Questions

The things people ask us first.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives people and businesses in Nigeria one account that holds Naira alongside dollars, pounds and euros, and a set of agents that do the running of it — keeping the books, chasing what is owed, answering customers and paying bills. Nothing leaves an account without the owner’s approval.

Can I hold dollars, pounds and euros in a Pryme account?

Yes. A Pryme account holds Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros side by side on one ledger, each with its own account details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area. You can swap between them at a rate you set, and every currency has its own statement.

What is Spaces?

Spaces is available in Nigeria. It gives a shopper money to spend that can only be spent with a participating business. The business is paid into its Naira account whether or not the shopper repays, because Pryme carries the credit. For the business it is free to join, there is nothing monthly, and the customer’s identity is never shown — only a reference and what it is worth.

What do the agents on a Pryme Business Account do?

Five agents come with the account. The Chief of Staff runs the week and keeps what is stuck moving. Finance watches the money and keeps the books as you trade. Compliance keeps the filings on time and screens what moves. Sales chases what you are owed. Customer Support answers your customers and follows up. Each has a job description, a budget and a ceiling you set, and each one proposes rather than acts — nothing leaves the account without your signature.

How does Pryme Pay work?

Pryme Pay takes payments on your own site or on a checkout page you control. The buyer is given a one-time account number and transfers to it from any bank app or by USSD — no card, no OTP, nothing to type in. The money lands in the same account your agents are running, already matched to the order and already in your books.

What are Savings Boxes?

Savings Boxes are separate pots inside a Pryme account, held in Naira. Flexible Boxes can be withdrawn at any time, Fixed Boxes hold to a date, Investment Boxes hold for longer, and Interest-free Boxes earn nothing by design. A business can use them to ring-fence payroll and the tax it withholds, so that money cannot be spent by accident.

Who holds my money, and is it protected?

Pryme is a financial technology company, not a bank. Accounts and deposits are provided by Solid Allianze Microfinance Bank Limited, which is licensed by the Central Bank of Nigeria and is a member of the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation.

Can I build on Pryme?

Yes. Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives you one account that holds US dollars, pounds sterling and euros beside Naira, with an assistant that runs the account for you and asks before anything moves. Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, and further markets open as each licence lands.

Can I open a Pryme account from outside Nigeria?

Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, subject to verification and approval. Foreign-currency balances are held and converted inside that account, so you can hold, receive and swap dollars, pounds and euros wherever you are.

Which currencies can I hold with Pryme?

Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros, side by side on one ledger. Each has its own details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area — and each has its own statement.

How do I send money to Nigeria with Pryme?

Swap at a rate you set rather than the rate of the day, then send to any Pryme username or to a Nigerian bank account. There is no fee to send to another Pryme account.

What does the assistant do?

Eva is the assistant inside the Pryme app. She opens accounts, moves money, saves toward your goals, pays what is due and follows up what is owed to you — and asks you before anything moves.

What is Pryme Rails?

Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

Setting up an authenticator app: Google vs Microsoft vs Authy

How to set up Google Authenticator, Microsoft Authenticator or Authy, store backup codes, and what each app does when your phone is lost.

The short answer

All three apps make the same six-digit codes, so the choice comes down to backup. Google Authenticator syncs codes if you sign in to a Google Account, Microsoft Authenticator restores only to the same type of phone, and Authy needs its backup password or the codes are lost. Save every service’s backup codes on paper whichever you choose.

What an authenticator app does, in one paragraph

An authenticator app turns your phone into a code generator. When you switch on two-step verification for an account (Gmail, a crypto exchange, a savings app, a business tool), the service shows you a QR code. You scan it once with the authenticator, and from then on the app shows a fresh six-digit code that changes every short interval. To log in you type your password and the current code. Because the code is made on the phone itself rather than sent by text, it cannot be diverted by a SIM swap. If you want the wider comparison with SMS codes first, read authenticator app vs SMS codes.

The three apps most Nigerians are choosing between are Google Authenticator, Microsoft Authenticator and Authy (run by Twilio). All three produce the same standard codes, so any service that says "use an authenticator app" will work with any of them. Where they differ is in backup, moving to a new phone and what happens when the phone is lost. That is the part people skip, and it is the part that decides whether a lost phone is an inconvenience or a week of locked accounts.

Side by side: backup and recovery

Google AuthenticatorMicrosoft AuthenticatorAuthy
Cloud backupOptional: sign in to your Google Account in the app and codes sync, encrypted in transit and at restOptional: "Cloud Backup" toggle; on Android it is stored in a Microsoft personal accountOptional: "Backups" protected by a backup password you set
If you do not turn backup onCodes stay on that one phone onlyCodes are not restorableTwilio says you will lose your 2FA tokens
Moving phonesSync by signing in, or Menu > Transfer codes > Export codes as a QR and Import on the new phoneRestore from backup, but only to the same type of phone (iPhone to iPhone, Android to Android)Reinstall counts as a new registration; approve by SMS or from an existing device
Known catchDeleting a code deletes it on every synced deviceWork or school accounts restore as a name only and need signing in again; Android backup moves to Google One backup from January 2027Account recovery with no other device takes 24 hours; the backup password cannot be reset

Sources: Google Account Help, Microsoft Support and Twilio Support pages listed below, all read in October 2026. These pages change, so check the app’s own help if a menu name differs on your phone.

