Ten years, one trunk

The business has changed shape four times and never changed what it was rooted in. Each version was built out of what the last one could not do.

2016E-commerce

2018OjirehPrime Card

2020Microfinance bank

2023Multicurrency

More than one currency on one balance, and the rebrand to Pryme. A Nigerian business could hold dollars without holding a second institution.

2026Agentic operations

Accounts that do the work rather than only hold value. Five agents on the account, inside a policy you write — which is where the new mark starts.

Questions

The things people ask us first.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives people and businesses in Nigeria one account that holds Naira alongside dollars, pounds and euros, and a set of agents that do the running of it — keeping the books, chasing what is owed, answering customers and paying bills. Nothing leaves an account without the owner’s approval.

Can I hold dollars, pounds and euros in a Pryme account?

Yes. A Pryme account holds Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros side by side on one ledger, each with its own account details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area. You can swap between them at a rate you set, and every currency has its own statement.

What is Spaces?

Spaces is available in Nigeria. It gives a shopper money to spend that can only be spent with a participating business. The business is paid into its Naira account whether or not the shopper repays, because Pryme carries the credit. For the business it is free to join, there is nothing monthly, and the customer’s identity is never shown — only a reference and what it is worth.

What do the agents on a Pryme Business Account do?

Five agents come with the account. The Chief of Staff runs the week and keeps what is stuck moving. Finance watches the money and keeps the books as you trade. Compliance keeps the filings on time and screens what moves. Sales chases what you are owed. Customer Support answers your customers and follows up. Each has a job description, a budget and a ceiling you set, and each one proposes rather than acts — nothing leaves the account without your signature.

How does Pryme Pay work?

Pryme Pay takes payments on your own site or on a checkout page you control. The buyer is given a one-time account number and transfers to it from any bank app or by USSD — no card, no OTP, nothing to type in. The money lands in the same account your agents are running, already matched to the order and already in your books.

What are Savings Boxes?

Savings Boxes are separate pots inside a Pryme account, held in Naira. Flexible Boxes can be withdrawn at any time, Fixed Boxes hold to a date, Investment Boxes hold for longer, and Interest-free Boxes earn nothing by design. A business can use them to ring-fence payroll and the tax it withholds, so that money cannot be spent by accident.

Who holds my money, and is it protected?

Pryme is a financial technology company, not a bank. Accounts and deposits are provided by Solid Allianze Microfinance Bank Limited, which is licensed by the Central Bank of Nigeria and is a member of the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation.

Can I build on Pryme?

Yes. Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives you one account that holds US dollars, pounds sterling and euros beside Naira, with an assistant that runs the account for you and asks before anything moves. Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, and further markets open as each licence lands.

Can I open a Pryme account from outside Nigeria?

Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, subject to verification and approval. Foreign-currency balances are held and converted inside that account, so you can hold, receive and swap dollars, pounds and euros wherever you are.

Which currencies can I hold with Pryme?

Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros, side by side on one ledger. Each has its own details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area — and each has its own statement.

How do I send money to Nigeria with Pryme?

Swap at a rate you set rather than the rate of the day, then send to any Pryme username or to a Nigerian bank account. There is no fee to send to another Pryme account.

What does the assistant do?

Eva is the assistant inside the Pryme app. She opens accounts, moves money, saves toward your goals, pays what is due and follows up what is owed to you — and asks you before anything moves.

What is Pryme Rails?

Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

Bad debts and write-offs: what an AI finance agent should decide

How an AI finance agent tracks doubtful customer balances, prepares provisions and write-offs, and why writing off a debt should stay a person's decision.

The short answer

An AI finance agent can track overdue balances, flag debts that are becoming doubtful, propose a provision and prepare the paperwork for a write-off or tax relief claim. It should not write off a customer balance itself: deciding that a debt will not be collected, and ending the chase, is a commercial and sometimes legal judgement for a person.

Overdue, doubtful and bad

Not every late invoice is a bad debt. It helps to separate three stages, because each calls for different action in the books:

Overdue
Past its due date but still expected to be paid. The invoice stays in debtors and the chase continues.
Doubtful
There is real reason to think it may not be paid, such as a dispute, broken promises or news that the customer is in difficulty. Many businesses record a provision, reducing the reported value of debtors without removing the invoice.
Bad
You have concluded it will not be collected. The debt is written off, which removes it from debtors and records the loss.

