Questions

The things people ask us first.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives people and businesses in Nigeria one account that holds Naira alongside dollars, pounds and euros, and a set of agents that do the running of it — keeping the books, chasing what is owed, answering customers and paying bills. Nothing leaves an account without the owner’s approval.

Can I hold dollars, pounds and euros in a Pryme account?

Yes. A Pryme account holds Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros side by side on one ledger, each with its own account details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area. You can swap between them at a rate you set, and every currency has its own statement.

What is Spaces?

Spaces is available in Nigeria. It gives a shopper money to spend that can only be spent with a participating business. The business is paid into its Naira account whether or not the shopper repays, because Pryme carries the credit. For the business it is free to join, there is nothing monthly, and the customer’s identity is never shown — only a reference and what it is worth.

What do the agents on a Pryme Business Account do?

Five agents come with the account. The Chief of Staff runs the week and keeps what is stuck moving. Finance watches the money and keeps the books as you trade. Compliance keeps the filings on time and screens what moves. Sales chases what you are owed. Customer Support answers your customers and follows up. Each has a job description, a budget and a ceiling you set, and each one proposes rather than acts — nothing leaves the account without your signature.

How does Pryme Pay work?

Pryme Pay takes payments on your own site or on a checkout page you control. The buyer is given a one-time account number and transfers to it from any bank app or by USSD — no card, no OTP, nothing to type in. The money lands in the same account your agents are running, already matched to the order and already in your books.

What are Savings Boxes?

Savings Boxes are separate pots inside a Pryme account, held in Naira. Flexible Boxes can be withdrawn at any time, Fixed Boxes hold to a date, Investment Boxes hold for longer, and Interest-free Boxes earn nothing by design. A business can use them to ring-fence payroll and the tax it withholds, so that money cannot be spent by accident.

Who holds my money, and is it protected?

Pryme is a financial technology company, not a bank. Accounts and deposits are provided by Solid Allianze Microfinance Bank Limited, which is licensed by the Central Bank of Nigeria and is a member of the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation.

Can I build on Pryme?

Yes. Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives you one account that holds US dollars, pounds sterling and euros beside Naira, with an assistant that runs the account for you and asks before anything moves. Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, and further markets open as each licence lands.

Can I open a Pryme account from outside Nigeria?

Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, subject to verification and approval. Foreign-currency balances are held and converted inside that account, so you can hold, receive and swap dollars, pounds and euros wherever you are.

Which currencies can I hold with Pryme?

Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros, side by side on one ledger. Each has its own details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area — and each has its own statement.

How do I send money to Nigeria with Pryme?

Swap at a rate you set rather than the rate of the day, then send to any Pryme username or to a Nigerian bank account. There is no fee to send to another Pryme account.

What does the assistant do?

Eva is the assistant inside the Pryme app. She opens accounts, moves money, saves toward your goals, pays what is due and follows up what is owed to you — and asks you before anything moves.

What is Pryme Rails?

Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

Make money

Bread bakery start-up cost in Nigeria

Oven, mixer, flour at ₦55,000 to ₦62,000 a bag (PBAN, Dec 2025), distribution, and a labelled example of the margin on each loaf.

The short answer

A small commercial bread bakery in Nigeria needs roughly ₦15.5 million in our labelled example, covering an oven, mixer, divider, generator, premises, a delivery tricycle and working capital. Flour is the biggest running cost: the Premium Breadmakers Association of Nigeria put a 50kg bag at ₦55,000 to ₦62,000 in December 2025, and in our example each loaf costs about ₦1,050 to make and earns about ₦250 when sold to distributors.

What drives the cost of a bread bakery

Bread is a volume business with thin margins. A bakery makes money by running its oven full every day and selling everything before it goes stale. Four things decide whether that works: what you pay for flour, what you pay for energy, how much bread your distributors can sell, and how much you lose to returns and spoilage.

Flour prices move a lot. In a statement reported on 17 December 2025, the Premium Breadmakers Association of Nigeria (PBAN) said a 50kg bag cost between ₦55,000 and ₦62,000 depending on brand and location, and rejected a viral claim that prices had fallen to ₦35,000 to ₦40,000. It also said diesel costs had reached an all-time high. Check today's flour price with two or three distributors before you build your budget, because a ₦5,000 change per bag changes your loaf cost straight away.

Equipment and set-up budget (example)

The table is an example for a small bakery baking a few bags a day, using new or good refurbished equipment. Prices vary widely by make and condition; get written quotes.

