Questions

The things people ask us first.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives people and businesses in Nigeria one account that holds Naira alongside dollars, pounds and euros, and a set of agents that do the running of it — keeping the books, chasing what is owed, answering customers and paying bills. Nothing leaves an account without the owner’s approval.

Can I hold dollars, pounds and euros in a Pryme account?

Yes. A Pryme account holds Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros side by side on one ledger, each with its own account details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area. You can swap between them at a rate you set, and every currency has its own statement.

What is Spaces?

Spaces is available in Nigeria. It gives a shopper money to spend that can only be spent with a participating business. The business is paid into its Naira account whether or not the shopper repays, because Pryme carries the credit. For the business it is free to join, there is nothing monthly, and the customer’s identity is never shown — only a reference and what it is worth.

What do the agents on a Pryme Business Account do?

Five agents come with the account. The Chief of Staff runs the week and keeps what is stuck moving. Finance watches the money and keeps the books as you trade. Compliance keeps the filings on time and screens what moves. Sales chases what you are owed. Customer Support answers your customers and follows up. Each has a job description, a budget and a ceiling you set, and each one proposes rather than acts — nothing leaves the account without your signature.

How does Pryme Pay work?

Pryme Pay takes payments on your own site or on a checkout page you control. The buyer is given a one-time account number and transfers to it from any bank app or by USSD — no card, no OTP, nothing to type in. The money lands in the same account your agents are running, already matched to the order and already in your books.

What are Savings Boxes?

Savings Boxes are separate pots inside a Pryme account, held in Naira. Flexible Boxes can be withdrawn at any time, Fixed Boxes hold to a date, Investment Boxes hold for longer, and Interest-free Boxes earn nothing by design. A business can use them to ring-fence payroll and the tax it withholds, so that money cannot be spent by accident.

Who holds my money, and is it protected?

Pryme is a financial technology company, not a bank. Accounts and deposits are provided by Solid Allianze Microfinance Bank Limited, which is licensed by the Central Bank of Nigeria and is a member of the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation.

Can I build on Pryme?

Yes. Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives you one account that holds US dollars, pounds sterling and euros beside Naira, with an assistant that runs the account for you and asks before anything moves. Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, and further markets open as each licence lands.

Can I open a Pryme account from outside Nigeria?

Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, subject to verification and approval. Foreign-currency balances are held and converted inside that account, so you can hold, receive and swap dollars, pounds and euros wherever you are.

Which currencies can I hold with Pryme?

Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros, side by side on one ledger. Each has its own details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area — and each has its own statement.

How do I send money to Nigeria with Pryme?

Swap at a rate you set rather than the rate of the day, then send to any Pryme username or to a Nigerian bank account. There is no fee to send to another Pryme account.

What does the assistant do?

Eva is the assistant inside the Pryme app. She opens accounts, moves money, saves toward your goals, pays what is due and follows up what is owed to you — and asks you before anything moves.

What is Pryme Rails?

Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

Selling imported Nigerian food in an SA shop: labelling rules

Nigerian packaged food often carries NAFDAC-compliant labels, but SA rules add the local importer's details and other items. What to check on each pack.

The short answer

Packaged food sold in South Africa must meet the labelling rules under the Foodstuffs, Cosmetics and Disinfectants Act, including the name and address of the manufacturer, packer, distributor or importer, an ingredient list, allergens, date marking and, for imports, the country of origin. Nigerian packs often meet similar NAFDAC rules, but you still need to check each product and usually add a sticker with your South African importer details.

African food shops in Johannesburg, Pretoria, Cape Town and Durban sell garri, elubo, egusi, ogbono, palm oil, noodles, seasoning cubes, malt drinks and snacks from Nigeria. The shop is responsible for what it sells, and the labelling rules apply to imported food as much as to local food. Labels are not registered with anyone in advance: the labeller is responsible for compliance, so if a pack is wrong, the problem is yours.

What South African labels must show

Food labelling in South Africa is set by regulations under the Foodstuffs, Cosmetics and Disinfectants Act (Act 54 of 1972), known as R146. A Food For Mzansi summary (May 2023) lists the main requirements:

  • the name and physical address of the manufacturer, packer, distributor or importer;
  • an ingredient list in descending order of weight;
  • a nutritional information table;
  • allergen warnings;
  • date marking (shelf life or expiry);
  • the country of origin, if imported;
  • claims that are truthful and accurate;
  • text in one of South Africa's official languages.

The same article noted that new labelling and advertising regulations were in draft. Check the current position with the Department of Health or an environmental health practitioner before you print new labels, because the draft would add requirements if adopted.

How Nigerian labels compare

Products made for the Nigerian market fall under NAFDAC's Pre-Packaged Food, Water and Ice (Labelling) Regulations 2019, which already require many of the same items. That helps, but there are usually gaps.

ItemNAFDAC 2019 rules (Nigeria)SA requirement (per Food For Mzansi)Usual gap

Problem products to watch

  • Loose staples bought in Nigerian markets (dried fish, crayfish, ogbono, egusi, locust beans) usually arrive with no label at all.
  • Palm oil and groundnut oil in reused bottles raise both labelling and food-contact questions.
  • Products with health claims such as herbal drinks or bitters may be treated as more than food.
  • Expired or short-dated stock, which a shop must not sell past its date.

A practical labelling routine

  1. For each product line, photograph the label and tick it against the SA list above.
  2. Prepare a sticker with your business name, physical address and, where missing, ingredients, allergens and country of origin.
  3. Do not cover the original manufacturer's details or the date.
  4. Keep supplier invoices so you can show where each batch came from.
  5. For goods you import yourself, see the border rules in importing Nigerian spices and importing Nigerian drinks.

Who checks, and what happens if a label is wrong

Food sold in shops is inspected locally, typically by environmental health practitioners working for the municipality, who can ask to see stock, labels and where the goods came from. Because labels are not approved in advance, a problem usually surfaces during an inspection or after a customer complaint. Food For Mzansi notes that non-compliant labelling can lead to legal action and penalties. In practice the first consequence is often that the stock has to be removed from the shelf until it is relabelled, which ties up cash and shelf space.

The safest habit is to treat each new product as a small project: before the first carton goes on the shelf, check the label, fix the gaps, and keep a record. A shop that stocks a hundred lines from Nigeria will find that most come from a handful of manufacturers, so one sticker template per manufacturer often covers many products.

Buying from SA wholesalers instead

Many shops buy Nigerian goods from South African importers and wholesalers rather than importing directly. That moves the import paperwork to the wholesaler, but not the labelling responsibility for what you sell. Ask your wholesaler whether its packs already carry SA importer details; if they do, your work is mostly checking dates.

For the business licence side of a shop, see opening a shop in Johannesburg as a foreigner.

Where Pryme fits

If you buy stock from Nigerian wholesalers, a Pryme Business Account opened from South Africa lets you pay them in naira; the app shows the rate and the fee before you approve. Outside Nigeria, Pryme's services are provided through regulated partners.

Questions people ask

Do I need to relabel Nigerian food to sell in South Africa?

Usually you add a sticker rather than relabel, covering your SA importer details and any missing items such as a nutrition table.

Is a NAFDAC number enough to sell food in South Africa?

No. NAFDAC registration applies in Nigeria. SA labelling rules under the Foodstuffs, Cosmetics and Disinfectants Act still apply.

Do labels have to be in English in South Africa?

They must be in one of South Africa's official languages, and English is one of them.

Can I sell garri by the cup from a sack?

If you pack it for sale, the pack needs proper labelling. Check the rules for loose food with your local environmental health office.
