Questions

The things people ask us first.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives people and businesses in Nigeria one account that holds Naira alongside dollars, pounds and euros, and a set of agents that do the running of it — keeping the books, chasing what is owed, answering customers and paying bills. Nothing leaves an account without the owner’s approval.

Can I hold dollars, pounds and euros in a Pryme account?

Yes. A Pryme account holds Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros side by side on one ledger, each with its own account details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area. You can swap between them at a rate you set, and every currency has its own statement.

What is Spaces?

Spaces is available in Nigeria. It gives a shopper money to spend that can only be spent with a participating business. The business is paid into its Naira account whether or not the shopper repays, because Pryme carries the credit. For the business it is free to join, there is nothing monthly, and the customer’s identity is never shown — only a reference and what it is worth.

What do the agents on a Pryme Business Account do?

Five agents come with the account. The Chief of Staff runs the week and keeps what is stuck moving. Finance watches the money and keeps the books as you trade. Compliance keeps the filings on time and screens what moves. Sales chases what you are owed. Customer Support answers your customers and follows up. Each has a job description, a budget and a ceiling you set, and each one proposes rather than acts — nothing leaves the account without your signature.

How does Pryme Pay work?

Pryme Pay takes payments on your own site or on a checkout page you control. The buyer is given a one-time account number and transfers to it from any bank app or by USSD — no card, no OTP, nothing to type in. The money lands in the same account your agents are running, already matched to the order and already in your books.

What are Savings Boxes?

Savings Boxes are separate pots inside a Pryme account, held in Naira. Flexible Boxes can be withdrawn at any time, Fixed Boxes hold to a date, Investment Boxes hold for longer, and Interest-free Boxes earn nothing by design. A business can use them to ring-fence payroll and the tax it withholds, so that money cannot be spent by accident.

Who holds my money, and is it protected?

Pryme is a financial technology company, not a bank. Accounts and deposits are provided by Solid Allianze Microfinance Bank Limited, which is licensed by the Central Bank of Nigeria and is a member of the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation.

Can I build on Pryme?

Yes. Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives you one account that holds US dollars, pounds sterling and euros beside Naira, with an assistant that runs the account for you and asks before anything moves. Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, and further markets open as each licence lands.

Can I open a Pryme account from outside Nigeria?

Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, subject to verification and approval. Foreign-currency balances are held and converted inside that account, so you can hold, receive and swap dollars, pounds and euros wherever you are.

Which currencies can I hold with Pryme?

Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros, side by side on one ledger. Each has its own details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area — and each has its own statement.

How do I send money to Nigeria with Pryme?

Swap at a rate you set rather than the rate of the day, then send to any Pryme username or to a Nigerian bank account. There is no fee to send to another Pryme account.

What does the assistant do?

Eva is the assistant inside the Pryme app. She opens accounts, moves money, saves toward your goals, pays what is due and follows up what is owed to you — and asks you before anything moves.

What is Pryme Rails?

Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

Air cargo from Lagos to Houston: costs and timing

How air freight from Lagos is priced, which papers both ends need, and what decides how fast it clears at Houston’s Bush Intercontinental.

The short answer

Air cargo from Lagos to Houston (IAH) is priced per kilo of chargeable weight, the greater of actual and volumetric weight, plus surcharges, origin handling and US clearance costs. How long it takes depends less on the flight than on the paperwork: the Nigerian export documents, FDA prior notice for food (confirmed at least 4 hours before arrival by air), and a US customs entry with the 12.5% Section 301 tariff where it applies.

How the price is built

An air freight quote from Lagos is several charges added together. Asking for each line separately is the only way to compare forwarders.

ChargeWhat it coversWho sets it
Freight rate per kgAirport-to-airport carriage, on chargeable weightAirline or forwarder
SurchargesFuel, security and similar, often per kgAirline
Origin chargesCollection, packing, export handling and documentation in LagosForwarder and handling agent
Nigerian export documentsForm NXP for commercial exports, NAFDAC certificates for regulated productsExporter and its bank or agency
US clearanceCustoms entry, bond, FDA filings, broker feeCustoms broker
Duty and feesOrdinary HTS duty plus the Section 301 tariff on products of NigeriaCBP
Destination handlingStorage and release at the cargo terminal, deliveryHandling agent, trucker

Chargeable weight, with an example

Light, bulky cargo is charged on its volume. The forwarder converts the box size into a volumetric weight using a divisor stated in its terms, and charges the higher of that and the actual weight.

