Questions

The things people ask us first.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives people and businesses in Nigeria one account that holds Naira alongside dollars, pounds and euros, and a set of agents that do the running of it — keeping the books, chasing what is owed, answering customers and paying bills. Nothing leaves an account without the owner’s approval.

Can I hold dollars, pounds and euros in a Pryme account?

Yes. A Pryme account holds Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros side by side on one ledger, each with its own account details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area. You can swap between them at a rate you set, and every currency has its own statement.

What is Spaces?

Spaces is available in Nigeria. It gives a shopper money to spend that can only be spent with a participating business. The business is paid into its Naira account whether or not the shopper repays, because Pryme carries the credit. For the business it is free to join, there is nothing monthly, and the customer’s identity is never shown — only a reference and what it is worth.

What do the agents on a Pryme Business Account do?

Five agents come with the account. The Chief of Staff runs the week and keeps what is stuck moving. Finance watches the money and keeps the books as you trade. Compliance keeps the filings on time and screens what moves. Sales chases what you are owed. Customer Support answers your customers and follows up. Each has a job description, a budget and a ceiling you set, and each one proposes rather than acts — nothing leaves the account without your signature.

How does Pryme Pay work?

Pryme Pay takes payments on your own site or on a checkout page you control. The buyer is given a one-time account number and transfers to it from any bank app or by USSD — no card, no OTP, nothing to type in. The money lands in the same account your agents are running, already matched to the order and already in your books.

What are Savings Boxes?

Savings Boxes are separate pots inside a Pryme account, held in Naira. Flexible Boxes can be withdrawn at any time, Fixed Boxes hold to a date, Investment Boxes hold for longer, and Interest-free Boxes earn nothing by design. A business can use them to ring-fence payroll and the tax it withholds, so that money cannot be spent by accident.

Who holds my money, and is it protected?

Pryme is a financial technology company, not a bank. Accounts and deposits are provided by Solid Allianze Microfinance Bank Limited, which is licensed by the Central Bank of Nigeria and is a member of the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation.

Can I build on Pryme?

Yes. Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives you one account that holds US dollars, pounds sterling and euros beside Naira, with an assistant that runs the account for you and asks before anything moves. Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, and further markets open as each licence lands.

Can I open a Pryme account from outside Nigeria?

Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, subject to verification and approval. Foreign-currency balances are held and converted inside that account, so you can hold, receive and swap dollars, pounds and euros wherever you are.

Which currencies can I hold with Pryme?

Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros, side by side on one ledger. Each has its own details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area — and each has its own statement.

How do I send money to Nigeria with Pryme?

Swap at a rate you set rather than the rate of the day, then send to any Pryme username or to a Nigerian bank account. There is no fee to send to another Pryme account.

What does the assistant do?

Eva is the assistant inside the Pryme app. She opens accounts, moves money, saves toward your goals, pays what is due and follows up what is owed to you — and asks you before anything moves.

What is Pryme Rails?

Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

Water in Onitsha: supply, boreholes and tanker prices

Where public water reaches in Onitsha after the scheme was revived, what borehole, tanker and bag water cost as labelled examples, and how to cut the bill.

The short answer

Public pipe-borne water returned to parts of Onitsha North and Onitsha South in 2025 after the state revived the Onitsha water scheme, but many homes and shops still rely on boreholes, tanker deliveries and bagged water. Prices are not regulated; residents in Anambra have reported borehole water at ₦50 a gallon, rising to ₦100 when there is no power, and bags of drinking water at ₦450.

Water in Onitsha is a patchwork. Some streets now have public supply again; many compounds run their own borehole; others buy from tanker operators, borehole owners or water vendors. Drinking water usually comes in bags or bottles. This guide sets out what is known about public supply, what each alternative costs and how households keep the bill down.

