Questions

The things people ask us first.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives people and businesses in Nigeria one account that holds Naira alongside dollars, pounds and euros, and a set of agents that do the running of it — keeping the books, chasing what is owed, answering customers and paying bills. Nothing leaves an account without the owner’s approval.

Can I hold dollars, pounds and euros in a Pryme account?

Yes. A Pryme account holds Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros side by side on one ledger, each with its own account details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area. You can swap between them at a rate you set, and every currency has its own statement.

What is Spaces?

Spaces is available in Nigeria. It gives a shopper money to spend that can only be spent with a participating business. The business is paid into its Naira account whether or not the shopper repays, because Pryme carries the credit. For the business it is free to join, there is nothing monthly, and the customer’s identity is never shown — only a reference and what it is worth.

What do the agents on a Pryme Business Account do?

Five agents come with the account. The Chief of Staff runs the week and keeps what is stuck moving. Finance watches the money and keeps the books as you trade. Compliance keeps the filings on time and screens what moves. Sales chases what you are owed. Customer Support answers your customers and follows up. Each has a job description, a budget and a ceiling you set, and each one proposes rather than acts — nothing leaves the account without your signature.

How does Pryme Pay work?

Pryme Pay takes payments on your own site or on a checkout page you control. The buyer is given a one-time account number and transfers to it from any bank app or by USSD — no card, no OTP, nothing to type in. The money lands in the same account your agents are running, already matched to the order and already in your books.

What are Savings Boxes?

Savings Boxes are separate pots inside a Pryme account, held in Naira. Flexible Boxes can be withdrawn at any time, Fixed Boxes hold to a date, Investment Boxes hold for longer, and Interest-free Boxes earn nothing by design. A business can use them to ring-fence payroll and the tax it withholds, so that money cannot be spent by accident.

Who holds my money, and is it protected?

Pryme is a financial technology company, not a bank. Accounts and deposits are provided by Solid Allianze Microfinance Bank Limited, which is licensed by the Central Bank of Nigeria and is a member of the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation.

Can I build on Pryme?

Yes. Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives you one account that holds US dollars, pounds sterling and euros beside Naira, with an assistant that runs the account for you and asks before anything moves. Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, and further markets open as each licence lands.

Can I open a Pryme account from outside Nigeria?

Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, subject to verification and approval. Foreign-currency balances are held and converted inside that account, so you can hold, receive and swap dollars, pounds and euros wherever you are.

Which currencies can I hold with Pryme?

Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros, side by side on one ledger. Each has its own details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area — and each has its own statement.

How do I send money to Nigeria with Pryme?

Swap at a rate you set rather than the rate of the day, then send to any Pryme username or to a Nigerian bank account. There is no fee to send to another Pryme account.

What does the assistant do?

Eva is the assistant inside the Pryme app. She opens accounts, moves money, saves toward your goals, pays what is due and follows up what is owed to you — and asks you before anything moves.

What is Pryme Rails?

Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

Agri-investment platforms for the diaspora: SEC rules

What the SEC Crowdfunding Rules require of farm-investment platforms, which portals are registered, and what failed agri schemes had in common.

The short answer

A platform that pools money from the public to fund farms is offering an investment, and since January 2021 the SEC's Crowdfunding Rules say only SEC-registered crowdfunding intermediaries may run such portals, with investor money held by a registered custodian. Before sending money from abroad, check the operator on the SEC's own registers and treat fixed, high returns over a few months as a warning sign.

Why farm-investment apps fall under the SEC

Many Nigerians abroad first meet agri-investment through an app or a WhatsApp group: you 'sponsor' a farm unit, wait through a growing cycle, and receive your capital plus a stated return. Whatever it is called, a scheme that takes money from many people and promises them a share of the profit from someone else's work is an investment offered to the public. In Nigeria that brings it under the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC).

When these platforms grew around 2016–2019 there was no specific rulebook. Operators interviewed by The Guardian in February 2020 said exactly that, and claimed the sector had raised about ₦20 billion, a figure that was not audited. The gap closed when the SEC released its Crowdfunding Rules on 12 January 2021, made under the Investments and Securities Act 2007. That Act was replaced by the Investments and Securities Act 2025; whether the Commission has since amended the crowdfunding rules is something to confirm on the SEC website before you rely on any single figure below.

What the Crowdfunding Rules require

The law firm Aelex summarised the 2021 rules. The parts that matter to a diaspora investor are these:

  • Only registered portals. A crowdfunding portal may be run only by an SEC-registered Crowdfunding Intermediary, which must sponsor at least three principal officers and hold a fidelity bond. Portals already operating had until 30 June 2021 to register.
  • Who may raise money. Issuers must be Nigerian-incorporated micro, small or medium businesses with a two-year track record (or a technical partner or core investor).
  • How much. In any 12 months a medium business may raise up to ₦100 million, a small one ₦70 million and a micro business ₦50 million.
  • What you can buy. Ordinary shares, plain bonds or debentures, and simple investment contracts approved by the SEC.
  • Where your money sits. A registered custodian holds each round's money in a separate trust account and releases it only if the target or minimum is met.
  • Limits on you. A retail investor's total crowdfunding investment in 12 months should not exceed 10% of net annual income. You sign a risk acknowledgement before investing, there is a one-year lock-in, and the intermediary does not offer secondary trading.
  • Offer length. An offer stays open for at most 90 days (60 days plus a 30-day extension).

