Questions

The things people ask us first.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives people and businesses in Nigeria one account that holds Naira alongside dollars, pounds and euros, and a set of agents that do the running of it — keeping the books, chasing what is owed, answering customers and paying bills. Nothing leaves an account without the owner’s approval.

Can I hold dollars, pounds and euros in a Pryme account?

Yes. A Pryme account holds Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros side by side on one ledger, each with its own account details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area. You can swap between them at a rate you set, and every currency has its own statement.

What is Spaces?

Spaces is available in Nigeria. It gives a shopper money to spend that can only be spent with a participating business. The business is paid into its Naira account whether or not the shopper repays, because Pryme carries the credit. For the business it is free to join, there is nothing monthly, and the customer’s identity is never shown — only a reference and what it is worth.

What do the agents on a Pryme Business Account do?

Five agents come with the account. The Chief of Staff runs the week and keeps what is stuck moving. Finance watches the money and keeps the books as you trade. Compliance keeps the filings on time and screens what moves. Sales chases what you are owed. Customer Support answers your customers and follows up. Each has a job description, a budget and a ceiling you set, and each one proposes rather than acts — nothing leaves the account without your signature.

How does Pryme Pay work?

Pryme Pay takes payments on your own site or on a checkout page you control. The buyer is given a one-time account number and transfers to it from any bank app or by USSD — no card, no OTP, nothing to type in. The money lands in the same account your agents are running, already matched to the order and already in your books.

What are Savings Boxes?

Savings Boxes are separate pots inside a Pryme account, held in Naira. Flexible Boxes can be withdrawn at any time, Fixed Boxes hold to a date, Investment Boxes hold for longer, and Interest-free Boxes earn nothing by design. A business can use them to ring-fence payroll and the tax it withholds, so that money cannot be spent by accident.

Who holds my money, and is it protected?

Pryme is a financial technology company, not a bank. Accounts and deposits are provided by Solid Allianze Microfinance Bank Limited, which is licensed by the Central Bank of Nigeria and is a member of the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation.

Can I build on Pryme?

Yes. Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives you one account that holds US dollars, pounds sterling and euros beside Naira, with an assistant that runs the account for you and asks before anything moves. Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, and further markets open as each licence lands.

Can I open a Pryme account from outside Nigeria?

Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, subject to verification and approval. Foreign-currency balances are held and converted inside that account, so you can hold, receive and swap dollars, pounds and euros wherever you are.

Which currencies can I hold with Pryme?

Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros, side by side on one ledger. Each has its own details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area — and each has its own statement.

How do I send money to Nigeria with Pryme?

Swap at a rate you set rather than the rate of the day, then send to any Pryme username or to a Nigerian bank account. There is no fee to send to another Pryme account.

What does the assistant do?

Eva is the assistant inside the Pryme app. She opens accounts, moves money, saves toward your goals, pays what is due and follows up what is owed to you — and asks you before anything moves.

What is Pryme Rails?

Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

Life in Port Harcourt

More paying customers for a Port Harcourt supermarket

How a Port Harcourt supermarket or mini-mart wins regular, paying shoppers against Mile One, Oil Mill and the big Aba Road stores.

The short answer

A Port Harcourt supermarket wins paying customers by being the closest reliable shop for a defined set of streets, keeping staples in stock through the rains and PHED outages, and making payment easy. Joining Spaces adds shoppers who hold Loans on Spaces, credit that can only be spent with Spaces merchants, and Spaces merchants are available in Port Harcourt.

Who you are really competing with

Most Port Harcourt households split their food shopping three ways. Bulk foodstuff, pepper, fish and palm oil come from the open markets: Mile One in Diobu, Oil Mill near Rumukrushi, Creek Road in the Township and the busy stretch around Rumuokoro. Branded goods and a weekend treat come from the large stores along Aba Road, Peter Odili Road and in GRA. Everything in between, the bread, noodles, detergent, nappies and drinks bought on a Tuesday night, comes from whichever mini-mart is closest and open.

That third slot is where an independent supermarket earns its living. You will rarely beat Oil Mill on a bag of garri or a big store on a promotion, but you can win the weekday top-up shop for every estate within a ten-minute keke ride. Define that catchment carefully: a shop on a Woji close serves different people from one on Ikwerre Road near Rumuokwuta.

