Questions

The things people ask us first.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives people and businesses in Nigeria one account that holds Naira alongside dollars, pounds and euros, and a set of agents that do the running of it — keeping the books, chasing what is owed, answering customers and paying bills. Nothing leaves an account without the owner’s approval.

Can I hold dollars, pounds and euros in a Pryme account?

Yes. A Pryme account holds Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros side by side on one ledger, each with its own account details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area. You can swap between them at a rate you set, and every currency has its own statement.

What is Spaces?

Spaces is available in Nigeria. It gives a shopper money to spend that can only be spent with a participating business. The business is paid into its Naira account whether or not the shopper repays, because Pryme carries the credit. For the business it is free to join, there is nothing monthly, and the customer’s identity is never shown — only a reference and what it is worth.

What do the agents on a Pryme Business Account do?

Five agents come with the account. The Chief of Staff runs the week and keeps what is stuck moving. Finance watches the money and keeps the books as you trade. Compliance keeps the filings on time and screens what moves. Sales chases what you are owed. Customer Support answers your customers and follows up. Each has a job description, a budget and a ceiling you set, and each one proposes rather than acts — nothing leaves the account without your signature.

How does Pryme Pay work?

Pryme Pay takes payments on your own site or on a checkout page you control. The buyer is given a one-time account number and transfers to it from any bank app or by USSD — no card, no OTP, nothing to type in. The money lands in the same account your agents are running, already matched to the order and already in your books.

What are Savings Boxes?

Savings Boxes are separate pots inside a Pryme account, held in Naira. Flexible Boxes can be withdrawn at any time, Fixed Boxes hold to a date, Investment Boxes hold for longer, and Interest-free Boxes earn nothing by design. A business can use them to ring-fence payroll and the tax it withholds, so that money cannot be spent by accident.

Who holds my money, and is it protected?

Pryme is a financial technology company, not a bank. Accounts and deposits are provided by Solid Allianze Microfinance Bank Limited, which is licensed by the Central Bank of Nigeria and is a member of the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation.

Can I build on Pryme?

Yes. Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives you one account that holds US dollars, pounds sterling and euros beside Naira, with an assistant that runs the account for you and asks before anything moves. Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, and further markets open as each licence lands.

Can I open a Pryme account from outside Nigeria?

Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, subject to verification and approval. Foreign-currency balances are held and converted inside that account, so you can hold, receive and swap dollars, pounds and euros wherever you are.

Which currencies can I hold with Pryme?

Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros, side by side on one ledger. Each has its own details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area — and each has its own statement.

How do I send money to Nigeria with Pryme?

Swap at a rate you set rather than the rate of the day, then send to any Pryme username or to a Nigerian bank account. There is no fee to send to another Pryme account.

What does the assistant do?

Eva is the assistant inside the Pryme app. She opens accounts, moves money, saves toward your goals, pays what is due and follows up what is owed to you — and asks you before anything moves.

What is Pryme Rails?

Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

Banking how-tos

Old Diamond Bank account: how it works on Access Bank now

Diamond Bank merged into Access Bank, launched as one bank in April 2019. What Access said would stay the same for your account, and what to check now.

The short answer

Access Bank's merger FAQs said Diamond Bank customers' account numbers and relationship managers would not change, and the combined Access Bank launched publicly on 1 April 2019. Your old Diamond account number should still work as an Access Bank account; for cards, USSD codes and cheque books issued under Diamond, confirm the current position with Access Bank.

Plenty of Nigerians still have an account that was opened with Diamond Bank. Some have not used it for years, others use it every day without thinking about which bank's logo is on the debit card. The question usually comes up when a sender asks which bank to choose, an old card stops working, or a family member finds a Diamond cheque book in a drawer. Here is what Access Bank said would happen, what it did not address, and how to get a legacy account working properly today.

