Questions

The things people ask us first.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives people and businesses in Nigeria one account that holds Naira alongside dollars, pounds and euros, and a set of agents that do the running of it — keeping the books, chasing what is owed, answering customers and paying bills. Nothing leaves an account without the owner’s approval.

Can I hold dollars, pounds and euros in a Pryme account?

Yes. A Pryme account holds Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros side by side on one ledger, each with its own account details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area. You can swap between them at a rate you set, and every currency has its own statement.

What is Spaces?

Spaces is available in Nigeria. It gives a shopper money to spend that can only be spent with a participating business. The business is paid into its Naira account whether or not the shopper repays, because Pryme carries the credit. For the business it is free to join, there is nothing monthly, and the customer’s identity is never shown — only a reference and what it is worth.

What do the agents on a Pryme Business Account do?

Five agents come with the account. The Chief of Staff runs the week and keeps what is stuck moving. Finance watches the money and keeps the books as you trade. Compliance keeps the filings on time and screens what moves. Sales chases what you are owed. Customer Support answers your customers and follows up. Each has a job description, a budget and a ceiling you set, and each one proposes rather than acts — nothing leaves the account without your signature.

How does Pryme Pay work?

Pryme Pay takes payments on your own site or on a checkout page you control. The buyer is given a one-time account number and transfers to it from any bank app or by USSD — no card, no OTP, nothing to type in. The money lands in the same account your agents are running, already matched to the order and already in your books.

What are Savings Boxes?

Savings Boxes are separate pots inside a Pryme account, held in Naira. Flexible Boxes can be withdrawn at any time, Fixed Boxes hold to a date, Investment Boxes hold for longer, and Interest-free Boxes earn nothing by design. A business can use them to ring-fence payroll and the tax it withholds, so that money cannot be spent by accident.

Who holds my money, and is it protected?

Pryme is a financial technology company, not a bank. Accounts and deposits are provided by Solid Allianze Microfinance Bank Limited, which is licensed by the Central Bank of Nigeria and is a member of the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation.

Can I build on Pryme?

Yes. Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives you one account that holds US dollars, pounds sterling and euros beside Naira, with an assistant that runs the account for you and asks before anything moves. Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, and further markets open as each licence lands.

Can I open a Pryme account from outside Nigeria?

Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, subject to verification and approval. Foreign-currency balances are held and converted inside that account, so you can hold, receive and swap dollars, pounds and euros wherever you are.

Which currencies can I hold with Pryme?

Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros, side by side on one ledger. Each has its own details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area — and each has its own statement.

How do I send money to Nigeria with Pryme?

Swap at a rate you set rather than the rate of the day, then send to any Pryme username or to a Nigerian bank account. There is no fee to send to another Pryme account.

What does the assistant do?

Eva is the assistant inside the Pryme app. She opens accounts, moves money, saves toward your goals, pays what is due and follows up what is owed to you — and asks you before anything moves.

What is Pryme Rails?

Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

Baby products shop: stock, suppliers and margins

Starting a baby products shop in Nigeria: what to stock first, finding distributors, thin margins on diapers and formula, and a sample stock budget.

The short answer

A baby products shop earns most of its traffic from fast-moving items such as diapers, wipes and infant formula, which usually carry thin margins because customers compare prices, and most of its profit from slower items such as clothing, feeding accessories and toiletries. Start-up cost depends mainly on stock and rent; the labelled example below uses about ₦600,000 of opening stock.

How a baby shop makes money

Parents buy diapers and wipes every week and formula every few days for some babies. Those items bring people back, but because the same brands are sold in supermarkets, pharmacies and online, their prices are easy to compare. Shops therefore tend to price them close to the market and make better margins on items where price comparison is harder: baby clothes, blankets, bottles and teats, toiletries, toys and gift sets. Think of the fast movers as the reason customers come, and the rest of the shelf as where you earn.