Public supply: what has changed

In October 2025, Arise News reported residents of Onitsha North and Onitsha South celebrating the return of pipe-borne water after the state government revived the city's water project (Arise News, Oct 2025). A Ripples Nigeria investigation described the Onitsha Water Scheme as funded by the World Bank and the African Development Bank, originally due for completion by 2020 and still in progress, and said the state had promised to revive the Onitsha, Awka, Nnewi and Otucha schemes (Ripples Nigeria, undated).

Responsibility for urban water sits with state bodies including the Anambra State Urban Water Asset Holdings Corporation and the Ministry of Public Utilities and Water Resources, under the state's Water Supply and Sanitation Law of 2015, according to the same report. We could not confirm from an official page which streets are now connected or what the public tariff is. To find out whether your area is served, ask neighbours, check for a working connection at the compound, or contact the ministry.

The alternatives and what they cost

SourceWhat we knowStatus of the figure
Borehole water from a vendor₦50 per gallon, ₦100 when there is no power (resident in Umuoji, Anambra)Reported by Ripples Nigeria, undated
Bag of drinking water₦450 a bag (two residents)Reported by Ripples Nigeria, undated
Tanker deliveryVaries by tank size, distance and seasonNo sourced figure; see example below
Drilling your own boreholeVaries by depth, ground and pumpNo sourced figure; get several written quotes

The doubling of vendor prices when there is no power shows the hidden link between water and electricity: most boreholes run on electric pumps, so outages push up costs. If you are on a prepaid meter, see buying EEDC electricity tokens in Onitsha.

Example: a household water budget

Example only, for a family of five in a flat without public supply. Prices are illustrative except where marked.

ItemExample monthly cost
Washing and cooking water, 15 gallons a day × 30 days at ₦50 (reported price)₦22,500
Extra on 8 outage days, 15 gallons × ₦50 more₦6,000
Drinking water, 8 bags at ₦450 (reported price)₦3,600
Total₦32,100

Check: 15 × 30 × 50 = 22,500; 15 × 8 × 50 = 6,000; 8 × 450 = 3,600; 22,500 + 6,000 + 3,600 = 32,100. A compound that shares a borehole and splits power and maintenance costs among tenants may pay much less per household; a family buying from tankers may pay more. Businesses that depend on water, such as eateries, should count it with power and levies; see doing business in Anambra State.

Boreholes: shared costs and questions to ask

Many Onitsha compounds share one borehole. That is cheaper than buying water, but the costs still need to be shared fairly. Ask, ideally in writing:

  • Who pays for power or fuel to run the pump?
  • Who pays for repairs, such as a burnt pump or a broken tank?
  • Is the water treated, and is the tank cleaned regularly?
  • Is there a monthly contribution, and who keeps the record?

If you plan to drill, get written quotes from several drillers that state depth, casing, pump type and what happens if the hole yields poor water. Ask neighbours how deep their boreholes are and how the water tastes.

Tanker water: what to agree

Households and businesses without a borehole often buy water by the tanker. There is no published price list for Onitsha, and quotes depend on tank size, the distance from the source, road access to your compound and the season, with dry-season demand pushing prices up. Before booking, agree in writing:

  • The tank size in litres, and whether the price is for a full tank.
  • Where the water comes from, and whether it is suitable for drinking or only for washing.
  • Whether delivery and pumping into your overhead tank are included.
  • How you pay, and that you pay after delivery, not before.

Clean your storage tank regularly, especially after mixing water from different sources.

What to check first

  1. Whether your street has a working public connection.
  2. Who supplies water to the compound, and on what terms.
  3. Whether drinking water from a borehole is safe, or whether you need bagged or bottled water.
  4. Who pays for borehole power and repairs, if you rent.

Water is one of the costs to weigh when choosing where to live; see rent in Onitsha by area.

Where Pryme fits

Water vendors and tanker operators often accept transfers. A Pryme account lets you send a transfer and keep a record, and you can pay electricity bills in the app, which helps keep a borehole pump running.
