Questions

The things people ask us first.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives people and businesses in Nigeria one account that holds Naira alongside dollars, pounds and euros, and a set of agents that do the running of it — keeping the books, chasing what is owed, answering customers and paying bills. Nothing leaves an account without the owner’s approval.

Can I hold dollars, pounds and euros in a Pryme account?

Yes. A Pryme account holds Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros side by side on one ledger, each with its own account details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area. You can swap between them at a rate you set, and every currency has its own statement.

What is Spaces?

Spaces is available in Nigeria. It gives a shopper money to spend that can only be spent with a participating business. The business is paid into its Naira account whether or not the shopper repays, because Pryme carries the credit. For the business it is free to join, there is nothing monthly, and the customer’s identity is never shown — only a reference and what it is worth.

What do the agents on a Pryme Business Account do?

Five agents come with the account. The Chief of Staff runs the week and keeps what is stuck moving. Finance watches the money and keeps the books as you trade. Compliance keeps the filings on time and screens what moves. Sales chases what you are owed. Customer Support answers your customers and follows up. Each has a job description, a budget and a ceiling you set, and each one proposes rather than acts — nothing leaves the account without your signature.

How does Pryme Pay work?

Pryme Pay takes payments on your own site or on a checkout page you control. The buyer is given a one-time account number and transfers to it from any bank app or by USSD — no card, no OTP, nothing to type in. The money lands in the same account your agents are running, already matched to the order and already in your books.

What are Savings Boxes?

Savings Boxes are separate pots inside a Pryme account, held in Naira. Flexible Boxes can be withdrawn at any time, Fixed Boxes hold to a date, Investment Boxes hold for longer, and Interest-free Boxes earn nothing by design. A business can use them to ring-fence payroll and the tax it withholds, so that money cannot be spent by accident.

Who holds my money, and is it protected?

Pryme is a financial technology company, not a bank. Accounts and deposits are provided by Solid Allianze Microfinance Bank Limited, which is licensed by the Central Bank of Nigeria and is a member of the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation.

Can I build on Pryme?

Yes. Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives you one account that holds US dollars, pounds sterling and euros beside Naira, with an assistant that runs the account for you and asks before anything moves. Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, and further markets open as each licence lands.

Can I open a Pryme account from outside Nigeria?

Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, subject to verification and approval. Foreign-currency balances are held and converted inside that account, so you can hold, receive and swap dollars, pounds and euros wherever you are.

Which currencies can I hold with Pryme?

Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros, side by side on one ledger. Each has its own details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area — and each has its own statement.

How do I send money to Nigeria with Pryme?

Swap at a rate you set rather than the rate of the day, then send to any Pryme username or to a Nigerian bank account. There is no fee to send to another Pryme account.

What does the assistant do?

Eva is the assistant inside the Pryme app. She opens accounts, moves money, saves toward your goals, pays what is due and follows up what is owed to you — and asks you before anything moves.

What is Pryme Rails?

Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

Balance transfer cards: using one to clear newcomer debt

How a US balance transfer works, the fee, the promotional period rules, where extra payments go, and a worked example of what it can save.

The short answer

A balance transfer moves debt from one card to another that charges a lower promotional rate, usually for a fee charged on the amount moved. Federal rules require a promotional rate to last at least six months and send any payment above the minimum to your highest-rate balance first, so the plan works only if you clear the moved balance before the promotion ends and stop adding new debt.

The first year in the US is expensive: deposits, furniture, a car, a flight home, money for family. Many newcomers end it with a card balance at a high interest rate. A balance transfer can cut the cost of clearing it. It can also make things worse if you treat it as more room to spend.

How a balance transfer works

  1. You apply for a card that offers a promotional rate on transferred balances, often 0% for a set number of months.
  2. If approved, you ask the new issuer to pay off some or all of your old card balance. The amount moves to the new card, plus a balance transfer fee.
  3. You repay the new card. During the promotional period, little or no interest is charged on the moved balance.
  4. When the period ends, any balance left starts charging the card's standard rate.