Stock for how Port Harcourt shops

  • Weekday staples first. Bread, eggs, sachet and bottled water, noodles, sugar, tomato paste, seasoning cubes, soap and nappies should never run out. A gap on any of these sends a regular to the next shop, and some do not come back.
  • Pack sizes for both incomes. GRA and Old GRA shoppers buy cartons; Rumuola and D-Line shoppers often buy singles. Carry both, priced clearly.
  • Frozen and chilled with a plan. PHED supplies feeders under bands set by hours of daily supply, from Band A at 20 hours or more down to Band E at four. Know your band, size your generator or inverter for the freezers, and do not overstock frozen protein you cannot keep cold.
  • Rainy-season lines. NiMet's 2026 outlook expected an early onset of rains in Rivers State. Umbrellas, torches, candles, rechargeable lamps and insect repellent move well once the rains settle in.

Make the shop easy to reach and easy to pay

Parking is scarce on much of Ikwerre Road and Aba Road, and flooding cuts some streets off in heavy rain. A shop that takes WhatsApp orders and delivers within its own estate keeps customers on the days they will not come out. Write the delivery boundary down, charge a flat fee you can show in writing and keep a record of every order.

At the till, take card, transfer and cash, and never release goods on a screenshot. Our guide on confirming a transfer before staff release goods sets out a simple routine. Pricing when supplier costs keep moving is covered in how to price groceries when costs keep rising.

A worked example: the month-end gap

Example only. A mini-mart in Rumuokoro takes about ₦180,000 a day in the first fortnight of the month and about ₦110,000 in the last ten days, when salaries are running out. Most of the drop is regulars buying less, not regulars leaving.

LeverWhat the shop doesExample effect
Smaller packsPuts single sachets and small packs on the counterKeeps the visit even when the basket shrinks
Delivery to estateAccepts WhatsApp orders for two nearby estatesRecovers some rainy-day sales
Credit the shop does not carryAccepts customers' Loans on SpacesBasket size holds without the shop running a tab

The last row matters. Many Port Harcourt shopkeepers already sell on credit to people they know, and many have lost money doing it. A tab book is the shop lending its own stock. Accepting a customer's own credit line is a different arrangement.

Supplier runs and stock costs

Most independent shops in Port Harcourt restock from a mix of distributors who deliver and wholesale buying trips to the markets. Each trip has a hidden cost: the owner's time away from the till, keke or van hire, and stock damaged on the way back along a flooded road. Count those costs when you compare a cheaper market price with a distributor who delivers to your door in Rumuibekwe or Eliozu.

  • Keep a reorder list by day of the week, so the run to Oil Mill or Mile One covers several lines at once.
  • Ask distributors for a fixed delivery day; it makes stock-outs easier to predict.
  • Check expiry dates on delivery, not when a customer complains.
  • In the wettest weeks, raise stock of slow-perishing staples a little, in case deliveries slip.
  • Record shrinkage every week: damaged, expired and missing items, valued at cost.

Example only. A mini-mart writes off ₦35,000 a month in expired yoghurt, bread and broken eggs. Halving that by ordering perishables twice a week instead of once saves ₦210,000 a year, which is more than many small shops make from a month of promotions.

Opening hours that match the estate

Workers leaving home for Trans-Amadi, Onne and the city centre buy bread and water early; families in Woji and Rumuodara top up after the evening traffic. A shop that opens at 6.30am and closes at 9pm catches both. Write the hours on the door and keep them.

Where Pryme fits

A grocery or retail business that opens a Pryme Business Account can join Spaces and reach customers who hold Loans on Spaces. Those loans are lent by Solid Allianze MFB to the customer, the customer sees and accepts the full agreement before anything is drawn, and the money can only be spent with Spaces merchants. You are selling to a paying customer, not lending. Ask Pryme about merchant terms through /p/contact, and see how to join Spaces as a merchant for the steps. If you sell online, bank-transfer checkout costs 0.5%, capped at ₦2,000.

Questions people ask

How do I get more customers for my supermarket in Port Harcourt?

Pick a clear catchment, keep weekday staples in stock without fail, offer estate delivery in the rainy season and take every common payment method. Joining Spaces adds shoppers who hold Loans on Spaces.

Is it better to open near Mile One or in an estate?

Near the big markets you compete on price with traders who buy in bulk. In an estate you compete on convenience and opening hours, which suits most small supermarkets better.

Can I sell on credit without running a tab book?

Yes. If a customer holds Loans on Spaces, they spend their own credit line from Solid Allianze MFB with you, and you are paid as a normal sale. Ask Pryme for merchant terms.

Which PHED band is my shop on?

Your band depends on the feeder that supplies your premises and is shown on your PHED bill or through PHED's customer channels. It tells you how many hours of supply to plan around.
