Questions

The things people ask us first.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives people and businesses in Nigeria one account that holds Naira alongside dollars, pounds and euros, and a set of agents that do the running of it — keeping the books, chasing what is owed, answering customers and paying bills. Nothing leaves an account without the owner’s approval.

Can I hold dollars, pounds and euros in a Pryme account?

Yes. A Pryme account holds Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros side by side on one ledger, each with its own account details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area. You can swap between them at a rate you set, and every currency has its own statement.

What is Spaces?

Spaces is available in Nigeria. It gives a shopper money to spend that can only be spent with a participating business. The business is paid into its Naira account whether or not the shopper repays, because Pryme carries the credit. For the business it is free to join, there is nothing monthly, and the customer’s identity is never shown — only a reference and what it is worth.

What do the agents on a Pryme Business Account do?

Five agents come with the account. The Chief of Staff runs the week and keeps what is stuck moving. Finance watches the money and keeps the books as you trade. Compliance keeps the filings on time and screens what moves. Sales chases what you are owed. Customer Support answers your customers and follows up. Each has a job description, a budget and a ceiling you set, and each one proposes rather than acts — nothing leaves the account without your signature.

How does Pryme Pay work?

Pryme Pay takes payments on your own site or on a checkout page you control. The buyer is given a one-time account number and transfers to it from any bank app or by USSD — no card, no OTP, nothing to type in. The money lands in the same account your agents are running, already matched to the order and already in your books.

What are Savings Boxes?

Savings Boxes are separate pots inside a Pryme account, held in Naira. Flexible Boxes can be withdrawn at any time, Fixed Boxes hold to a date, Investment Boxes hold for longer, and Interest-free Boxes earn nothing by design. A business can use them to ring-fence payroll and the tax it withholds, so that money cannot be spent by accident.

Who holds my money, and is it protected?

Pryme is a financial technology company, not a bank. Accounts and deposits are provided by Solid Allianze Microfinance Bank Limited, which is licensed by the Central Bank of Nigeria and is a member of the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation.

Can I build on Pryme?

Yes. Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives you one account that holds US dollars, pounds sterling and euros beside Naira, with an assistant that runs the account for you and asks before anything moves. Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, and further markets open as each licence lands.

Can I open a Pryme account from outside Nigeria?

Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, subject to verification and approval. Foreign-currency balances are held and converted inside that account, so you can hold, receive and swap dollars, pounds and euros wherever you are.

Which currencies can I hold with Pryme?

Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros, side by side on one ledger. Each has its own details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area — and each has its own statement.

How do I send money to Nigeria with Pryme?

Swap at a rate you set rather than the rate of the day, then send to any Pryme username or to a Nigerian bank account. There is no fee to send to another Pryme account.

What does the assistant do?

Eva is the assistant inside the Pryme app. She opens accounts, moves money, saves toward your goals, pays what is due and follows up what is owed to you — and asks you before anything moves.

What is Pryme Rails?

Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

ASWAMA waste charges in Onitsha: rates and how to pay

The ASWAMA yearly waste rates for homes and businesses in Onitsha from the 2022 schedule, how the urban class applies and how to pay safely.

The short answer

Under rates the Anambra State Waste Management Agency (ASWAMA) introduced from 1 October 2022, Onitsha North and Onitsha South are classed as urban, with yearly charges of ₦2,400 for a one-room unit, ₦4,800 for a one-bedroom, ₦7,200 for a two- or three-bedroom flat, ₦12,000 for a detached bungalow and ₦24,000 for a duplex. Business rates are higher and set by type; check for any newer schedule and pay only against an official ASWAMA demand.

Every household and business in Onitsha is expected to pay a yearly waste charge to the Anambra State Waste Management Agency, ASWAMA. Many residents first meet it as a demand notice on the gate or a visit from a collector. This guide sets out the rates from the most recent published schedule we could find, how they apply in Onitsha and how to pay safely.

How the rates are set

ASWAMA groups local government areas into three classes, urban, semi-urban and rural, and charges more in urban areas. Under the schedule announced in October 2022, the urban class covers Awka South, Onitsha North, Onitsha South, Aguata, Nnewi North, Idemili North and Ogbaru (Peoples Gazette, Oct 2022). That means most of Onitsha and its immediate fringes pay urban rates.

