Questions

The things people ask us first.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives people and businesses in Nigeria one account that holds Naira alongside dollars, pounds and euros, and a set of agents that do the running of it — keeping the books, chasing what is owed, answering customers and paying bills. Nothing leaves an account without the owner’s approval.

Can I hold dollars, pounds and euros in a Pryme account?

Yes. A Pryme account holds Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros side by side on one ledger, each with its own account details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area. You can swap between them at a rate you set, and every currency has its own statement.

What is Spaces?

Spaces is available in Nigeria. It gives a shopper money to spend that can only be spent with a participating business. The business is paid into its Naira account whether or not the shopper repays, because Pryme carries the credit. For the business it is free to join, there is nothing monthly, and the customer’s identity is never shown — only a reference and what it is worth.

What do the agents on a Pryme Business Account do?

Five agents come with the account. The Chief of Staff runs the week and keeps what is stuck moving. Finance watches the money and keeps the books as you trade. Compliance keeps the filings on time and screens what moves. Sales chases what you are owed. Customer Support answers your customers and follows up. Each has a job description, a budget and a ceiling you set, and each one proposes rather than acts — nothing leaves the account without your signature.

How does Pryme Pay work?

Pryme Pay takes payments on your own site or on a checkout page you control. The buyer is given a one-time account number and transfers to it from any bank app or by USSD — no card, no OTP, nothing to type in. The money lands in the same account your agents are running, already matched to the order and already in your books.

What are Savings Boxes?

Savings Boxes are separate pots inside a Pryme account, held in Naira. Flexible Boxes can be withdrawn at any time, Fixed Boxes hold to a date, Investment Boxes hold for longer, and Interest-free Boxes earn nothing by design. A business can use them to ring-fence payroll and the tax it withholds, so that money cannot be spent by accident.

Who holds my money, and is it protected?

Pryme is a financial technology company, not a bank. Accounts and deposits are provided by Solid Allianze Microfinance Bank Limited, which is licensed by the Central Bank of Nigeria and is a member of the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation.

Can I build on Pryme?

Yes. Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives you one account that holds US dollars, pounds sterling and euros beside Naira, with an assistant that runs the account for you and asks before anything moves. Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, and further markets open as each licence lands.

Can I open a Pryme account from outside Nigeria?

Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, subject to verification and approval. Foreign-currency balances are held and converted inside that account, so you can hold, receive and swap dollars, pounds and euros wherever you are.

Which currencies can I hold with Pryme?

Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros, side by side on one ledger. Each has its own details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area — and each has its own statement.

How do I send money to Nigeria with Pryme?

Swap at a rate you set rather than the rate of the day, then send to any Pryme username or to a Nigerian bank account. There is no fee to send to another Pryme account.

What does the assistant do?

Eva is the assistant inside the Pryme app. She opens accounts, moves money, saves toward your goals, pays what is due and follows up what is owed to you — and asks you before anything moves.

What is Pryme Rails?

Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

Vehicle maintenance reserves for a transport business

How to work out a maintenance reserve per kilometre for each vehicle, with a worked example, plus a replacement fund and when to update the figures.

The short answer

List each maintenance item with its usual interval in kilometres and its current cost, divide cost by interval to get a cost per kilometre, add the items together, and set that amount aside for every kilometre the vehicle runs. In the example below a vehicle needs about ₦36 per km, or ₦187,200 a month at 5,200 km. Keep the reserve in a separate account, update prices at least quarterly, and save separately for replacing the vehicle.

Why per kilometre, not per month

Wear follows distance. A bus that runs 300 km a day wears tyres, brakes and engine oil twice as fast as one that runs 150 km. A flat monthly reserve under-saves for busy vehicles and over-saves for idle ones. A reserve per kilometre scales with use, and it gives you a figure you can build into the driver's daily return or your fare.

Step 1: list the items and intervals

Use the manufacturer's service schedule, your mechanic's advice and your own history to list each wear item with how often it is replaced. Price each from current quotes. The figures below are examples, not quotes or recommended intervals.

