Ten years, one trunk

Questions

The things people ask us first.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives people and businesses in Nigeria one account that holds Naira alongside dollars, pounds and euros, and a set of agents that do the running of it — keeping the books, chasing what is owed, answering customers and paying bills. Nothing leaves an account without the owner’s approval.

Can I hold dollars, pounds and euros in a Pryme account?

Yes. A Pryme account holds Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros side by side on one ledger, each with its own account details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area. You can swap between them at a rate you set, and every currency has its own statement.

What is Spaces?

Spaces is available in Nigeria. It gives a shopper money to spend that can only be spent with a participating business. The business is paid into its Naira account whether or not the shopper repays, because Pryme carries the credit. For the business it is free to join, there is nothing monthly, and the customer’s identity is never shown — only a reference and what it is worth.

What do the agents on a Pryme Business Account do?

Five agents come with the account. The Chief of Staff runs the week and keeps what is stuck moving. Finance watches the money and keeps the books as you trade. Compliance keeps the filings on time and screens what moves. Sales chases what you are owed. Customer Support answers your customers and follows up. Each has a job description, a budget and a ceiling you set, and each one proposes rather than acts — nothing leaves the account without your signature.

How does Pryme Pay work?

Pryme Pay takes payments on your own site or on a checkout page you control. The buyer is given a one-time account number and transfers to it from any bank app or by USSD — no card, no OTP, nothing to type in. The money lands in the same account your agents are running, already matched to the order and already in your books.

What are Savings Boxes?

Savings Boxes are separate pots inside a Pryme account, held in Naira. Flexible Boxes can be withdrawn at any time, Fixed Boxes hold to a date, Investment Boxes hold for longer, and Interest-free Boxes earn nothing by design. A business can use them to ring-fence payroll and the tax it withholds, so that money cannot be spent by accident.

Who holds my money, and is it protected?

Pryme is a financial technology company, not a bank. Accounts and deposits are provided by Solid Allianze Microfinance Bank Limited, which is licensed by the Central Bank of Nigeria and is a member of the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation.

Can I build on Pryme?

Yes. Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives you one account that holds US dollars, pounds sterling and euros beside Naira, with an assistant that runs the account for you and asks before anything moves. Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, and further markets open as each licence lands.

Can I open a Pryme account from outside Nigeria?

Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, subject to verification and approval. Foreign-currency balances are held and converted inside that account, so you can hold, receive and swap dollars, pounds and euros wherever you are.

Which currencies can I hold with Pryme?

Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros, side by side on one ledger. Each has its own details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area — and each has its own statement.

How do I send money to Nigeria with Pryme?

Swap at a rate you set rather than the rate of the day, then send to any Pryme username or to a Nigerian bank account. There is no fee to send to another Pryme account.

What does the assistant do?

Eva is the assistant inside the Pryme app. She opens accounts, moves money, saves toward your goals, pays what is due and follows up what is owed to you — and asks you before anything moves.

What is Pryme Rails?

Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

Australia

Using an AI agent to reconcile AUD and naira statements

An AI agent can match AUD and naira transactions and flag what does not fit. What it prepares, what a person must approve, and how FX is handled.

The short answer

An AI agent can match transactions across AUD and naira statements, suggest the exchange rate used for each conversion, and list the items it cannot match, but a person should approve every match it proposes before the books are updated. The agent does the sorting; the decisions about unusual items, write-offs and rate policy stay with someone accountable, because the ATO expects foreign amounts translated at the right time and the figures must be defensible.

Why AUD and naira reconciliation is harder

Reconciling one Australian bank account against your accounting software is routine. Adding a naira account changes three things. Amounts on each side are in different currencies, so a payment from your AUD account and the credit on a Lagos supplier's side do not show the same number. Narrations from Nigerian banks are often short or truncated. And timing differs: a transfer started on a Friday in Sydney may arrive on a different date in Lagos.

Nigerian accounts follow the NUBAN standard: a 10-digit account number unique within each deposit-taking institution, according to BusinessDay's report of the CBN standard. The account number is the most reliable key for matching a payee, more reliable than the name in a narration.