Example only: a carton of 60 x 50 x 40 cm weighs 18 kg. Its volume is 120,000 cubic cm. If the forwarder uses a divisor of 6,000, the volumetric weight is 20 kg, so you pay for 20 kg, not 18. Ten such cartons are charged as 200 kg. Packing tighter, or using smaller cartons, can cut the bill more than haggling over the rate.

Before it leaves Lagos

Commercial exports from Nigeria need an e-Form NXP, which the exporter processes through its bank on the CBN’s Trade Monitoring System; the exporter must have a valid tax ID. Food and other NAFDAC-regulated goods need NAFDAC export certification, which NAFDAC’s 2018 guideline says can take up to 28 working days in total, and which cannot be issued once the product has left Nigeria. Start these well before you book space.

Clearing at Houston

When the cargo lands at George Bush Intercontinental, it goes to the airline’s handling terminal and waits for CBP release. Release depends on what has been filed in advance.

  1. Customs entry. Since the $800 de minimis exemption was suspended, every commercial shipment needs an entry. Shipments up to $2,500 can usually use informal entry (19 CFR 143.21); above that, a formal entry and a bond.
  2. FDA prior notice for food. For air arrivals it must be confirmed by FDA at least 4 hours before arrival and can be filed up to 30 days ahead through ACE (21 CFR Part 1, Subpart I). Without it the food is refused and held at the importer’s cost.
  3. Food facility registration. The Nigerian facility that made or packed the food must be registered with FDA, with a US agent.
  4. Duty. The 12.5% Section 301 tariff on products of Nigeria applies from 24 July 2026, on top of ordinary duty, unless the product is in an annex exemption.

What decides the timing

Flight schedules change, so ask your forwarder for the current routing and whether it is direct or through a hub, since each transfer adds handling time. On the paperwork side, the usual causes of delay are:

  • NXP or NAFDAC certification not ready when the cargo is.
  • An airway bill that does not match the commercial invoice or packing list.
  • Prior notice filed late or with the wrong facility registration number.
  • A CBP or FDA examination, which you pay for.
  • Duty not deposited, so release is not given.

Air or sea for Nigerian goods

Air suits small, high-value or time-sensitive goods: fashion samples, beauty products for a launch, documents, lightweight packaged foods with a short shelf life. Sea suits heavy or bulky goods where the per-kilo air rate would swamp the margin. The paperwork differs too. Ocean cargo needs an Importer Security Filing 24 hours before loading in Nigeria and a bond to cover it; air cargo does not, though it still needs a customs entry. FDA prior notice timing also differs: at least 4 hours before arrival by air, at least 8 hours by water.

A common pattern is to air-freight the first small order to test a product, then move to sea freight once sales are steady. See sea freight from Lagos to the US.

What to check first

  1. Ask for an itemised quote and the volumetric divisor used.
  2. Confirm the exporter will raise an NXP and, for food, has NAFDAC export certification in hand.
  3. For food, confirm the Nigerian facility’s FDA registration and who files prior notice.
  4. Appoint a broker at or for Houston before the cargo flies, and check whether you need a bond.

Where Pryme fits

Air freight is often paid in dollars in the US and in naira in Lagos. A Pryme Business Account opened from the US holds both, so you can pay origin charges in naira and the broker in dollars, with the rate and fee shown before you approve each conversion in Swap. Outside Nigeria, Pryme’s services are provided through regulated partners.

Questions people ask

How is air freight from Lagos to Houston charged?

Per kilo of chargeable weight, the higher of actual weight and volumetric weight, plus surcharges, origin handling, US clearance, duty and destination handling.

How long does air cargo from Lagos take to clear at IAH?

It depends on paperwork. With the entry filed, duty paid and, for food, FDA prior notice confirmed at least 4 hours before arrival, release can follow quickly; missing documents or an exam add days.

Do I pay duty on air cargo from Nigeria?

Yes. Ordinary HTS duty applies plus, from 24 July 2026, the 12.5% Section 301 tariff on products of Nigeria unless exempt. The $800 de minimis exemption is suspended.

Do I need ISF for air freight?

No, ISF applies only to ocean cargo. Air cargo still needs a customs entry and any FDA filings.
