Questions

The things people ask us first.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives people and businesses in Nigeria one account that holds Naira alongside dollars, pounds and euros, and a set of agents that do the running of it — keeping the books, chasing what is owed, answering customers and paying bills. Nothing leaves an account without the owner’s approval.

Can I hold dollars, pounds and euros in a Pryme account?

Yes. A Pryme account holds Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros side by side on one ledger, each with its own account details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area. You can swap between them at a rate you set, and every currency has its own statement.

What is Spaces?

Spaces is available in Nigeria. It gives a shopper money to spend that can only be spent with a participating business. The business is paid into its Naira account whether or not the shopper repays, because Pryme carries the credit. For the business it is free to join, there is nothing monthly, and the customer’s identity is never shown — only a reference and what it is worth.

What do the agents on a Pryme Business Account do?

Five agents come with the account. The Chief of Staff runs the week and keeps what is stuck moving. Finance watches the money and keeps the books as you trade. Compliance keeps the filings on time and screens what moves. Sales chases what you are owed. Customer Support answers your customers and follows up. Each has a job description, a budget and a ceiling you set, and each one proposes rather than acts — nothing leaves the account without your signature.

How does Pryme Pay work?

Pryme Pay takes payments on your own site or on a checkout page you control. The buyer is given a one-time account number and transfers to it from any bank app or by USSD — no card, no OTP, nothing to type in. The money lands in the same account your agents are running, already matched to the order and already in your books.

What are Savings Boxes?

Savings Boxes are separate pots inside a Pryme account, held in Naira. Flexible Boxes can be withdrawn at any time, Fixed Boxes hold to a date, Investment Boxes hold for longer, and Interest-free Boxes earn nothing by design. A business can use them to ring-fence payroll and the tax it withholds, so that money cannot be spent by accident.

Who holds my money, and is it protected?

Pryme is a financial technology company, not a bank. Accounts and deposits are provided by Solid Allianze Microfinance Bank Limited, which is licensed by the Central Bank of Nigeria and is a member of the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation.

Can I build on Pryme?

Yes. Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives you one account that holds US dollars, pounds sterling and euros beside Naira, with an assistant that runs the account for you and asks before anything moves. Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, and further markets open as each licence lands.

Can I open a Pryme account from outside Nigeria?

Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, subject to verification and approval. Foreign-currency balances are held and converted inside that account, so you can hold, receive and swap dollars, pounds and euros wherever you are.

Which currencies can I hold with Pryme?

Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros, side by side on one ledger. Each has its own details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area — and each has its own statement.

How do I send money to Nigeria with Pryme?

Swap at a rate you set rather than the rate of the day, then send to any Pryme username or to a Nigerian bank account. There is no fee to send to another Pryme account.

What does the assistant do?

Eva is the assistant inside the Pryme app. She opens accounts, moves money, saves toward your goals, pays what is due and follows up what is owed to you — and asks you before anything moves.

What is Pryme Rails?

Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

Cities

Best areas to open a shop in Owerri: Douglas, Wetheral, Orji

Where shoppers gather in Owerri, from the Egbu Road markets to Douglas and Wetheral roads, Orji and Naze, with rent examples and a break-even check.

The short answer

In Owerri, footfall concentrates around the big markets on Egbu Road (Relief Market and the New Market), Eke Onunwa on Tetlow Road, the long commercial stretches of Douglas Road and Wetheral Road, and the growing junction areas of Orji and Naze on the city's edges. The right spot depends on who your buyers are: market shoppers want food and household goods, road-front customers want convenience, and suburbs want daily essentials close to home. Rent figures here are labelled examples, so confirm them on the street.

Choosing a shop location in Owerri is mostly about matching what you sell to where people already walk, park and spend. The city's trading map changed in 2017, when the state government demolished the old Ekeukwu-Owere market on Douglas Road and moved traders to temporary markets at Egbeada and Naze. Trade has since spread across several hubs rather than one.

The main trading areas

AreaWhat draws peopleSuits
Egbu Road (Relief Market, New Market)Two large markets close together; Relief is listed as open daily, the New Market busiest on Nkwo daysFoodstuff, provisions, clothing, phones and accessories, small electronics
Tetlow Road (Eke Onunwa)Fresh produce market in Owerri MunicipalFruit, vegetables, fish, spices, small eateries
Douglas RoadLong-standing commercial road and former site of the Ekeukwu-Owere marketRetail shops, pharmacies, fashion, phone shops
Wetheral RoadCommonly described as one of the city's busiest commercial roads, with banks and officesPharmacies, eateries, services, fashion
OrjiCommonly described as a busy junction area with a large residential catchmentSupermarkets, provisions, building materials, eateries
NazeOwerri North, where one of the 2017 relocation markets was set up; Nkwo Naze sells foodstuffProvisions, building materials, wholesale foodstuff
Bank Road and Ikenegbu areaCommonly described as an office and banking area with steady weekday trafficFood, printing, phone and computer services

Market descriptions come from a published guide to Imo markets and press reports. The character of a road can change quickly with construction or a new market, so spend a few days at a site at different hours before signing.

Who buys what, where

  • Market shoppers come for price and range: buyers at Relief or Eke Onunwa compare stalls, so a shop near the market must compete on price or offer something the stalls do not.
  • Road-front customers on Douglas or Wetheral roads value speed and parking. Pharmacies, phone accessories and quick food do well.
  • Suburban buyers in Orji, Naze, Uratta or Nekede want daily essentials without travelling to town. Provisions, bread, drinks and recharge points work here.
  • Students near the tertiary institutions (see student money in Owerri) spend on food, data and printing, with sharp dips during holidays.

Rent: labelled examples and a break-even check

We could not find published shop rent data for Owerri, so the figures below are examples to show the arithmetic, not market rates. Ask at least three landlords or agents on the street you want.

Owerri landlords often ask for one or two years' rent up front. Read upfront costs of renting in Owerri for the fee structure, which is similar for shops.

Running costs differ by location

Rent is only the first number. The same business can have quite different monthly costs depending on where it sits, and these often decide whether a busy location actually pays.

  • Power. A shop on a feeder with poor supply will run a generator for much of the day. Fuel can cost more than rent for a cold-room, salon or printing business. Ask neighbours how many hours of grid supply they get and check the feeder's band before signing.
  • Security. Market shops usually share security costs through the traders' association; road-front shops may need their own burglary-proofing and a night guard.
  • Levies and dues. Markets have union and association dues on top of state and council levies. Road-front shops deal more directly with council officials. Budget for both and ask for receipts.
  • Transport of stock. A shop near the Egbu Road markets can restock on foot; a suburban shop pays for a keke or van each trip.
  • Staff. Busy market locations may need two people at peak hours; quieter suburbs can be run by one.

Add these to the rent example above before deciding, and compare two or three locations on total monthly cost, not on rent alone.

What to check first

  1. Count passers-by for an hour in the morning, at midday and in the evening, on a weekday and a Saturday.
  2. Check parking, drainage and whether the road floods in the rainy season.
  3. Ask neighbouring traders about state and council levies; see shop levies in Owerri.
  4. Confirm who owns the building and get a written tenancy agreement and receipt.
  5. Check the power supply band and meter with EEDC before signing.
  6. Register the business name; see registering with CAC in Owerri.

Where Pryme fits

A Pryme Business Account lets you take payment by bank-transfer checkout free of charge, and comes with Finance and Customer Support agents that prepare work for you to approve. Spaces, Pryme's merchant ecosystem, currently operates in Lagos, Abuja and Port Harcourt, not Owerri. For more on drawing customers, see increasing footfall to your shop.
