Questions

The things people ask us first.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives people and businesses in Nigeria one account that holds Naira alongside dollars, pounds and euros, and a set of agents that do the running of it — keeping the books, chasing what is owed, answering customers and paying bills. Nothing leaves an account without the owner’s approval.

Can I hold dollars, pounds and euros in a Pryme account?

Yes. A Pryme account holds Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros side by side on one ledger, each with its own account details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area. You can swap between them at a rate you set, and every currency has its own statement.

What is Spaces?

Spaces is available in Nigeria. It gives a shopper money to spend that can only be spent with a participating business. The business is paid into its Naira account whether or not the shopper repays, because Pryme carries the credit. For the business it is free to join, there is nothing monthly, and the customer’s identity is never shown — only a reference and what it is worth.

What do the agents on a Pryme Business Account do?

Five agents come with the account. The Chief of Staff runs the week and keeps what is stuck moving. Finance watches the money and keeps the books as you trade. Compliance keeps the filings on time and screens what moves. Sales chases what you are owed. Customer Support answers your customers and follows up. Each has a job description, a budget and a ceiling you set, and each one proposes rather than acts — nothing leaves the account without your signature.

How does Pryme Pay work?

Pryme Pay takes payments on your own site or on a checkout page you control. The buyer is given a one-time account number and transfers to it from any bank app or by USSD — no card, no OTP, nothing to type in. The money lands in the same account your agents are running, already matched to the order and already in your books.

What are Savings Boxes?

Savings Boxes are separate pots inside a Pryme account, held in Naira. Flexible Boxes can be withdrawn at any time, Fixed Boxes hold to a date, Investment Boxes hold for longer, and Interest-free Boxes earn nothing by design. A business can use them to ring-fence payroll and the tax it withholds, so that money cannot be spent by accident.

Who holds my money, and is it protected?

Pryme is a financial technology company, not a bank. Accounts and deposits are provided by Solid Allianze Microfinance Bank Limited, which is licensed by the Central Bank of Nigeria and is a member of the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation.

Can I build on Pryme?

Yes. Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives you one account that holds US dollars, pounds sterling and euros beside Naira, with an assistant that runs the account for you and asks before anything moves. Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, and further markets open as each licence lands.

Can I open a Pryme account from outside Nigeria?

Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, subject to verification and approval. Foreign-currency balances are held and converted inside that account, so you can hold, receive and swap dollars, pounds and euros wherever you are.

Which currencies can I hold with Pryme?

Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros, side by side on one ledger. Each has its own details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area — and each has its own statement.

How do I send money to Nigeria with Pryme?

Swap at a rate you set rather than the rate of the day, then send to any Pryme username or to a Nigerian bank account. There is no fee to send to another Pryme account.

What does the assistant do?

Eva is the assistant inside the Pryme app. She opens accounts, moves money, saves toward your goals, pays what is due and follows up what is owed to you — and asks you before anything moves.

What is Pryme Rails?

Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

Card skimming at ATMs in Nigeria: how it works, what to check

How ATM skimmers and hidden PIN cameras work, a 30-second physical check before you insert your card, and what to do if you suspect a skimmer.

The short answer

Card skimming means a hidden device copies the data on your card's magnetic stripe while a tiny camera or fake keypad records your PIN, so criminals can make a cloned card and withdraw cash. Before you insert your card, pull gently on the card slot and keypad, look for pinhole cameras above the keypad, cover the keypad with your other hand, and prefer ATMs inside bank premises; if anything moves or looks added, use another machine and tell the bank.

Skimming is a quiet crime. Nothing feels wrong at the machine. The card comes back, the cash comes out, and days later there are withdrawals you did not make. Understanding how the kit works makes the check at the machine quick and sensible rather than paranoid.

How skimming works

A skimming attack needs two things: your card data and your PIN.

  • The skimmer is a device fitted over or inside the card slot. As the card goes in, it reads the magnetic stripe. Some are bulky overlays; others are thin plates pushed inside the slot (often called "shimmers" when they target the chip interface).
  • The PIN capture is a pinhole camera hidden in a strip above the keypad, in a light panel or in a fake leaflet holder, or a thin fake keypad laid over the real one.
  • The cash-out: the data is written to a blank card and used with the recorded PIN, often at another location.

