Questions

The things people ask us first.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives people and businesses in Nigeria one account that holds Naira alongside dollars, pounds and euros, and a set of agents that do the running of it — keeping the books, chasing what is owed, answering customers and paying bills. Nothing leaves an account without the owner’s approval.

Can I hold dollars, pounds and euros in a Pryme account?

Yes. A Pryme account holds Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros side by side on one ledger, each with its own account details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area. You can swap between them at a rate you set, and every currency has its own statement.

What is Spaces?

Spaces is available in Nigeria. It gives a shopper money to spend that can only be spent with a participating business. The business is paid into its Naira account whether or not the shopper repays, because Pryme carries the credit. For the business it is free to join, there is nothing monthly, and the customer’s identity is never shown — only a reference and what it is worth.

What do the agents on a Pryme Business Account do?

Five agents come with the account. The Chief of Staff runs the week and keeps what is stuck moving. Finance watches the money and keeps the books as you trade. Compliance keeps the filings on time and screens what moves. Sales chases what you are owed. Customer Support answers your customers and follows up. Each has a job description, a budget and a ceiling you set, and each one proposes rather than acts — nothing leaves the account without your signature.

How does Pryme Pay work?

Pryme Pay takes payments on your own site or on a checkout page you control. The buyer is given a one-time account number and transfers to it from any bank app or by USSD — no card, no OTP, nothing to type in. The money lands in the same account your agents are running, already matched to the order and already in your books.

What are Savings Boxes?

Savings Boxes are separate pots inside a Pryme account, held in Naira. Flexible Boxes can be withdrawn at any time, Fixed Boxes hold to a date, Investment Boxes hold for longer, and Interest-free Boxes earn nothing by design. A business can use them to ring-fence payroll and the tax it withholds, so that money cannot be spent by accident.

Who holds my money, and is it protected?

Pryme is a financial technology company, not a bank. Accounts and deposits are provided by Solid Allianze Microfinance Bank Limited, which is licensed by the Central Bank of Nigeria and is a member of the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation.

Can I build on Pryme?

Yes. Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives you one account that holds US dollars, pounds sterling and euros beside Naira, with an assistant that runs the account for you and asks before anything moves. Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, and further markets open as each licence lands.

Can I open a Pryme account from outside Nigeria?

Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, subject to verification and approval. Foreign-currency balances are held and converted inside that account, so you can hold, receive and swap dollars, pounds and euros wherever you are.

Which currencies can I hold with Pryme?

Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros, side by side on one ledger. Each has its own details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area — and each has its own statement.

How do I send money to Nigeria with Pryme?

Swap at a rate you set rather than the rate of the day, then send to any Pryme username or to a Nigerian bank account. There is no fee to send to another Pryme account.

What does the assistant do?

Eva is the assistant inside the Pryme app. She opens accounts, moves money, saves toward your goals, pays what is due and follows up what is owed to you — and asks you before anything moves.

What is Pryme Rails?

Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

Life in Port Harcourt

How to start a restaurant or eatery in Port Harcourt

From a buka in Trans-Amadi to a sit-down restaurant in GRA: the registrations, state and council charges, power and staffing a Port Harcourt eatery needs.

The short answer

Starting a restaurant in Port Harcourt means registering the business, registering with RIRS, clearing your local council's food-premises requirements and a RISAA sign permit, and following national food-safety rules. Decide early whether you are serving the weekday lunch crowd in business areas or evening diners in residential districts, because that choice drives rent, hours and staffing.

Pick your customer before your premises

Port Harcourt eateries tend to fall into two camps. Some feed workers at lunchtime in commercial districts such as Trans-Amadi, Old GRA and around the Aba Road corridor; they need speed, a short menu and enough seats or takeaway packs to clear a queue in an hour. Others serve families and groups in the evenings and at weekends in areas such as GRA Phase II, Woji and Rumuola, where comfort, parking and a reliable generator matter more.

The choice affects more than décor. A lunchtime buka can close by late afternoon, while an evening restaurant has to think about how staff and customers get home. Rivers State Police have kept a statewide restriction on tricycle movement from 10pm, so if your customers and staff depend on keke, a late close may cost you both.