Item (example)Cost (₦)
Gas or diesel deck/rotary oven3,500,000
Spiral mixer1,800,000
Dough divider and moulder1,200,000
Bread tins, trays and racks400,000
Bread slicer600,000
Generator1,500,000
Premises fit-out: tiling, ventilation, sinks, store1,500,000
Used delivery tricycle3,000,000
Working capital: flour, ingredients, packaging, staff2,000,000
Total15,500,000

Registration costs sit on top. The CAC fee schedule dated 29 May 2025 lists ₦20,000 for business name registration with a certified copy. Bread sold in branded wrappers also needs NAFDAC registration; see our guide to NAFDAC registration for small food businesses and confirm current charges with NAFDAC directly.

Energy: gas, diesel or grid

Most small bakeries bake with gas or diesel and use a generator for the mixer and lights. For reference, the NBS cooking gas price watch reported an average 12.5kg refill of ₦22,382.20 in April 2026; industrial gas is bought differently, but the trend is the same. If you are on a Band A feeder, NERC's July 2025 orders set ₦209.50 per kWh for Band A customers, so a mixer drawing 3kW for four hours (12kWh) would cost about ₦2,514 a day on the grid in that example.

Cost and margin per loaf (example)

This example assumes one 50kg bag of flour makes 110 medium loaves. Your yield depends on your recipe and loaf weight, so weigh your own dough.

Cost per bag of flour₦
Flour (within PBAN's Dec 2025 range)58,000
Sugar12,000
Yeast5,000

Total115,500

₦115,500 ÷ 110 = ₦1,050
Price to distributor
₦1,300 (example)
Margin per loaf
₦250
Margin per bag
110 × ₦250 = ₦27,500
Four bags a day, 26 days
104 bags × ₦27,500 = ₦2,860,000 a month before rent, maintenance and returns

Returns are where small bakeries lose money quietly. If 5% of loaves come back unsold, you lose about five or six loaves' worth of cost per bag, which in this example is roughly ₦5,775 of the ₦27,500 margin.

Distribution: how bread actually gets sold

  • Distributors and hawkers: most bakeries sell the bulk of output to distributors at a wholesale price, often on daily settlement.
  • Shops and supermarkets: steadier orders, but they may pay weekly and expect fresh replacement of stale stock.
  • Your own outlet: higher price per loaf, but you carry staff and rent.
  • Schools, hotels and canteens: contract supply with fixed quantities.

Agree in writing who carries the cost of unsold bread. Daily cash settlement protects your working capital more than weekly credit.

Mistakes that sink new bakeries

  • Pricing from last month's flour: recalculate loaf cost every time you buy flour, not once a year.
  • Too many loaf sizes: each size needs its own tins, price and records. Start with two.
  • Selling on long credit: a distributor who owes you a week of bread is holding your flour money.
  • Skipping maintenance: an oven or mixer breakdown can stop sales for days. Keep spares for belts and burners.
  • No record of returns: count stale loaves by distributor so you can see who over-orders.

What to check first

  1. Today's flour price from at least two distributors.
  2. Whether your location can take an oven safely: ventilation, fire exits, neighbours.
  3. Your energy plan for a full day of baking, priced per bag.
  4. Two or three distributors willing to take a daily quota.
  5. NAFDAC requirements for your product and packaging.

Where Pryme fits

Distributors who settle by transfer can pay into a Pryme Business Account, and bank-transfer checkout is free for shops that buy online. The Finance agent can prepare a daily reconciliation of who has paid, for you to approve (Finance). A bakery with a shopfront in a supported sector may be able to join Spaces. For collecting from distributors, see how to get paid in Nigeria.

Questions people ask

How much does it cost to start a bakery in Nigeria?

About ₦15.5 million in our labelled example for a small commercial bakery with oven, mixer, divider, generator, premises, delivery tricycle and working capital. A smaller home-based set-up costs far less.

What is the price of a bag of flour now?

PBAN said ₦55,000 to ₦62,000 per 50kg bag in December 2025, depending on brand and location. Prices change often, so ask distributors for today's price.

How many loaves can one bag of flour make?

It depends on loaf size and recipe. Our example uses 110 medium loaves per 50kg bag; weigh your own dough to find your figure.

What is the profit on a loaf of bread?

In our example about ₦250 per loaf sold to distributors at ₦1,300, before rent, maintenance and returns.
