Questions

The things people ask us first.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives people and businesses in Nigeria one account that holds Naira alongside dollars, pounds and euros, and a set of agents that do the running of it — keeping the books, chasing what is owed, answering customers and paying bills. Nothing leaves an account without the owner’s approval.

Can I hold dollars, pounds and euros in a Pryme account?

Yes. A Pryme account holds Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros side by side on one ledger, each with its own account details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area. You can swap between them at a rate you set, and every currency has its own statement.

What is Spaces?

Spaces is available in Nigeria. It gives a shopper money to spend that can only be spent with a participating business. The business is paid into its Naira account whether or not the shopper repays, because Pryme carries the credit. For the business it is free to join, there is nothing monthly, and the customer’s identity is never shown — only a reference and what it is worth.

What do the agents on a Pryme Business Account do?

Five agents come with the account. The Chief of Staff runs the week and keeps what is stuck moving. Finance watches the money and keeps the books as you trade. Compliance keeps the filings on time and screens what moves. Sales chases what you are owed. Customer Support answers your customers and follows up. Each has a job description, a budget and a ceiling you set, and each one proposes rather than acts — nothing leaves the account without your signature.

How does Pryme Pay work?

Pryme Pay takes payments on your own site or on a checkout page you control. The buyer is given a one-time account number and transfers to it from any bank app or by USSD — no card, no OTP, nothing to type in. The money lands in the same account your agents are running, already matched to the order and already in your books.

What are Savings Boxes?

Savings Boxes are separate pots inside a Pryme account, held in Naira. Flexible Boxes can be withdrawn at any time, Fixed Boxes hold to a date, Investment Boxes hold for longer, and Interest-free Boxes earn nothing by design. A business can use them to ring-fence payroll and the tax it withholds, so that money cannot be spent by accident.

Who holds my money, and is it protected?

Pryme is a financial technology company, not a bank. Accounts and deposits are provided by Solid Allianze Microfinance Bank Limited, which is licensed by the Central Bank of Nigeria and is a member of the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation.

Can I build on Pryme?

Yes. Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives you one account that holds US dollars, pounds sterling and euros beside Naira, with an assistant that runs the account for you and asks before anything moves. Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, and further markets open as each licence lands.

Can I open a Pryme account from outside Nigeria?

Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, subject to verification and approval. Foreign-currency balances are held and converted inside that account, so you can hold, receive and swap dollars, pounds and euros wherever you are.

Which currencies can I hold with Pryme?

Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros, side by side on one ledger. Each has its own details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area — and each has its own statement.

How do I send money to Nigeria with Pryme?

Swap at a rate you set rather than the rate of the day, then send to any Pryme username or to a Nigerian bank account. There is no fee to send to another Pryme account.

What does the assistant do?

Eva is the assistant inside the Pryme app. She opens accounts, moves money, saves toward your goals, pays what is due and follows up what is owed to you — and asks you before anything moves.

What is Pryme Rails?

Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

AI agents

When not to automate customer support with AI

Some support conversations should never be left to an AI agent. A practical test for what to keep human, with examples across business types.

The short answer

Do not automate support conversations where the answer is a judgement rather than a lookup, where a mistake would cause serious harm or legal exposure, where the customer is distressed or vulnerable, or where the relationship is worth more than the time saved. Those cases still benefit from an agent that gathers the facts and hands them to a person quickly.

Most writing about AI support focuses on what to automate. The harder decision is the reverse: which conversations should never be answered by an agent, however capable it seems. Getting this wrong is how businesses end up in the news, in front of a tribunal, or quietly losing customers who felt brushed off. This guide offers a test and a list.

A four-question test

For any type of support conversation, ask:

  1. Is the answer in a record or written policy? If the agent would have to decide rather than find, a person should decide.
  2. What does a wrong answer cost? If it could hurt someone, cost a lot of money or create a legal commitment, keep a person in the loop.
  3. How is the customer feeling? Grief, fear, anger and financial stress call for a person, even when the question itself is simple.
  4. What is the relationship worth? A key account or a long-standing customer may warrant a person even for a routine question.

