Questions

The things people ask us first.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives people and businesses in Nigeria one account that holds Naira alongside dollars, pounds and euros, and a set of agents that do the running of it — keeping the books, chasing what is owed, answering customers and paying bills. Nothing leaves an account without the owner’s approval.

Can I hold dollars, pounds and euros in a Pryme account?

Yes. A Pryme account holds Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros side by side on one ledger, each with its own account details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area. You can swap between them at a rate you set, and every currency has its own statement.

What is Spaces?

Spaces is available in Nigeria. It gives a shopper money to spend that can only be spent with a participating business. The business is paid into its Naira account whether or not the shopper repays, because Pryme carries the credit. For the business it is free to join, there is nothing monthly, and the customer’s identity is never shown — only a reference and what it is worth.

What do the agents on a Pryme Business Account do?

Five agents come with the account. The Chief of Staff runs the week and keeps what is stuck moving. Finance watches the money and keeps the books as you trade. Compliance keeps the filings on time and screens what moves. Sales chases what you are owed. Customer Support answers your customers and follows up. Each has a job description, a budget and a ceiling you set, and each one proposes rather than acts — nothing leaves the account without your signature.

How does Pryme Pay work?

Pryme Pay takes payments on your own site or on a checkout page you control. The buyer is given a one-time account number and transfers to it from any bank app or by USSD — no card, no OTP, nothing to type in. The money lands in the same account your agents are running, already matched to the order and already in your books.

What are Savings Boxes?

Savings Boxes are separate pots inside a Pryme account, held in Naira. Flexible Boxes can be withdrawn at any time, Fixed Boxes hold to a date, Investment Boxes hold for longer, and Interest-free Boxes earn nothing by design. A business can use them to ring-fence payroll and the tax it withholds, so that money cannot be spent by accident.

Who holds my money, and is it protected?

Pryme is a financial technology company, not a bank. Accounts and deposits are provided by Solid Allianze Microfinance Bank Limited, which is licensed by the Central Bank of Nigeria and is a member of the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation.

Can I build on Pryme?

Yes. Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives you one account that holds US dollars, pounds sterling and euros beside Naira, with an assistant that runs the account for you and asks before anything moves. Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, and further markets open as each licence lands.

Can I open a Pryme account from outside Nigeria?

Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, subject to verification and approval. Foreign-currency balances are held and converted inside that account, so you can hold, receive and swap dollars, pounds and euros wherever you are.

Which currencies can I hold with Pryme?

Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros, side by side on one ledger. Each has its own details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area — and each has its own statement.

How do I send money to Nigeria with Pryme?

Swap at a rate you set rather than the rate of the day, then send to any Pryme username or to a Nigerian bank account. There is no fee to send to another Pryme account.

What does the assistant do?

Eva is the assistant inside the Pryme app. She opens accounts, moves money, saves toward your goals, pays what is due and follows up what is owed to you — and asks you before anything moves.

What is Pryme Rails?

Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

Bills

AEDC estimated bill: the monthly cap for unmetered homes

NERC caps estimated bills for unmetered AEDC homes at the average use of metered neighbours on your feeder. How the cap works and how to check your bill.

The short answer

NERC's order on capping estimated bills limits what AEDC can charge an unmetered residential (R2) or small commercial (C1) customer to the average consumption of metered customers on the same feeder, with energy caps NERC publishes monthly. There is no single naira figure: your maximum is your feeder's monthly kWh cap multiplied by your band's tariff. NERC has penalised AEDC for breaching the caps.

How the cap works

NERC's capping order dates from February 2020 (ICIR's May 2025 report cites it with two slightly different February dates). Its aim is to stop unmetered customers being charged more than metered customers with similar use on the same feeder. In outline:

  • It applies to unmetered customers in tariff classes R2 (residential) and C1 (small commercial).
  • For each feeder, the cap is based on the average consumption of metered customers on that feeder.
  • NERC publishes the energy caps monthly, so the figure for your feeder can change from month to month.
  • Your bill should not exceed the cap in kWh multiplied by the tariff for your band.

Because the cap is set feeder by feeder and month by month, anyone quoting one naira figure for "the AEDC estimated bill cap" is oversimplifying. You need your feeder name and the cap for the billing month.

