Questions

The things people ask us first.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives people and businesses in Nigeria one account that holds Naira alongside dollars, pounds and euros, and a set of agents that do the running of it — keeping the books, chasing what is owed, answering customers and paying bills. Nothing leaves an account without the owner’s approval.

Can I hold dollars, pounds and euros in a Pryme account?

Yes. A Pryme account holds Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros side by side on one ledger, each with its own account details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area. You can swap between them at a rate you set, and every currency has its own statement.

What is Spaces?

Spaces is available in Nigeria. It gives a shopper money to spend that can only be spent with a participating business. The business is paid into its Naira account whether or not the shopper repays, because Pryme carries the credit. For the business it is free to join, there is nothing monthly, and the customer’s identity is never shown — only a reference and what it is worth.

What do the agents on a Pryme Business Account do?

Five agents come with the account. The Chief of Staff runs the week and keeps what is stuck moving. Finance watches the money and keeps the books as you trade. Compliance keeps the filings on time and screens what moves. Sales chases what you are owed. Customer Support answers your customers and follows up. Each has a job description, a budget and a ceiling you set, and each one proposes rather than acts — nothing leaves the account without your signature.

How does Pryme Pay work?

Pryme Pay takes payments on your own site or on a checkout page you control. The buyer is given a one-time account number and transfers to it from any bank app or by USSD — no card, no OTP, nothing to type in. The money lands in the same account your agents are running, already matched to the order and already in your books.

What are Savings Boxes?

Savings Boxes are separate pots inside a Pryme account, held in Naira. Flexible Boxes can be withdrawn at any time, Fixed Boxes hold to a date, Investment Boxes hold for longer, and Interest-free Boxes earn nothing by design. A business can use them to ring-fence payroll and the tax it withholds, so that money cannot be spent by accident.

Who holds my money, and is it protected?

Pryme is a financial technology company, not a bank. Accounts and deposits are provided by Solid Allianze Microfinance Bank Limited, which is licensed by the Central Bank of Nigeria and is a member of the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation.

Can I build on Pryme?

Yes. Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives you one account that holds US dollars, pounds sterling and euros beside Naira, with an assistant that runs the account for you and asks before anything moves. Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, and further markets open as each licence lands.

Can I open a Pryme account from outside Nigeria?

Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, subject to verification and approval. Foreign-currency balances are held and converted inside that account, so you can hold, receive and swap dollars, pounds and euros wherever you are.

Which currencies can I hold with Pryme?

Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros, side by side on one ledger. Each has its own details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area — and each has its own statement.

How do I send money to Nigeria with Pryme?

Swap at a rate you set rather than the rate of the day, then send to any Pryme username or to a Nigerian bank account. There is no fee to send to another Pryme account.

What does the assistant do?

Eva is the assistant inside the Pryme app. She opens accounts, moves money, saves toward your goals, pays what is due and follows up what is owed to you — and asks you before anything moves.

What is Pryme Rails?

Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

Using an AI agent to match Nigerian supplier invoices to payments

How an AI back-office agent can prepare matches between Nigerian supplier invoices and payments, why WHT and FX cause gaps, and where a person approves.

The short answer

An AI back-office agent can read Nigerian supplier invoices and your bank lines, propose matches by supplier, amount, currency, date and reference, and flag the gaps, such as withholding tax deducted, bank charges, part payments and exchange differences. It prepares; a person reviews and approves the matches and any write-offs. The agent is only as good as the data: consistent references and invoice numbers matter more than the software.

Matching invoices from Nigerian suppliers to payments is fiddly for a South African business. Payments go out in rand, dollars or naira; amounts arrive short because of withholding tax and charges; supplier names on invoices differ from bank names; and one transfer can cover three invoices. That makes it a good job for an AI agent, as long as everyone is clear about what the agent does and what a person still decides.

What the agent does

  1. Reads invoices (PDF, email, or e-invoice data) and extracts supplier, invoice number, date, currency, gross, VAT and any withholding tax line.
  2. Reads bank and payment data from each account, in each currency.
  3. Proposes matches using supplier, amount, currency, reference and date windows, including one-to-many and many-to-one matches.
  4. Explains each unmatched or partly matched item with a likely reason.
  5. Prepares the journal entries for differences (FX, charges, WHT) for review.
  6. Logs what it proposed and what the reviewer accepted or changed.