A conversation that passes all four is a good candidate for full automation. One that fails any of them can still use an agent, but only to prepare the case for a person.

Illustrative example. A furniture retailer applies the test to "my sofa delivery is late". The answer is in the dispatch record, a wrong answer costs little, most customers are mildly annoyed rather than distressed, and the order value is ordinary: automate. It then applies the test to "the sofa arrived damaged and I have guests this weekend". The facts are in the record, but the remedy is a judgement, the cost of getting it wrong is a lost customer and a public review, and the customer is under pressure: the agent gathers photos and order details, promises a reply within two hours, and a person decides.

Conversations to keep with a person

TypeWhyExample
Safety and healthA wrong answer can cause harmAllergy questions, gas leaks, symptoms
SafeguardingDuties to protect children and vulnerable adultsA message suggesting someone is at risk
Bereavement and serious illnessNeeds empathy and discretionClosing a deceased customer's account

Financial hardshipRequires care and options, not repetitionA customer who cannot pay

Why agents fail at these cases

AI agents are good at finding and explaining. They are weaker where the right answer depends on context they cannot see, on reading emotion accurately, or on weighing competing interests. They can also produce fluent answers that are wrong, and they tend to sound equally confident either way. In ordinary questions, a source check catches most of this. In the cases above, a wrong answer may not be recoverable.

Tone is a quieter failure. An agent that apologises in the same words to a customer whose parcel is a day late and to one whose relative has died will be read, fairly, as not listening. Template empathy does more harm in serious cases than plain acknowledgement followed by a person.

There is also a liability point. Tribunals have held businesses responsible for what their chatbots say; in Moffatt v. Air Canada (2024), the airline had to honour a bereavement-fare answer its chatbot gave. The US Consumer Financial Protection Bureau has warned that chatbots in financial services can fail to recognise when a customer is raising a dispute or invoking their rights. Under UK GDPR, decisions based solely on automated processing with significant effects carry extra safeguards. Each of these points towards keeping contested decisions with a person.

What the agent still does in those cases

Not automating the decision does not mean the agent has no role. In each of the cases above, it can:

  • Acknowledge the customer quickly and tell them a named person will respond, and roughly when.
  • Gather the facts: the order, account history, previous messages, photos and the relevant policy clauses.
  • Route the case to the right person, out of hours if needed.
  • Stop routine flows, such as payment reminders or marketing, while the case is open.
  • Record everything on the audit trail.

Handled this way, a person takes over with the full picture and the customer does not have to repeat themselves. That is often the biggest improvement a business sees from an agent, even in cases it never answers.

Signs you have automated too far

  • Customers write "can I speak to a human" in a growing share of conversations.
  • Repeat contacts on the same issue rise.
  • Complaints mention being "stuck in a loop".
  • Escalated cases arrive without the history attached.
  • Refund or credit decisions are being made that nobody can explain.

If you see these, narrow the agent's scope before widening it again. For examples by sector, see our guides on clinics and restaurants.

Where Pryme fits

The Customer Support agent in a Pryme Business account is built around this line. It answers only when an answer clears its evidence floor, cannot grant exceptions or move money, and hands everything else to a named person with the history and evidence pack attached. The Chief of Staff makes sure those cases reach the right person rather than waiting in a queue. The agents are certified on Pryme Intelligence before they work on a business. For what the record of a handover should contain, see audit trails for AI agents.

Questions people ask

What support tasks should never be automated?

Safety, safeguarding, bereavement, exceptions to policy, legal threats, money disputes, hardship, fraud and key-account issues. An agent can still prepare these for a person.

Is it risky to let an AI agent refuse refunds?

Yes. A refusal can be contested and may engage consumer and data protection rules. Keep refusals outside clear policy with a person.

How do I know if I have automated too much?

Watch for rising requests to speak to a person, repeat contacts and complaints about loops. Narrow the agent's scope if they appear.

Can customers always reach a person?

They should be able to. Make the route clear and test it regularly, including out of hours.
