Ten years, one trunk

The business has changed shape four times and never changed what it was rooted in. Each version was built out of what the last one could not do.

2016E-commerce

An online grocery store, built out of a faulty tab. Selling the food was the easy part — taking the money for it, and moving it, turned out to be the business.

2018OjirehPrime Card

A prepaid card. The first time the company issued rather than resold, and the first time it carried the obligations that come with holding somebody else’s money.

2020Microfinance bank

PrymeSolid Allianze acquired — an existing bank with an existing licence. The perimeter stopped being someone else’s to draw.

2023Multicurrency

More than one currency on one balance, and the rebrand to Pryme. A Nigerian business could hold dollars without holding a second institution.

2026Agentic operations

Accounts that do the work rather than only hold value. Five agents on the account, inside a policy you write — which is where the new mark starts.

Questions

The things people ask us first.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives people and businesses in Nigeria one account that holds Naira alongside dollars, pounds and euros, and a set of agents that do the running of it — keeping the books, chasing what is owed, answering customers and paying bills. Nothing leaves an account without the owner’s approval.

Can I hold dollars, pounds and euros in a Pryme account?

Yes. A Pryme account holds Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros side by side on one ledger, each with its own account details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area. You can swap between them at a rate you set, and every currency has its own statement.

What is Spaces?

Spaces is available in Nigeria. It gives a shopper money to spend that can only be spent with a participating business. The business is paid into its Naira account whether or not the shopper repays, because Pryme carries the credit. For the business it is free to join, there is nothing monthly, and the customer’s identity is never shown — only a reference and what it is worth.

What do the agents on a Pryme Business Account do?

Five agents come with the account. The Chief of Staff runs the week and keeps what is stuck moving. Finance watches the money and keeps the books as you trade. Compliance keeps the filings on time and screens what moves. Sales chases what you are owed. Customer Support answers your customers and follows up. Each has a job description, a budget and a ceiling you set, and each one proposes rather than acts — nothing leaves the account without your signature.

How does Pryme Pay work?

Pryme Pay takes payments on your own site or on a checkout page you control. The buyer is given a one-time account number and transfers to it from any bank app or by USSD — no card, no OTP, nothing to type in. The money lands in the same account your agents are running, already matched to the order and already in your books.

What are Savings Boxes?

Savings Boxes are separate pots inside a Pryme account, held in Naira. Flexible Boxes can be withdrawn at any time, Fixed Boxes hold to a date, Investment Boxes hold for longer, and Interest-free Boxes earn nothing by design. A business can use them to ring-fence payroll and the tax it withholds, so that money cannot be spent by accident.

Who holds my money, and is it protected?

Pryme is a financial technology company, not a bank. Accounts and deposits are provided by Solid Allianze Microfinance Bank Limited, which is licensed by the Central Bank of Nigeria and is a member of the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation.

Can I build on Pryme?

Yes. Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives you one account that holds US dollars, pounds sterling and euros beside Naira, with an assistant that runs the account for you and asks before anything moves. Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, and further markets open as each licence lands.

Can I open a Pryme account from outside Nigeria?

Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, subject to verification and approval. Foreign-currency balances are held and converted inside that account, so you can hold, receive and swap dollars, pounds and euros wherever you are.

Which currencies can I hold with Pryme?

Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros, side by side on one ledger. Each has its own details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area — and each has its own statement.

How do I send money to Nigeria with Pryme?

Swap at a rate you set rather than the rate of the day, then send to any Pryme username or to a Nigerian bank account. There is no fee to send to another Pryme account.

What does the assistant do?

Eva is the assistant inside the Pryme app. She opens accounts, moves money, saves toward your goals, pays what is due and follows up what is owed to you — and asks you before anything moves.

What is Pryme Rails?

Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

Wema Bank dollar card: how to get one and spending limits

Wema's MasterCard Dollar Debit Card and ALAT virtual dollar card compared: how to get each, published limits and fees, and what is still unclear.

The short answer

Wema offers a physical MasterCard Dollar Debit Card linked to a domiciliary account, requested at any branch, with published daily limits of $1,000 at ATMs, $10,000 at POS and $5,000 online (Wema help centre, December 2021). For online-only use, the ALAT Virtual Dollar Card is a prepaid card set up in the app; Wema says a dollar card can hold up to $20,000.