It does not approve its own work, post write-offs, change supplier bank details or release payments. Those stay with people, with limits set in your approval rules.

Why Nigerian invoices do not match neatly

GapCauseWhat the agent should propose
Payment short of invoiceNigerian WHT deducted by the payer, where you are the supplier being paidMatch net, flag WHT, request the WHT receipt
Payment short of invoiceIntermediary or receiving bank chargesMatch, post charges to bank charges
Rand amount differsExchange rate at payment differs from invoice dateMatch in invoice currency, post exchange difference
No obvious matchSeveral invoices paid in one transferPropose a grouped match using the remittance advice
Name mismatchTrading name on invoice, registered name at bankSuggest a supplier alias for a person to confirm

On withholding tax: PwC's summary of Nigeria's 2024 regulations says payers deduct at source on services, the deduction from non-residents on fees is generally final, and the payer must issue a receipt showing the gross amount and tax deducted. If your company is paid by Nigerian clients, an agent that spots short payments and asks for the receipt saves money at tax time (see WHT on payments to an SA company).

E-invoices help

Nigeria's NRS is rolling out e-invoicing through its Merchant Buyer Solution, under which invoices carry an Invoice Reference Number (IRN). The Guardian reported on 27 July 2026 that large taxpayers had a 31 July 2026 deadline, with medium taxpayers onboarding from July 2026. Where your Nigerian supplier issues IRN-bearing invoices, the IRN gives the agent a unique key to match on. See Nigeria's e-invoicing and SA suppliers.

Worked example (illustrative)

A Lagos packaging supplier sends three invoices: ₦2,400,000, ₦1,600,000 and ₦3,000,000. Your company pays ₦7,000,000 in one transfer with the reference "INV 114-116". The agent proposes a grouped match (₦2.4m + ₦1.6m + ₦3.0m = ₦7.0m), posts nothing, and shows the reviewer the three invoices, the bank line and the rand exchange difference against each invoice date. The reviewer approves in one step. Amounts are invented.

Getting your data ready

Most failed reconciliations are data problems, not software problems. Before switching an agent on, tidy the inputs it will learn from:

  • One supplier record per Nigerian supplier, with the registered name, trading name and Tax ID, and the currency they invoice in.
  • A rule that every outgoing payment reference carries the invoice number, in the same format each time.
  • Invoices kept in one inbox or folder the agent can read, rather than spread across staff phones.
  • Separate ledgers per currency, so a naira payment is never matched against a rand invoice by accident.
  • An agreed exchange rate source, so FX differences are calculated the same way each month (IAS 21 records transactions at the spot rate on the transaction date).

Start with one month of history. Compare the agent's proposals with what your bookkeeper did by hand, note where it went wrong, and fix the rule or data behind each miss before widening its scope.

Controls that make it safe

  • Set a value ceiling above which a second person must approve matches and write-offs.
  • Never let the agent change supplier bank details; route changes through a call-back check (see verifying a Nigerian supplier).
  • Review a sample of auto-suggested matches each month, not only the exceptions.
  • Keep the agent's log with your records; it shows who approved what.

For a wider view, see AI bank reconciliation: how it works and where it fails.

Where Pryme fits

Pryme Business Accounts come with a Finance agent, built by Pryme Intelligence, that prepares reconciliations and matches; a person approves above a set ceiling, and every action is recorded. See Chief of Staff for how the agents hand work to people.

Questions people ask

Can AI reconcile supplier invoices automatically?

It can propose matches and journals. Good practice is that a person approves matches and write-offs, especially above a set value.

Why is the payment from my Nigerian client less than my invoice?

Often withholding tax deducted at source, or bank charges. Ask the client for the WHT receipt showing gross amount and tax deducted.

Does Nigerian e-invoicing help reconciliation?

Yes where it applies. MBS e-invoices carry an Invoice Reference Number, a unique key to match on.

Should an AI agent be allowed to change supplier bank details?

No. Bank detail changes should go through a separate verification step handled by people.