The national rules for food businesses, including when NAFDAC registration applies, are covered in our guide to starting a restaurant in Nigeria. This article focuses on what is different in Port Harcourt.

What is different in Port Harcourt

Council and state charges

Restaurants are visible, cash-handling businesses, which makes them a target for collectors. In the Stakeholder Democracy Network's 2024 study of Rivers businesses, more than half of respondents said they had been harmed in some way by a tax collector, and nearly one in four reported property being seized. The study also found that only 8% of businesses used the state's digital payment portal, with most still paying in cash. Paying through official channels and filing every receipt is your best protection.

Power and gas

Kitchens draw a lot of power. PHED supplies Port Harcourt, and supply varies by feeder and area. Run cooking on gas where you can, keep refrigeration on a backup supply, and size your generator or inverter for the cold room, lights and fans, not the whole building. Keep your PHED bills; if they are wrong, complain in writing to PHED and then, if needed, to NERC's Port Harcourt Forum Office in Rumuogba.

Waste

Rivers State has a waste management agency and has, at times, used task forces for sanitation enforcement. Agree with your landlord how refuse is collected and who pays, and keep the receipts. Do not leave bags on the roadside: it invites fines and loses you customers.

A worked example: lunchtime eatery in Trans-Amadi

Example figures, for illustration only. A 30-seat eatery sells 120 plates a day at an average of ₦3,000, five days a week: ₦1,800,000 a week in sales. Food cost at 40% is ₦720,000. Staff, gas, fuel, rent and charges come to ₦650,000 a week. That leaves ₦430,000 before tax and repairs. Now assume one in five weekdays has heavy rain that halves trade, which is common in the long rainy season: weekly sales fall to roughly ₦1,620,000 and profit drops by about a third. Plan your cash for the wet months, not the dry ones.

Staff and hygiene basics

  • Hire cooks with references you can check and agree trial periods in writing.
  • Keep a simple daily hygiene checklist: hand washing, surface cleaning, cold-room temperature, waste removal.
  • Separate cash handling from cooking. One person takes payments; others cook and serve.
  • Confirm transfers on your own banking app before food leaves the counter, not on a customer's screenshot. Our guide to confirming transfers before releasing goods explains how.

Your first 30 days

Most new eateries lose money in the first month while the menu, portions and staffing settle. Use that month to learn rather than to expand.

  1. Week one: open with a short menu of dishes your cooks already make well. Record what sells by the hour.
  2. Week two: drop the two slowest dishes and adjust portions so plate cost stays where you planned it.
  3. Week three: test delivery or takeaway packs for nearby offices and estates, using your own rider or a trusted service.
  4. Week four: review every charge you have paid since opening, check each has a receipt, and set aside cash for the next demand notice.
  5. End of month: compare actual sales and costs with your plan, and decide whether to change hours before you change anything else.

Keep a simple daily sheet of sales, food purchases, gas and fuel. After 30 days you will know your real food cost, which matters more than any estimate made before opening.

Where Pryme fits

A Pryme Business Account gives the restaurant its own account, transfer collection and a bank-transfer checkout at 0.5% capped at ₦2,000, plus agents that prepare supplier payments and reconciliations for you to approve. Eateries and restaurants are a Spaces sector and Spaces is available in Port Harcourt, so a restaurant that joins can be found by customers holding Loans on Spaces. Ask Pryme about merchant terms via contact.

Questions people ask

What licence do I need to open a restaurant in Port Harcourt?

Register the business with CAC, register with RIRS for state taxes, get your council's food-premises clearance and a RISAA sign permit. NAFDAC registration applies to food you package for retail sale.

Can I run a food business from home in Port Harcourt?

Many people start that way. Check what your council requires for food sold to the public, and follow national food-safety and NAFDAC rules if you package food for shops.

What time do keke stop running in Port Harcourt?

Rivers State Police have kept a restriction on tricycle movement from 10pm statewide, so plan staff closing times and customer transport accordingly.

How do I avoid fake levy collectors at my restaurant?

Ask for identification and a written bill naming the agency, pay through RIRS or council channels, and keep every receipt. Do not pay cash to individuals without an official receipt.
