Questions

The things people ask us first.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives people and businesses in Nigeria one account that holds Naira alongside dollars, pounds and euros, and a set of agents that do the running of it — keeping the books, chasing what is owed, answering customers and paying bills. Nothing leaves an account without the owner’s approval.

Can I hold dollars, pounds and euros in a Pryme account?

Yes. A Pryme account holds Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros side by side on one ledger, each with its own account details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area. You can swap between them at a rate you set, and every currency has its own statement.

What is Spaces?

Spaces is available in Nigeria. It gives a shopper money to spend that can only be spent with a participating business. The business is paid into its Naira account whether or not the shopper repays, because Pryme carries the credit. For the business it is free to join, there is nothing monthly, and the customer’s identity is never shown — only a reference and what it is worth.

What do the agents on a Pryme Business Account do?

Five agents come with the account. The Chief of Staff runs the week and keeps what is stuck moving. Finance watches the money and keeps the books as you trade. Compliance keeps the filings on time and screens what moves. Sales chases what you are owed. Customer Support answers your customers and follows up. Each has a job description, a budget and a ceiling you set, and each one proposes rather than acts — nothing leaves the account without your signature.

How does Pryme Pay work?

Pryme Pay takes payments on your own site or on a checkout page you control. The buyer is given a one-time account number and transfers to it from any bank app or by USSD — no card, no OTP, nothing to type in. The money lands in the same account your agents are running, already matched to the order and already in your books.

What are Savings Boxes?

Savings Boxes are separate pots inside a Pryme account, held in Naira. Flexible Boxes can be withdrawn at any time, Fixed Boxes hold to a date, Investment Boxes hold for longer, and Interest-free Boxes earn nothing by design. A business can use them to ring-fence payroll and the tax it withholds, so that money cannot be spent by accident.

Who holds my money, and is it protected?

Pryme is a financial technology company, not a bank. Accounts and deposits are provided by Solid Allianze Microfinance Bank Limited, which is licensed by the Central Bank of Nigeria and is a member of the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation.

Can I build on Pryme?

Yes. Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives you one account that holds US dollars, pounds sterling and euros beside Naira, with an assistant that runs the account for you and asks before anything moves. Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, and further markets open as each licence lands.

Can I open a Pryme account from outside Nigeria?

Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, subject to verification and approval. Foreign-currency balances are held and converted inside that account, so you can hold, receive and swap dollars, pounds and euros wherever you are.

Which currencies can I hold with Pryme?

Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros, side by side on one ledger. Each has its own details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area — and each has its own statement.

How do I send money to Nigeria with Pryme?

Swap at a rate you set rather than the rate of the day, then send to any Pryme username or to a Nigerian bank account. There is no fee to send to another Pryme account.

What does the assistant do?

Eva is the assistant inside the Pryme app. She opens accounts, moves money, saves toward your goals, pays what is due and follows up what is owed to you — and asks you before anything moves.

What is Pryme Rails?

Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

Account maintenance fee (CAMF): how it is calculated

CAMF is charged per mille on customer-induced debits from current accounts, not savings accounts. How to work it out, what is exempt, what may change.

The short answer

The current account maintenance fee (CAMF) is a charge on current accounts worked out per mille (per ₦1,000) of customer-induced debits to third parties, and transfers to your own account at another bank, in a month. Under the CBN's rules as described by Nairametrics, it is negotiable but capped at ₦1 per ₦1,000 and does not apply to savings accounts. A CBN draft published in April 2026 proposes cutting the cap to ₦0.50 per mille in 2026 and abolishing CAMF in 2027, but that draft had no stated effective date when we checked.

CAMF is the line on a current account statement that puzzles many people because it moves every month. It is not a flat fee. It is worked out from how much money you sent out of the account, and only some of those payments count. Here is the rule, how to check the figure, and what is in the pipeline.

The rule

What it applies to
Current accounts. Nairametrics' summary of the CBN Guide to Charges says CAMF "is not applicable to a savings account".
What counts
Customer-induced debit transactions to third parties, and debit transfers or lodgements to your own account in another bank.
The cap
Negotiable, subject to a maximum of ₦1 per mille, meaning ₦1 for every ₦1,000 of qualifying debits.
What does not count
Debits the bank itself initiates (its own charges, for example) are not customer-induced.

