Questions

The things people ask us first.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives people and businesses in Nigeria one account that holds Naira alongside dollars, pounds and euros, and a set of agents that do the running of it — keeping the books, chasing what is owed, answering customers and paying bills. Nothing leaves an account without the owner’s approval.

Can I hold dollars, pounds and euros in a Pryme account?

Yes. A Pryme account holds Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros side by side on one ledger, each with its own account details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area. You can swap between them at a rate you set, and every currency has its own statement.

What is Spaces?

Spaces is available in Nigeria. It gives a shopper money to spend that can only be spent with a participating business. The business is paid into its Naira account whether or not the shopper repays, because Pryme carries the credit. For the business it is free to join, there is nothing monthly, and the customer’s identity is never shown — only a reference and what it is worth.

What do the agents on a Pryme Business Account do?

Five agents come with the account. The Chief of Staff runs the week and keeps what is stuck moving. Finance watches the money and keeps the books as you trade. Compliance keeps the filings on time and screens what moves. Sales chases what you are owed. Customer Support answers your customers and follows up. Each has a job description, a budget and a ceiling you set, and each one proposes rather than acts — nothing leaves the account without your signature.

How does Pryme Pay work?

Pryme Pay takes payments on your own site or on a checkout page you control. The buyer is given a one-time account number and transfers to it from any bank app or by USSD — no card, no OTP, nothing to type in. The money lands in the same account your agents are running, already matched to the order and already in your books.

What are Savings Boxes?

Savings Boxes are separate pots inside a Pryme account, held in Naira. Flexible Boxes can be withdrawn at any time, Fixed Boxes hold to a date, Investment Boxes hold for longer, and Interest-free Boxes earn nothing by design. A business can use them to ring-fence payroll and the tax it withholds, so that money cannot be spent by accident.

Who holds my money, and is it protected?

Pryme is a financial technology company, not a bank. Accounts and deposits are provided by Solid Allianze Microfinance Bank Limited, which is licensed by the Central Bank of Nigeria and is a member of the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation.

Can I build on Pryme?

Yes. Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives you one account that holds US dollars, pounds sterling and euros beside Naira, with an assistant that runs the account for you and asks before anything moves. Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, and further markets open as each licence lands.

Can I open a Pryme account from outside Nigeria?

Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, subject to verification and approval. Foreign-currency balances are held and converted inside that account, so you can hold, receive and swap dollars, pounds and euros wherever you are.

Which currencies can I hold with Pryme?

Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros, side by side on one ledger. Each has its own details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area — and each has its own statement.

How do I send money to Nigeria with Pryme?

Swap at a rate you set rather than the rate of the day, then send to any Pryme username or to a Nigerian bank account. There is no fee to send to another Pryme account.

What does the assistant do?

Eva is the assistant inside the Pryme app. She opens accounts, moves money, saves toward your goals, pays what is due and follows up what is owed to you — and asks you before anything moves.

What is Pryme Rails?

Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

What moves the naira day to day

Why did the naira move today? The daily drivers are dollar inflows, oil earnings, CBN sales and seasonal demand. Here is how each one works.

The short answer

The naira moves each day because the balance between dollars offered and dollars wanted in the official market changes. The main drivers are oil and other export earnings, foreign investors buying or selling Nigerian assets, remittances, CBN sales, and seasonal demand such as school fees and year-end imports.

The market behind the daily rate

The official rate is set by trades between authorised dealers (banks) in the Nigerian Foreign Exchange Market. Since the CBN moved to what it called a "willing buyer, willing seller" approach in October 2023, the rate is meant to reflect supply and demand rather than a fixed figure (Nairametrics, 12 Oct 2023). Our explainer on how the NFEM rate is set covers the mechanics.

On any given day, the closing rate reflects that day's flows. Nairametrics, using CBN data, reported $1.01 billion traded in the market on 7 October 2026 (8 Oct 2026). A large seller or buyer can move a day's rate more than the long-run trend would suggest.

The five daily drivers

1. Oil and export earnings

Crude oil is still the largest single source of dollars. When export receipts are repatriated and sold, supply rises. Nigeria's goods account showed a $10.12 billion surplus in Q2 2026, according to CBN provisional data reported by Nairametrics (18 Sep 2026).

2. Foreign portfolio investors

Foreign investors buying Nigerian treasury bills, bonds and shares bring dollars in; when they leave, they take dollars out. These flows are large and fast. CBN figures put portfolio investment inflows at $7.09 billion in Q2 2026. Interest rate decisions matter here: a cut can make naira assets less attractive at the margin.

3. Remittances

Personal transfers from Nigerians abroad reached $5.82 billion in Q2 2026. Since 1 May 2026, licensed money transfer operators must pay these inbound transfers in naira, and the dollars settle through authorised dealer banks, priced against Bloomberg's BMatch reference (Udo Udoma & Belo-Osagie, Mar 2026). That routes more of these dollars into the official market. See CBN remittance rules.

4. CBN sales and purchases

The CBN can sell dollars to banks when it judges the market disorderly, and buy when inflows are strong. Its October 2023 statement said it would intervene "from time to time" and less as liquidity improved. A reported CBN sale usually eases pressure that day.

5. Demand seasons

  • School fees: payments cluster before each semester. Under the CBN FX Manual (4th edition, effective 1 June 2026), tuition can be paid at up to $25,000 per semester through banks (Nairametrics, 4 Jun 2026).
  • Travel and summer: personal travel allowances rise in holiday months.
  • Importers' cycles: traders stock up ahead of festive seasons, so demand from importers often builds in the last quarter.
  • Dividend and profit repatriation by foreign companies, often after results season.

Why the rate you get differs from the headline

The headline is a wholesale rate between banks. The rate you are offered includes the provider's margin, and cash rates on the street can sit above or below. Our guide on hidden FX margins shows how to compare.

What to watch if you need to convert

  1. Check the CBN's published rate and your provider's quote on the same day.
  2. Watch MPC dates; rate decisions can shift investor flows.
  3. Avoid converting all at once in a demand season if the payment date allows you to spread it.
  4. Read news of large CBN sales or oil disruptions as signals, not forecasts.

Where Pryme fits

Pryme lets you hold NGN, USD, GBP and EUR and convert with Swap when you choose, with the rate shown before you approve. The live rate is shown in the app, not here.

Questions people ask

Why did the naira fall today?

Usually because dollar demand outran supply that day: importers or investors buying, or lower inflows from oil or remittances. One day's move is not a trend.

Does the CBN fix the naira rate?

No. Since October 2023 the official market works on a willing buyer, willing seller basis. The CBN can still sell or buy dollars to smooth movements.

Does oil price affect the naira?

Yes, through export earnings and government dollar income, though output, investor flows and remittances matter too.

When is dollar demand highest in Nigeria?

Commonly before school terms abroad, during travel seasons and when importers stock up for festive periods. Patterns vary by year.