What an agent prepares

  • Proposed matches: pairs a bank line with an invoice or bill using amount, date window, account number and reference.
  • Conversion details: for each AUD-to-naira conversion, the AUD that left, the naira that arrived and the implied rate.
  • Exceptions list: items with no match, duplicates, partial payments and amounts that differ from the invoice.
  • Rate differences: the gap between the rate your policy uses for the books and the rate actually obtained, ready to be posted as a foreign exchange gain or loss.
  • A summary: opening and closing balances on both accounts and what is still unexplained.

What a person must approve

An agent proposes; it should not post. Keep these decisions with a named person:

  1. Accepting proposed matches, especially where the amount or name is not an exact fit.
  2. Writing off small differences such as bank charges deducted in Nigeria.
  3. Choosing the exchange rate policy, and any change to it.
  4. Treating an unmatched credit as income, a refund or a mistaken payment.
  5. Closing the period.

A simple rule works well: the agent can auto-suggest anything below a set value with an exact amount and reference match; everything else goes to review. Every approval should be recorded with who approved it and when.

Setting the agent up

Most of the value comes from the first week of set-up rather than the software itself. Before the agent touches a live month, give it the information a new bookkeeper would need:

  • A list of regular payees with their bank names and 10-digit account numbers, and regular Australian customers with their references.
  • Your invoice numbering format, so it can read references from narrations.
  • The date window it may use for a match, for example three business days either side, wider for international transfers.
  • The value below which an exact match may be suggested for bulk approval.
  • Your exchange rate policy and where the rate for each month is stored.

Run it alongside your existing process for one or two months and compare the results line by line. Where the agent and the bookkeeper disagree, find out why before relying on it; the usual causes are missing payee details or a date window that is too narrow.

Handling the exchange rate

Your books are in Australian dollars, so naira balances have to be translated. The ATO's translation rules tie the rate to the time of the transaction or event and allow average rates in many cases; its rates page says a reasonable externally sourced rate may be used for a currency not in its tables. Tell the agent which source and method your policy uses so it applies them the same way every month. See which exchange rate to use for naira expenses.

Worked example

Example with illustrative figures only. In one month an agent reviews 140 lines across an AUD account and a naira account.

ResultLinesWho acts
Exact matches (amount, reference, account number)118Bookkeeper spot-checks and approves in bulk
Close matches (amount differs by a bank charge)12Bookkeeper approves each and posts the charge
Conversions with rate difference6Finance lead approves FX gain/loss entry
No match found4Finance lead investigates

Total: 118 + 12 + 6 + 4 = 140 lines. The time saved is in the 118; the risk sits in the other 22, which is why they go to a person.

Where it goes wrong

  • Matching on name alone, when Nigerian narrations may shorten or reorder names.
  • Letting the agent pick the rate it finds rather than the one your policy names.
  • Approving in bulk without opening the close matches.
  • No record of who approved what, which makes later review difficult.

For a general view of the method and its limits, see AI bank reconciliation: how it works and where it fails.

Where Pryme fits

Pryme Business Accounts come with a Finance agent and a Chief of Staff built by Pryme Intelligence. The Finance agent prepares matches and exception lists across the currencies in your account; a person approves anything above the ceiling you set, and every action is recorded. Statements can be issued as verifiable documents through VerifyDoc.ai, so your accountant can confirm they are unaltered (receipts and statements).

Questions people ask

Can AI reconcile my bank statements automatically?

It can propose matches and list exceptions, but a person should approve matches and adjustments before they are posted.

How does an agent handle naira and AUD on the same invoice?

It records the AUD that left and the naira that arrived, calculates the implied rate, and flags any difference from your policy rate for approval.

What should never be left to the agent?

Write-offs, changes to rate policy, treatment of unexplained credits and closing the period.

What do I match Nigerian payments on?

The 10-digit NUBAN account number and amount are more reliable than the name in a narration.