Residential rates

Yearly charges from 1 October 2022, as reported by Prime Business Africa (Oct 2022):

PropertyUrban (Onitsha)Semi-urbanRural
One room₦2,400₦1,800₦1,200
One-bedroom₦4,800₦3,600₦2,400
Flat (2 to 3 bedrooms)₦7,200₦5,400₦3,600
Detached bungalow₦12,000₦9,000₦6,000
Duplex₦24,000₦18,000₦12,000

Business rates

The same schedule set higher yearly charges for businesses. A selection of the urban rates:

Business typeUrban yearly rate
Small restaurant or drinking parlour₦48,000
Large restaurant or drinking parlour₦120,000
Fast food outlet₦360,000
Hotel, 1 to 9 rooms₦120,000
Hotel, 10 to 19 rooms₦240,000
Night club₦120,000
Microfinance bank, bureau de change or insurance office₦120,000
Commercial bank₦480,000
Gaming or pool agency₦9,600

The agency said at the time that more lists would follow, and the 2022 article does not set out separate rates for market stalls or ordinary lock-up shops. If you run a shop, ask ASWAMA which category applies to you.

Shops and mixed-use buildings

Many Onitsha buildings combine shops on the ground floor with flats above. In that case, expect separate charges for the residential units and for each business, according to its category. A restaurant downstairs is billed at the restaurant rate, not the flat rate. Business owners should keep their waste receipt with their other yearly levy receipts, since inspectors and collectors may ask to see it, and should check whether their market or plaza management already collects a waste charge on the agency's behalf before paying twice.

Are these rates current?

These are the most recent published rates we could confirm, from October 2022. ASWAMA described them as a slight increase on earlier rates. They may have been revised since. Before paying, compare the amount on your demand notice with this table; if it differs, ask ASWAMA for the current schedule and the reason.

Example: a landlord's yearly bill

Example only, using the 2022 urban rates. A compound in Onitsha South with four one-room units, two one-bedroom flats and one 3-bedroom flat.

UnitCalculationYearly charge
One-room units4 × ₦2,400₦9,600
One-bedroom flats2 × ₦4,800₦9,600
3-bedroom flat1 × ₦7,200₦7,200
Total₦26,400

Check: 9,600 + 9,600 + 7,200 = 26,400. Whether the landlord or each tenant pays depends on the tenancy agreement; agree it in writing. See rent in Onitsha by area.

Steps: paying safely

  1. Wait for an official ASWAMA demand notice with your property details and amount.
  2. Check the category and amount against the published rates.
  3. Pay only through the channel printed on the demand notice or confirmed by ASWAMA itself, and to an account in the agency's or state's name, never to an individual's personal account.
  4. Get an official receipt and keep it; collectors may ask to see it later in the year.
  5. If someone without identification demands cash, decline and report it to ASWAMA.

The 2022 announcements did not name payment channels, and we could not confirm current ones from an official page, so rely on the notice and the agency.

If you think the charge is wrong

Mistakes happen: a one-room unit billed as a flat, a closed shop still on the list, or a compound charged twice. Raise it before the due date.

  • Write to ASWAMA, quoting the demand notice number, and state the correct category with evidence such as a tenancy agreement or photos.
  • Keep a copy of the letter and any acknowledgement.
  • Do not ignore the notice: unpaid charges can lead to enforcement, and a written complaint shows you engaged.

What the charge covers

The waste charge funds collection and disposal of refuse by the agency and its contractors. Residents still have a part to play: bag refuse, use the approved collection points or schedule in your area, and avoid dumping in drains, which worsens flooding in low-lying parts of Onitsha during the rains. Ask your landlord or street association about the collection days for your area.

Where it fits with other levies

The waste charge is separate from state taxes and local government levies on businesses. Traders should read AIRS levies for Onitsha traders and doing business in Anambra State.

Where Pryme fits

Yearly charges are easy to forget. A Personal Assistant in a Pryme account can remind you when the charge is due, and a Flexible Savings Box can hold the money; nothing moves without your approval.

Questions people ask

How much is ASWAMA levy in Onitsha?

Under rates from 1 October 2022, urban Onitsha pays ₦2,400 a year for one room, ₦4,800 for a one-bedroom, ₦7,200 for a 2 or 3-bedroom flat, ₦12,000 for a bungalow and ₦24,000 for a duplex. Check for newer rates.

Who pays ASWAMA, landlord or tenant?

It depends on the tenancy agreement. Agree in writing who pays before you move in.

How do I pay ASWAMA?

Use the channel on the official demand notice or confirmed by ASWAMA, pay to an account in the agency's or state's name and keep the receipt.

Is Onitsha urban or semi-urban for ASWAMA?

Onitsha North and Onitsha South are both in the urban class, as are Idemili North and Ogbaru.
