seller for the engine's fuel consumption at cruising speed, and test it on your actual route with a load. That figure, not a brochure claim, belongs in your costings.

Costs and income: a worked daily example

Example only; every figure is an assumption. A 20-seat boat runs 8 one-way trips between 7am and 7pm, carrying 14 passengers per trip on average (70% full) at a ₦2,000 fare. Petrol is taken at ₦1,210 a litre, one marketer's Lagos pump price reported in August 2026.

LinePer day (example)
Fares: 8 trips × 14 passengers × ₦2,000₦224,000
Fuel: 60 litres × ₦1,210−₦72,600
Captain and boat hand−₦25,000
Jetty charges and levies−₦10,000
Reserve for life jackets, ropes and repairs−₦15,000
Left before engine overhaul, insurance and finance₦101,400

Over 26 working days that is ₦2,636,400 a month, before outboard engine servicing, hull repairs, insurance and any loan repayments. Rainy-season days lost to bad weather, empty off-peak trips and fuel price changes can cut this sharply, so run the numbers again at 50% occupancy and 20 working days before you commit.

Where the risk sits

  • Fuel: outboard engines are thirsty, and petrol prices move.
  • Weather: you must stop when conditions are unsafe, with no income.
  • Safety: an accident can end the business and bring prosecution; the rules above are not optional.
  • Seasonality: commuter routes are steadier than leisure routes to the beaches.

Where Pryme fits

A boat operator with a Pryme Business Account can take fares by bank-transfer checkout (free) and set aside the engine reserve in a Naira Savings Box. Operators in a supported sector can apply to join Spaces. For road alternatives, see starting a transport or delivery business in Lagos.

Questions people ask

Can boats run at night in Lagos?

No. LASWA said in January 2026 that all boat operations, commercial or private, are restricted to daylight hours, and the December 2025 LASWA and NIWA directive barred commercial trips after 7:00pm.

How do I get a LASWA licence for a passenger boat?

Ask LASWA directly for its current list of documents and fees for boat registration and an operator's licence, and check whether NIWA also needs to register your boat for your route.

Are life jackets compulsory on Lagos boats?

Yes. The joint directive requires certified life jackets to be provided and worn by every passenger, and LASWA says passengers must wear them at all times.

How much can a passenger boat make in Lagos?

It depends on seats, occupancy, trips and fuel. In our example a 20-seat boat at 70% occupancy keeps about ₦101,400 a day before engine, insurance and finance costs.