What to stock first

CategoryRole in the shopNotes
Diapers (by size)TrafficStock the sizes that sell locally; newborn sizes move fast but babies outgrow them
WipesTrafficSmall, frequent purchase
Infant formula and cerealsTrafficWatch expiry dates; store away from heat
Feeding items (bottles, teats, bibs)MarginReplace every few months, good add-on sale
Toiletries (soap, lotion, powder)MarginCheck labels and expiry
Clothing and blanketsMarginGift buyers and new parents
Gift sets and baby shower itemsMarginSeasonal and event-driven

Finding suppliers

  • Brand distributors: the most reliable source for diapers and formula. Ask about minimum order, credit terms and delivery.
  • Wholesale markets: useful for clothing and accessories, and for topping up fast movers between distributor deliveries.
  • Pharmacy wholesalers: some carry baby toiletries and formula.
  • Check what you buy: NAFDAC registers packaged food products in Nigeria (its 2019 tariff sets out registration fees for food). Check that formula and cereals carry the registration details on the pack, that seals are intact and that expiry dates leave enough time to sell.

Sample stock budget

Example only, illustrative prices; get current quotes from your distributor.

ItemQuantityUnit costTotal
Diapers (mixed sizes)20 bags₦12,000₦240,000
Wipes40 packs₦1,500₦60,000
Infant formula24 tins₦9,000₦216,000
Feeding items, toiletries, clothingassorted₦84,000
Opening stock total₦600,000

On top of stock, budget for rent, shelving, a fan or cooling to protect formula from heat, signage and a few weeks of running costs. Rent varies enormously by city and street, so get local quotes.

Margins and turnover

Example only. If a bag of diapers costing ₦12,000 sells at ₦13,500, the margin is ₦1,500, or about 11% of the selling price (₦1,500 ÷ ₦13,500). A ₦3,000 baby outfit sold at ₦5,000 earns ₦2,000, or 40% of the selling price. Selling 20 bags of diapers a week earns ₦30,000 gross; selling 10 outfits earns ₦20,000 from far less stock money (₦30,000 of outfits against ₦240,000 of diapers).

Turnover matters as much as margin. Diapers that sell in a week return your money quickly. Clothing that sits for two months ties up cash, and sizes or styles can go out of fashion. Track each category weekly: what sold, what remains, and what to reorder.

Prices move

Food inflation was 19.59% year on year in September 2026 according to NBS figures reported by Voice of Nigeria, above the 14.63% headline rate. Formula and cereals are food items, so distributor prices can change between orders. Reprice new stock when it arrives rather than keeping old shelf prices; our guide to pricing when costs keep rising covers how.

Running the shop day to day

  • Expiry control: put new formula and toiletries behind older stock on the shelf so the oldest sells first, and check dates weekly.
  • Storage: keep formula and cereals away from direct sun and damp, and off the floor.
  • Size data: note which diaper sizes and clothing sizes sell, and reorder by size, not by brand alone.
  • Bundles: newborn packs and baby shower gift sets raise the value of each sale without cutting prices on fast movers.
  • Regular customers: a phone list of parents who buy weekly lets you tell them when stock arrives.
  • Cash flow: distributors may want payment upfront at first; ask for credit terms once you have a record with them.

What to check first

  1. Visit nearby supermarkets and pharmacies and note their prices on the top diaper and formula brands.
  2. Get written quotes from at least two distributors.
  3. Choose a location near where young families live, shop or attend clinics.
  4. Register a business name if you want a business account; the CAC's May 2025 schedule lists ₦20,000 with certified copies.
  5. Set up a simple stock book or app before you open.

Where Pryme fits

A baby shop in Lagos, Abuja or Port Harcourt in the Grocery/Retail sector can join Spaces with a Pryme Business Account, so shoppers using Loans on Spaces can buy from it. Read how to join Spaces as a merchant and take payments with bank-transfer checkout.

Questions people ask

How much do I need to start a baby shop in Nigeria?

It depends mostly on rent and stock. The labelled example uses about ₦600,000 of opening stock; add rent, shelving and running costs from local quotes.

Is diaper business profitable in Nigeria?

Diapers sell often but usually on thin margins because prices are easy to compare. Shops pair them with higher-margin items such as clothing and accessories.

Where can I buy baby products wholesale?

From brand distributors for diapers and formula, and from wholesale markets for clothing and accessories. Compare written quotes and check expiry dates.

How do I know if baby formula is original?

Buy from recognised distributors, check the seal and expiry date, and look for the NAFDAC registration details on the pack.