What Access Bank said would stay the same

Access Bank published a set of merger FAQs for Diamond Bank customers. Their main commitments were these:

Account numbers
Access said account numbers and relationship managers would not change, and that it was working "to the point of not changing anyone's bank account number".
Deposits
Diamond customers were being taken on in full; the FAQ says "Your money is safe."
Branches
No changes to the branch network were expected in the near future, with new branding rolled out across branches in phases.
Channels
Products could be reached through your existing branch or your mobile and digital channels.
Launch
The new Access Bank was launched publicly on 1 April 2019.

So for most purposes a former Diamond account is simply an Access Bank account with the same ten-digit number. When someone sends you money, they should choose Access Bank as the destination bank. Ask them to check that your name appears on the screen before they confirm.

What the FAQs did not cover

The merger FAQs say nothing specific about cards, USSD codes, cheque books, loans or BVN. Those are the areas where legacy customers most often run into trouble, so treat each as something to confirm rather than assume.

Cards

If you still hold a Diamond-branded debit card and it is declined, do not keep retrying it at ATMs. Ask Access Bank whether the card is still valid and request a replacement if not; the current issuance fee is on the bank's fee schedule or will be stated at the branch. Our guide to Access Bank card fees covers the charges.

USSD

Access Bank's own product pages today give USSD strings on its *901# code, for example *901*11# for its PayDay loan. If you used a Diamond-era code, check the current list in our guide to every Access Bank *901# function and register on *901# with the phone number linked to your account.

App and internet banking

Access Bank's pages refer to its mobile app as AccessMore, and some pages still say Access Mobile. A legacy customer who never moved to the Access app will usually need to download it and register using the account number, the card or the details on file. If the phone number on the account is old, that has to be updated first, normally at a branch; see changing your phone number on Access Bank.

Cheque books

Do not issue cheques from an old Diamond cheque book without asking Access Bank whether they will still be honoured. Request a new Access Bank cheque book if needed.

BVN

Your BVN is an industry-wide identity number run through NIBSS, not a Diamond or Access number, so the merger does not change it. If your account was opened before your NIN was recorded, see linking BVN and NIN to Access Bank.

If the account has gone quiet

An account that has not been used for a long time may be classified as dormant or inactive, and some services stop until it is reactivated. The fix normally involves identification and a visit or a request to the bank; our guide to reactivating a dormant Access Bank account walks through it. Deposits in CBN-licensed banks are insured by the NDIC without registration or a fee, up to the applicable limit; see NDIC insurance limits.

Steps to bring a legacy account up to date

  1. Find your account number on an old statement, cheque book, debit alert or card letter.
  2. Call Access Bank on a number from its website and confirm the account is active and in your name.
  3. Update your phone number and email if they have changed, so alerts and OTPs reach you.
  4. Ask whether your Diamond-era card is still valid; request a replacement if not.
  5. Register on *901# and the Access app with your current phone number.
  6. Check that your BVN and NIN are recorded on the account.

Access Bank's 2019 FAQs also said relationship managers at either the former Diamond Bank or Access Bank could help. If you had one, that is a good first call.

Where Pryme fits

If you are tidying old accounts, it can make sense to keep one for naira and dollars together. A Pryme account holds NGN, USD, GBP and EUR with local account details for each; Naira deposits are held by Solid Allianze MFB. See multicurrency accounts.

Questions people ask

Does my Diamond Bank account number still work?

Access Bank's merger FAQs said account numbers would not change. Senders should choose Access Bank and check that your name appears before confirming.

Which bank should I choose for a Diamond Bank account transfer?

Choose Access Bank. The combined bank launched publicly on 1 April 2019, and legacy Diamond account numbers were kept.

Can I still use my old Diamond Bank ATM card?

The merger FAQs did not cover cards. Ask Access Bank whether your card is still valid before relying on it, and request a replacement if it is declined.

What is the USSD code for an old Diamond Bank account?

Access Bank's current pages give USSD strings on *901#. Register on *901# with the phone number linked to your account.