Setting up each one

Google Authenticator

  1. Install Google Authenticator from the official store on your phone.
  2. Open it and, if you want backup, sign in with your Google Account. Google says signing in syncs your codes so they can be used on other devices (Android needs app version 6.0 or later for sync).
  3. On the service you are protecting, choose two-step verification, then "authenticator app". Scan the QR code it shows.
  4. Type the six-digit code back into the service to confirm. Save the backup or recovery codes the service gives you.
  5. Consider turning on the app’s Privacy Screen, which asks for your screen lock before codes show.

One practical note from Google’s help page: the app uses your phone’s clock, and codes fail if the time is wrong. Leave date and time on automatic.

Microsoft Authenticator

  1. Install Microsoft Authenticator from the official store.
  2. Add each account by scanning the service’s QR code (choose "other account" for non-Microsoft services).
  3. Turn on Cloud Backup in the app’s settings. On Android you pick a Microsoft personal account to hold the backup.
  4. Write down that the backup can only be restored to the same platform. If you are an Android user thinking of moving to an iPhone, plan to move each account manually.

Authy

  1. Install Authy and register with your phone number.
  2. Add accounts by scanning their QR codes.
  3. Turn on Backups and set a backup password you will remember. Store it in a password manager or on paper somewhere safe.
  4. In Settings > Devices, decide on "Allow multi-device". Twilio says having it on (with backups) is what lets you move phones without the 24-hour recovery wait. Turn it off again once your devices are added, so nobody else can add one.

Backup codes: the step that saves you

Every serious service that offers authenticator login also gives you a set of one-time backup or recovery codes when you set it up. These are your way back in if the phone and the app are both gone. Treat them like a spare key:

  • Print them or write them on paper, and keep that paper at home, not in your wallet or phone case.
  • Or store them in a password manager that is protected separately from the phone (see password managers for Nigerians).
  • Never screenshot them into your gallery. A gallery that syncs to the cloud, or a phone in someone else’s hands, exposes them.
  • Each code usually works once. Cross one off when you use it and generate a new set when you are running low.

What happens when the phone is lost

This is where the three apps truly differ, so think about it before you choose.

  • Google Authenticator, synced: Google’s help page says to remotely erase the phone if you can, then remove the lost device from your Google Account. Install the app on the new phone, sign in, and your codes sync back.
  • Google Authenticator, not synced: the codes were only on the lost phone. Google says you then need to visit every site where you set it up, remove the old codes and link the new phone. You will need each site’s backup codes or its account recovery process to get in.
  • Microsoft Authenticator with Cloud Backup: restore on a new phone of the same type. Third-party codes come back; work or school accounts need signing in again.
  • Authy with backups and another device: approve the new phone from the other device or by SMS, then enter your backup password. Without another device, recovery takes 24 hours, and if you forgot the backup password Twilio says the tokens are lost.

Whichever app you use, the lost phone itself must also be dealt with: lock or erase it, and log out of banking apps. Our guide to logging out of banking apps remotely covers that part.

Which should you pick?

There is no single right answer, only a fit for how you live:

  • If your life already runs on a Google Account and you will keep that account well protected, Google Authenticator with sync is the simplest to recover.
  • If you use Microsoft 365 for work, Microsoft Authenticator keeps work sign-in approvals and personal codes in one place, as long as you accept the same-platform restore rule.
  • If you switch between Android and iPhone, or use more than one device, Authy’s multi-device model may suit you, provided you keep the backup password safe.

Where Pryme fits

Pryme uses an authenticator app for sign-in approval rather than SMS codes, alongside a separate transaction PIN, so the set-up above is what you would use with your Pryme account too. Details are on our security page, and you can open an account from any country.

Questions people ask

Can I use Google Authenticator for my bank app in Nigeria?

Only if your bank or app offers sign-in with a standard authenticator app. Many Nigerian banks use their own in-app soft token instead. Check your bank’s security settings or help page.

What happens if I lose my phone with Google Authenticator on it?

If you signed in to a Google Account in the app, your codes sync to a new phone when you sign in. If you did not, Google says you must go to each site, remove the old codes and link the new phone, using backup codes to get in.

Can I move Microsoft Authenticator from Android to iPhone?

Not by backup. Microsoft says backups can only be restored to the same device type, so you would re-add each account on the new phone.

I forgot my Authy backup password, what now?

Twilio says account recovery does not reset the backup password, and without it your tokens are lost. You would need each site’s backup codes or recovery process to set up 2FA again.