The fee and the promotional terms are in the card's pricing table. Read both before you apply, because the fee is added on the day the balance moves.

The rules that protect you

Regulation Z sets several limits that matter here:

  • Six months minimum. Under 12 CFR 1026.55, an issuer may raise a promotional rate at the end of the period only if the period was "six months or longer" and the length and the later rate were disclosed in writing beforehand.
  • Where your extra payments go. Under 12 CFR 1026.53, any amount you pay above the minimum goes first to the balance with the highest APR. If you also make new purchases at a higher rate, your extra payments go to those purchases first and the promotional balance waits.
  • Penalty rates. An issuer may apply a higher rate if it does not receive your minimum payment within 60 days of its due date, according to 12 CFR 1026.55. A late payment can therefore end the benefit you were paying for.
  • Ability to pay. The issuer must consider your income or assets and obligations before opening the account (12 CFR 1026.51), so a thin file or a low income may limit what you are offered.

Worked example

Example only, with illustrative figures. You owe $3,000 on a card at 24% APR. A new card offers 0% on transfers for 15 months with a 3% fee.

Stay on old cardTransfer
Fee$0$90 (3% of $3,000)
Monthly payment$206$206
Interest over 15 monthsabout $565$0
Owed after 15 monthsabout $475$0

On the transfer, $3,090 ÷ 15 months = $206 a month clears it exactly. Paying the same $206 on the old card at 24% leaves about $475 still owed after 15 months, having paid about $565 in interest. The transfer works here because the monthly payment was set to clear the full balance inside the promotion.

When it does not work

  • You cannot afford a payment that clears the balance before the period ends.
  • You keep spending on the new card, so extra payments go to purchases first.
  • You keep spending on the old card, which is now empty and tempting.
  • Your file is too new to be approved, or the limit offered is too small to move much of the balance. Several applications in a short time can lower your score.
  • The debt is from a cash advance or a transfer to Nigeria charged as one; check what the new card allows.

On that last point, the CFPB notes that cash advances commonly carry a higher APR and start charging interest immediately, with no grace period. If you have been sending money home on a credit card, see credit card cash advance fees on transfers to Nigeria.

Alternatives to compare

A balance transfer is one option, not the only one. A fixed-rate personal loan from a credit union turns card debt into a set number of equal payments, which some people find easier to stick to, though approval also depends on your file. Calling your current issuer to ask for a lower rate or a hardship plan costs nothing; 12 CFR 1026.55 allows issuers to set workout or hardship arrangements with terms disclosed in writing. Whichever route you choose, stop adding new debt while you repay.

Steps

  1. List each debt with its balance and APR.
  2. Divide the balance plus the fee by the number of promotional months. If you cannot pay that each month, consider a smaller transfer or another plan.
  3. Apply for one card only; check your reports first.
  4. Set up autopay for at least the minimum so a missed payment cannot trigger a penalty rate; see autopay and your credit.
  5. Diary the date the promotion ends.
  6. Avoid payday and title loans as a stopgap; see why newcomers should avoid them.

Where Pryme fits

Pryme does not offer US credit cards or balance transfers. The Pryme Personal Assistant can set reminders for repayment dates and prepare transfers that you approve.

Questions people ask

Is a 0% balance transfer really free?

Usually not. Most charge a balance transfer fee on the amount moved, shown in the pricing table. The interest saving has to be larger than the fee.

How long does a balance transfer promotion last?

It varies by card, but under 12 CFR 1026.55 an issuer can only raise a promotional rate at the end of a period of at least six months.

Can I use a balance transfer card for new purchases?

You can, but extra payments go first to the highest-rate balance under 12 CFR 1026.53, so new purchases at a higher rate get paid before the promotional balance.

Can I get a balance transfer card with a new US credit file?

Possibly, but the issuer must consider your ability to pay and your file, and a new file may get a small limit. Check your reports and apply for one card at a time.