Moving a debt from one stage to the next is a judgement. An agent can supply the evidence; it should not make the call alone.

What the agent watches

  • Ageing: how long each balance has been overdue, by customer and in total.
  • Payment behaviour: whether a customer who used to pay in 30 days now takes 75.
  • Promises: dates a customer committed to and whether they were kept.
  • Disputes: open queries or complaints linked to the invoice.
  • Partial payments: small amounts paid against a large balance, often a sign of strain.
  • Concentration: how much of your total debtors sits with one customer.

From these, the agent can list balances it considers at risk each month, with the reasons. Entities reporting under IFRS 9 estimate expected credit losses; a small business may use a simpler policy, such as providing for a percentage of balances over a set age. Agree the approach with your accountant, and the agent can apply it consistently.

Write-offs and tax relief

A write-off may allow tax relief, but the rules are specific and differ by country. Two examples:

  • UK VAT. HMRC's VAT Notice 700/18 explains that VAT-registered businesses can generally claim bad debt relief on VAT already paid to HMRC if the debt has been unpaid for at least six months from the later of the due date and the date of supply, it has been written off in the accounts, and the claim is made within four years and six months. Other conditions apply.
  • US income tax. The IRS explains that to deduct a business bad debt you generally must have included the amount in income or lent cash, the debt must be worthless, and you must show reasonable steps to collect it. Cash-method taxpayers generally cannot deduct unpaid fees they never recorded as income.

These are summaries for general information. An agent can track the dates and evidence each rule needs, and remind you when a debt first becomes eligible, but whether and when to claim is for you and your adviser.

A ceiling for write-offs

ItemSuggested handling
Rounding or bank-charge differences under a small set amountAgent writes off within its limit
Overdue balance, no disputeAgent continues the agreed reminder sequence
Balance with an open disputeBrought to a person; chase paused while resolved
Balance the agent rates as doubtfulProvision proposed; person approves
Any customer balance write-offPerson decides; agent records the reason
Write-off for a connected party or staff memberOwner or board only

The last row matters for control. Writing off a debt is also a way to hide a payment that was diverted, which is why the decision should never rest with the same person, or agent, that collects the money. For approval design more generally, see who should approve payments in a small business.

A worked example

Example only, in US dollars. A contractor has $64,000 in debtors. At the June close, the agent flags three balances:

  1. $5,200 from a client 95 days overdue with two missed promised dates and a partial $500 payment. The agent proposes a 50% provision under the agreed policy. The owner approves.
  2. $1,800 from a client who has disputed the work. The agent pauses reminders and links the dispute record. The owner decides to offer a credit of $600.
  3. $340 from a business that has closed, with returned letters and no reply. The agent prepares a write-off with the collection history attached. The owner approves after asking the accountant about the tax position.

Notice that the agent treated the three cases differently. The first had a pattern of broken promises, the second a dispute about the work, the third a customer that no longer exists. A single rule such as 'write off anything over 90 days' would have handled all three badly, which is why the categories above call for a person.

Each decision is recorded with who made it and why, which is the evidence a tax authority or auditor would expect to see.

Where Pryme fits

On a Pryme Business account, the Finance agent manages working capital, including the debtors position, and works only inside its mandate; write-offs above the line you set come to you with the evidence. The Sales agent keeps the record of promises made by customers, and the Chief of Staff brings the decisions together so you see them in one place.

Questions people ask

When should I write off a bad debt?

When you have concluded, on the evidence, that it will not be collected. Your accountant can advise on timing for accounts and tax.

Is a provision the same as a write-off?

No. A provision reduces the reported value of debtors while you keep chasing; a write-off removes the debt and records the loss.

Can I still chase a debt after writing it off?

Generally yes. If money is later received, it is recorded as a recovery. Check any tax adjustments with an adviser.

Can I charge interest on late business debts?

In the UK, GOV.UK explains that businesses can usually claim statutory interest of 8% plus the Bank of England base rate on late business-to-business payments, unless the contract sets a different rate. Other countries differ.