Chip cards are harder to clone than stripe-only cards, but a skimmed stripe may still be usable wherever a machine falls back to the stripe. The PIN is the second key; protecting it defeats many attacks even if the card data is copied.

A 30-second check before you insert your card

  1. Look at the whole front. Does any part have a different colour, finish or gap compared with the rest of the machine, or with the ATM next to it?
  2. Pull the card slot. Grip it gently and tug. A genuine slot does not move. Anything that wobbles, lifts or feels glued is a warning.
  3. Press the keypad edges. A fake overlay may sit higher, feel spongy or lift at a corner.
  4. Look above the keypad. Check the strip above the screen, the light panel and any leaflet holder for a tiny hole or lens.
  5. Cover the keypad. Use your other hand or your wallet as a shield while you type. This alone defeats camera capture.
  6. Watch the card return. If the machine keeps your card unexpectedly, do not walk away; call the bank from the spot.

Where risk is higher

Machines inside a bank hall or a guarded lobby are harder to tamper with than standalone machines in quiet places. Late-night use at isolated machines, and machines with handwritten "out of order" notes on the next ATM directing you to one in particular, deserve extra care. Busy queues create a different risk: shoulder-surfing and card swaps, covered in ATM helpers and card swaps.

Not only ATMs

The same kit can be fitted to card readers elsewhere, and a handheld skimmer can be used by anyone who takes your card out of your sight. At filling stations, restaurants and shops, keep the card where you can see it, insert it yourself into the POS terminal, and shield the keypad. If a terminal looks bulky, has loose parts, or the attendant insists on taking the card to another room, pay by transfer instead. Our guide to POS fraud covers terminal tricks in detail.

If you think your card was skimmed

  1. Block the card or account at once. Use the app, the fraud line or the bank's USSD block code. Examples from banks' own pages: GTBank lists *737*911# for account block, and Zenith's code reported in 2019 is *966*911#. Dial from the phone number registered on the account.
  2. Call the bank's fraud desk. The CBN Consumer Protection Regulations require institutions to keep emergency fraud reporting channels open at all times (section 6.2.4). See bank fraud desk numbers.
  3. Dispute the withdrawals in writing. Ask for a tracking number; acknowledgement is required within 24 hours (sections 6.2.2 and 6.3.2), and card complaints have short resolution timelines under Annexure D.
  4. Note the ATM's location, owner bank, date and time. CCTV and machine logs are how the bank investigates.
  5. Request a new card and PIN.

Unauthorised debits must be refunded with interest under section 6.3.7 where the institution finds them unauthorised. Whether you are refunded depends on the investigation and on whether you kept your PIN secret; see will your bank refund you after fraud.

Habits that reduce the risk

  • Turn on transaction alerts so a withdrawal you did not make shows up within minutes.
  • Set a daily ATM limit in your app if your bank allows it.
  • Never write your PIN down near your card. No bank will ask you for it: Fidelity Bank's scam alert page, for example, says it never requests your full card number, PIN, OTP, password or BVN.
  • Use cardless or app withdrawals where available, so no card goes into the slot.

Where Pryme fits

Pryme accounts use an authenticator app and a transaction PIN rather than SMS codes for approvals. See Pryme security.

Questions people ask

How do I know if an ATM has a skimmer?

Pull gently on the card slot and press the keypad edges. Anything loose, raised or a different colour from the rest of the machine is a warning. Also look for a pinhole camera above the keypad.

Can chip cards be skimmed in Nigeria?

Chip cards are harder to clone, but the magnetic stripe can still be copied by a skimmer, and a stolen PIN is the key criminals need. Covering the keypad helps most.

What should I do if money was withdrawn from my account without my card?

Block the card or account immediately, call your bank's fraud desk, then dispute the withdrawals in writing and ask for a tracking number.

How do I block my ATM card quickly?

Use your bank app, the fraud line or the USSD block code from your registered number, for example *737*911# on GTBank as listed on its 737 page.