ItemCost (example)Interval (example)Cost per km
Oil and filter service₦45,0005,000 km₦9.00
Set of tyres₦400,00040,000 km₦10.00
Brake pads and service₦60,00020,000 km₦3.00
Battery₦120,00060,000 km₦2.00
Suspension, clutch and other major parts₦1,200,000100,000 km₦12.00
Total₦36.00

Step 2: turn it into a monthly sum

Multiply the cost per kilometre by the distance the vehicle runs. Example: 200 km a day for 26 days is 5,200 km a month, so the reserve is 5,200 × ₦36 = ₦187,200 a month, or ₦7,200 for each working day.

If you collect a daily return from a driver, ₦7,200 of each day's return in this example belongs to the maintenance reserve, not to you. See driver daily returns for how the return is set.

Step 3: add a buffer for breakdowns

Planned wear is predictable; breakdowns are not. Many operators add a percentage on top for unplanned repairs and roadside recovery. Example: a 20 per cent buffer on ₦36 is ₦7.20, making ₦43.20 per km, or ₦224,640 a month at 5,200 km. Track what you actually spend on unplanned repairs for six months and adjust the buffer to your own history.

Why two similar vehicles need different reserves

Example: two identical buses each cost ₦36 per km to maintain on paper. One runs 120 km a day on tarred roads around a city centre; the other runs 260 km a day with stretches of broken road. At 26 days a month the first needs ₦112,320 and the second ₦243,360, before any buffer. In practice the second will also wear tyres and suspension faster than the manual's intervals, so its per-km figure should rise too. Keep separate figures for each vehicle rather than one fleet average, which hides the vehicle that is quietly costing you most.

Step 4: keep prices current

Parts prices in naira move with inflation and the exchange rate, since many parts are imported. The National Bureau of Statistics put headline inflation at 14.63 per cent year on year in September 2026, according to Voice of Nigeria; check the NBS site for the latest release. Re-price your list at least every quarter, and immediately after any large move in the naira. A reserve calculated from last year's tyre price will be short exactly when you need it.

The replacement fund is separate

Maintenance keeps the vehicle running; it does not buy the next one. Save for replacement separately. Example: a vehicle bought for ₦20,000,000 that you expect to replace after five years and sell for ₦4,000,000 needs ₦16,000,000 over 60 months, or about ₦266,667 a month, before any rise in vehicle prices.

For tax, a company does not deduct the reserve itself. It deducts repair costs when incurred and claims capital allowances on the vehicle. PwC's summary (May 2026) of the Nigeria Tax Act 2025 puts motor vehicles in the class with a 25 per cent annual allowance; our guide to capital allowances works through an example.

Running the reserve

  • Move the reserve into a separate account every week, so it is not spent on daily costs.
  • Pay every maintenance bill from that account and keep the invoice with the plate number.
  • Keep an odometer log per vehicle; without it the per-km maths is a guess.
  • Compare reserve balance with upcoming items monthly, such as tyres due in the next 5,000 km.
  • If the reserve is regularly short, raise the per-km figure, not the overdraft.

Our guide to an emergency cash buffer covers the wider safety net for the business. It also helps to keep a simple history per vehicle: each repair, its cost and the odometer reading. After a year you will know your real intervals, which are often shorter than the manual's on Nigerian roads, and your reserve figure will come from your own evidence rather than guesswork.

Where Pryme fits

A Pryme Business Account can run separate accounts under one business, so maintenance and replacement money sit apart from operating cash, and the Finance agent can prepare the weekly transfer for a person to approve.

Questions people ask

How much should I save for vehicle maintenance per km?

Add up each maintenance item's cost divided by its replacement interval in kilometres. In our example that came to ₦36 per km; your vehicle and prices will differ.

How do I calculate maintenance cost for a commercial bus?

List each wear item, price it, divide by its interval in km, total the results, then multiply by monthly distance and add a buffer for breakdowns.

Is a maintenance reserve tax deductible in Nigeria?

The reserve itself is a saving, not a cost. Repairs are deducted when incurred, and the vehicle earns capital allowances, which PwC lists at 25 per cent a year for motor vehicles under the 2025 Act.

How often should I update my maintenance reserve?

At least every quarter, and after any sharp move in the naira, because parts prices change with inflation and the exchange rate.