Are you covered by the cap?

The cap is for customers with no working meter who are billed on estimates. Check where you stand:

Unmetered residential (R2)
Covered. Your bill should not exceed the feeder cap times your band's tariff.
Unmetered small business (C1)
Covered on the same basis as residential.
Prepaid meter
Not affected. You pay for units you buy.
Postpaid meter that is read
Billed on readings, not estimates. If readings are not being taken, ask AEDC why and request a reading.
Faulty meter
Report it in writing. While it is faulty you may be billed on an estimate, and the cap logic is a fair benchmark to raise.

Signs a bill may be over the cap

  • The kWh figure on the bill is the same every month regardless of the season or how often supply was off.
  • The bill is much higher than a metered neighbour's on the same feeder with similar use.
  • The bill continued during a period when supply to your area was off for long stretches.
  • The band on the bill is Band A but your feeder does not appear in NERC's Band A lists.

Work out your own maximum: a worked example

Example only. Suppose NERC's published cap for your feeder for the month is 120 kWh, and your feeder is Band B. NERC's July 2025 AEDC order sets the Band B non-MD tariff at ₦63.35 per kWh.

StepCalculationResult
Monthly cap (example)From NERC's published caps for your feeder120 kWh
TariffBand B non-MD, July 2025 AEDC order₦63.35 per kWh
Maximum energy charge120 × ₦63.35₦7,602
If your bill shows 200 kWh200 × ₦63.35₦12,670
Excess over the cap₦12,670 − ₦7,602₦5,068

If your feeder were Band A at ₦209.50, the same 120 kWh cap would give a maximum of ₦25,140 before VAT. VAT and any fixed items on the bill sit on top; compare the energy line with the cap.

What AEDC has been penalised for

  • NERC's July 2025 Supplementary Order for AEDC records that, under Order NERC/2024/004 on non-compliance with the capping of estimated bills, NERC approved a deduction of ₦1.69 billion from AEDC's annual operating expenditure, effective September 2024. That equals 10% of the amount AEDC overbilled between January and September 2023.
  • ICIR reported that on 10 April 2025 NERC sanctioned eight DisCos, Abuja among them, for overbilling unmetered customers in breach of the energy caps for July to September 2024.

These actions show the caps are enforced at company level. For an individual customer, the remedy is to dispute your own bill.

Steps to check and dispute your bill

  1. Find your feeder name from your bill or from AEDC; see how to check your AEDC feeder.
  2. Get NERC's published energy cap for that feeder and month from NERC's website.
  3. Multiply the cap by your band's tariff from the current AEDC order to find your maximum energy charge.
  4. If your bill is higher, email AEDC with the bill, the cap and your calculation, and ask for a corrected bill. See AEDC customer care channels.
  5. If AEDC does not correct it, take the complaint to the NERC Forum office, listed by LawPadi at No. 14, Road 131, Gwarinpa, Abuja.

The longer-term fix: get metered

The cap protects you from the worst estimates, but you still pay for an average, not for what you use. A household that uses little power can end up paying the same as a heavier neighbour. Getting a meter ends estimated billing for that account. NERC deregulated meter prices under the Meter Asset Provider scheme from 1 May 2024 (Order NERC/2024/040), so the price is now set by the meter providers; see AEDC meter prices and getting a meter under MAP.

Where Pryme fits

If you pay an estimated bill each month, a record of what you paid and when makes a dispute easier. Payments through electricity in the Pryme app sit in your history, and VerifyDoc.ai lets you generate a verifiable statement (receipts).

Questions people ask

What is the maximum estimated bill AEDC can charge?

It depends on your feeder. NERC caps unmetered R2 and C1 bills at the average consumption of metered customers on the same feeder, published monthly. Multiply that kWh cap by your band's tariff.

Where can I see NERC energy cap for my feeder?

NERC publishes the monthly energy caps on its website. You need your feeder name from your bill or from AEDC.

Was AEDC fined for estimated billing?

Yes. NERC's July 2025 AEDC order records a ₦1.69 billion deduction under Order NERC/2024/004, equal to 10% of the amount overbilled from January to September 2023.

How do I stop estimated billing from AEDC?

Get a meter. Until then, check each bill against your feeder's cap and dispute anything above it in writing.