The Guide to Charges that sets this out is the CBN's document effective 1 January 2020, which applies to all CBN-licensed financial institutions. Our summary of the CBN Guide to Charges lists its other caps.

How to calculate it

Add up the qualifying debits for the month, divide by 1,000, and multiply by the bank's CAMF rate (no more than ₦1). Banks may add VAT on the charge; UBA's tariff, for example, shows 7.5% VAT added to its fees.

Worked example

Example only. A trader's current account shows these debits in March:

DebitAmountCounts for CAMF?
Transfers to suppliers₦1,800,000Yes: customer-induced, to third parties
Transfer to her own account at another bank₦400,000Yes: lodgement to own account in another bank
Bank charges and SMS alert fees₦3,500No: bank-induced
Total qualifying debits₦2,200,000
  1. Qualifying debits ÷ 1,000: ₦2,200,000 ÷ 1,000 = 2,200.
  2. At the ₦1 per mille cap: 2,200 × ₦1 = ₦2,200.
  3. If VAT at 7.5% is added: ₦2,200 × 7.5% = ₦165, so ₦2,365 in total.
  4. At the ₦0.50 per mille proposed in the 2026 draft: 2,200 × ₦0.50 = ₦1,100, or ₦1,182.50 with 7.5% VAT.

If your statement shows more than the cap allows on your qualifying debits, ask the bank for its calculation.

Reading your statement

Banks usually post CAMF once a month, often at month-end or early in the following month, as a single line. It may be labelled "CAMF", "current account maintenance fee" or simply "maintenance charge". It is easy to mix up with other charges, so check the description:

  • CAMF moves with your qualifying debits.
  • Card maintenance fees are a fixed amount linked to your debit card, not your transfers.
  • SMS alert charges are per message, often bundled monthly.
  • Stamp duty is a tax on certain incoming payments, not on what you send.

To check CAMF, download the month's statement, total the transfers you made to other people and to your accounts elsewhere, and apply the calculation above. If your bank applies a rate below ₦1, its tariff guide should say so.

Who pays less, or nothing

  • Savings account holders. CAMF does not apply to savings accounts.
  • Customers on accounts that waive it. Some banks set CAMF below the cap or waive it. GTBank's GT Business Account page, for example, says zero CAMF for monthly turnover below ₦400 million and ₦1 per mille above.
  • Customers who negotiate. The rule says the fee is negotiable. Businesses with large turnover sometimes agree a lower rate.

What may change

In April 2026, the CBN published an exposure draft of a new Guide to Charges for comment, with comments due by 8 May 2026. As reported by TechCabal and summarised by law firm Candide-Johnson, it proposes a maximum CAMF of ₦0.50 per mille in 2026 and abolishing CAMF from 2027. The draft did not state an effective date. Until the CBN issues a final guide, the 2020 rule applies, and your bank's tariff is what you are charged.

What to check first

  • Whether your account is a current or a savings account. If you do not need cheques or a current account, a savings account avoids CAMF.
  • Your bank's published CAMF rate, which may be below ₦1 per mille.
  • Whether transfers between your own accounts at the same bank are being counted.
  • If you think you were overcharged, raise it with the bank and then the CBN: see how to complain about a bank.

CAMF is separate from stamp duty, which is a tax on certain receipts. For that, see stamp duty rates in Nigeria.

Questions people ask

How is CAMF calculated in Nigeria?

Add your customer-induced debits to third parties (and transfers to your own account at another bank) for the month, divide by 1,000 and multiply by the bank's rate, capped at ₦1 per mille under the 2020 rules. VAT may be added.

Do savings accounts pay CAMF?

No. CAMF applies to current accounts, not savings accounts.

Is CAMF being abolished?

A CBN draft Guide to Charges published in April 2026 proposes ₦0.50 per mille in 2026 and abolition in 2027. It had no stated effective date when we checked, so the 2020 rule still applies.

Why was I charged maintenance fee on my account?

If it is a current account, CAMF is charged on qualifying debits. Ask your bank for the calculation if the amount looks wrong, and check whether it is CAMF or a card maintenance fee.