Your options for spending dollars with Wema

Wema's help centre lists four card types relevant to spending abroad or on foreign websites: the MasterCard Dollar Debit Card, the ALAT Virtual Dollar Card, a Visa USD Travel Card and prepaid cards. We read the first two pages in full; the travel card and prepaid card pages exist but we could not read their terms, so we leave their limits out. Wema's naira debit cards are a separate question, covered below.

Fees$3 card fee; $10 annual; $2 per ATM withdrawal; POS and web freeNot stated on the page we read
Page date27 December 202112 February 2021

Both pages are a few years old. Card limits in Nigeria changed several times in 2025 and 2026 as dollar supply improved, so confirm the current figures in ALAT or with Wema before planning a trip around them.

Getting the MasterCard Dollar Debit Card

  1. Open a domiciliary account if you do not have one. Wema's Dom Plus account needs a minimum opening balance of $100 for individuals; see our Wema domiciliary account guide.
  2. Visit any Wema branch with a valid ID and ask for the dollar-denominated debit MasterCard, as Wema's page instructs.
  3. Fund the domiciliary account with dollars: a transfer from abroad, a receipt from an international money transfer operator (Wema's Dom Plus FAQ says these are accepted), or a cash lodgement.
  4. Activate the card and set the PIN when you collect it.
  5. Keep enough in the account for the $10 annual fee and any ATM charges.

Wema's Dom Plus FAQ says dollar debit cards are available to individuals and to organisations with a single signatory.

Worked example of costs

Example only, using the fees on Wema's December 2021 page. In your first year you get the card ($3), pay the annual fee ($10), make four ATM withdrawals abroad ($2 each, $8) and spend online and at shops (free). Total card charges: $3 + $10 + $8 = $21, before any charge the foreign ATM's owner adds.

Getting the ALAT Virtual Dollar Card

Wema describes it as "a non-physical dollar-denominated card for paying online", created and funded in the ALAT app. Its FAQ says the card is prepaid and works on websites that accept Mastercard or Visa dollar cards. It is meant for purchases, not for sending money to another person. The $20,000 figure on Wema's page is a ceiling on what the card can hold. Funding usually means converting naira to dollars in the app at the rate shown at the time; check the rate and any funding fee on screen before you confirm. Our separate guide to ALAT virtual dollar cards covers the app steps.

When a dollar card payment fails

Foreign merchants decline Nigerian cards for several reasons that have nothing to do with your balance: the card's web channel is switched off in card control, the merchant's fraud system blocks the card's country, the billing address you typed does not match, or the payment exceeds a daily limit. Work through these before calling Wema. If you were debited and the merchant says it failed, wait for the authorisation to drop off, which can take days on card schemes, then raise a dispute with Wema with the merchant name, date, amount and any reference.

Safety habits for online dollar spending

  • Use the virtual card for subscriptions and unfamiliar sites, and keep a low balance on it.
  • Turn the card's web channel off in ALAT when you are not using it.
  • Never send a card's full number and CVV by chat or email; Wema's Fraud FAQ treats that as a compromised card.

What about Wema naira cards abroad?

Wema's Debit Cards FAQ says its Mastercard and Visa debit cards can be used internationally, while Verve is best used in Nigeria. The international spending limit on Wema naira cards was not stated on the pages we read in October 2026. Banks set these limits themselves and changed them repeatedly in 2026, so ask Wema or check the card settings in ALAT before you travel.

What to check first

  • Is your need online only? A virtual card avoids carrying plastic.
  • Will you withdraw cash abroad? Only the physical dollar card offers ATM access among the two.
  • Are your daily needs above $5,000 online or $10,000 at POS? Then ask Wema about higher limits before relying on the card.
  • Is international use switched on in card control? Cards can be turned off by channel.

Where Pryme fits

A Pryme Personal account holds USD, GBP and EUR alongside naira, with local account details for each, so dollars you receive can stay in dollars until you choose to convert with Swap. See multicurrency accounts.

Questions people ask

How do I get a Wema dollar card?

Open a domiciliary account, then request the MasterCard Dollar Debit Card at any Wema branch. For online use only, create the ALAT Virtual Dollar Card in the app.

What is the limit on Wema dollar card?

Wema's December 2021 page gives daily limits of $1,000 at ATMs, $10,000 at POS and $5,000 online for the MasterCard Dollar Debit Card. Confirm current limits with Wema.

How much is the Wema dollar card?

Wema lists a $3 card fee, a $10 annual fee and $2 per ATM withdrawal; POS and web transactions are free.

Can I transfer money with ALAT virtual dollar card?

Wema's FAQ describes it as a prepaid card for buying goods and services online, not a money transfer tool.