The rules also cover commodity investment platforms, which may raise up to ₦1 billion in 12 months. That category is closest to the 'buy a share of a harvest' model many agri apps use.

Which platforms are registered

The SEC publishes a Registered FinTech Operators page. As published on 25 May 2025, it listed three crowdfunding intermediaries: Obelix 4.1.1 Alternative Ltd, PropCrowdy Ltd and Pennytree Business Ltd. None of the three is described there as a farm-only platform. That list is a snapshot, so also search the SEC's Find a Registered Operator directory, which shows each firm's function, account status and fidelity bond details. The SEC itself says some records may lag, so a missing name is a reason to ask questions, not proof of wrongdoing.

A platform may also say it is 'registered with CAC'. That only means the company exists. It is not permission to take investments from the public.

What failed schemes looked like

The SEC's Known Investment Scams page (14 August 2023) describes phantom schemes, Ponzi schemes and unlicensed platforms, and lists the warning signs: returns that sound unrealistic, no regulatory approvals, and operations no one can see. Its schedule of 38 illegal operators the Commission sealed up between 2013 and 2022 includes a farm-produce storage scheme, Ovaioza Farm Produce Storage Business in Abuja (2022). Even in 2020, an industry voice quoted by The Guardian said returns above 30% over a six-month moratorium looked unrealistic.

What you are toldWhat a rule-compliant offer looks like
Fixed return, paid whatever the harvestShares, bonds or an approved contract, with the risk set out in writing
Pay into the founder's or an agent's accountMoney held by a registered custodian in a trust account for that round
Withdraw any time, or roll over for a bonusOne-year lock-in, no secondary market on the portal
'Limited slots, pay today'Offer period of up to 90 days, with a minimum target
Registered with CACRegistered with the SEC as a Crowdfunding Intermediary

Under the Investments and Securities Act 2025, Ponzi and pyramid schemes are prohibited. Mondaq's review of the Act reports a penalty of not less than ₦20 million and/or imprisonment of up to 10 years for operators. That helps after the event. It does not return your money quickly.

Worked example: testing a farm offer

Example. A platform offers 30% in six months on a ₦1,000,000 'poultry unit'. That is ₦300,000 profit. Repeat it twice in a year and the simple yearly return is about 60%. For comparison, the 364-day Treasury bill stop rate at the 7 October 2026 auction was 15.85% (Nairametrics, as at October 2026). Farm risks include disease, prices and weather, so a farm promising almost four times the government's borrowing rate, with no stated risk, needs an explanation you can check.

Example. If your net annual income is the equivalent of ₦12,000,000, the 10% guide in the rules caps your crowdfunding investments at ₦1,200,000 over 12 months.

What to check first

  1. Find the exact company name on the SEC's registered operator directory or FinTech list.
  2. Ask which custodian holds investor money and get the trust account name in writing.
  3. Read the instrument: share, bond or investment contract. A WhatsApp message is not an offer document.
  4. Search the SEC's Known Investment Scams and enforcement pages for the name and its founders.
  5. Never pay into a personal account, and keep every receipt and message.

For more on spotting schemes, see our guide to Ponzi and investment scams in Nigeria, or compare regulated options in buying Nigerian mutual funds from abroad.

Where Pryme fits

Pryme does not offer or recommend farm investments. If you earn abroad, a Pryme account holds dollars, pounds and euros in the currency they arrived in (multicurrency), and you convert to naira only when you choose with Swap, after the platform you plan to use has passed the checks above.

Questions people ask

Are agric investment apps legal in Nigeria?

Raising money from the public for farms is allowed only through SEC-registered channels. Under the 2021 Crowdfunding Rules, portals must be run by SEC-registered Crowdfunding Intermediaries. Check the SEC's registered operator directory before investing.

How do I know if a farm investment platform is registered with SEC?

Search the company's exact name on the SEC's Find a Registered Operator directory and the Registered FinTech Operators page. CAC registration alone does not permit a firm to take investments.

Is 30% return in 6 months on farming realistic?

An industry voice quoted in 2020 called returns above 30% over six months unrealistic. As at October 2026 the 364-day Treasury bill stop rate was 15.85%, so a much higher promised return, with no stated risk, needs scrutiny.

Can I get my money back from a failed agric investment scheme?

Recovery is slow and not certain. Report to the SEC through its whistleblowing channel and keep all receipts. The ISA 2025 lets the SEC pursue Ponzi operators, but that does not promise a refund.
