Questions

The things people ask us first.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives people and businesses in Nigeria one account that holds Naira alongside dollars, pounds and euros, and a set of agents that do the running of it — keeping the books, chasing what is owed, answering customers and paying bills. Nothing leaves an account without the owner’s approval.

Can I hold dollars, pounds and euros in a Pryme account?

Yes. A Pryme account holds Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros side by side on one ledger, each with its own account details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area. You can swap between them at a rate you set, and every currency has its own statement.

What is Spaces?

Spaces is available in Nigeria. It gives a shopper money to spend that can only be spent with a participating business. The business is paid into its Naira account whether or not the shopper repays, because Pryme carries the credit. For the business it is free to join, there is nothing monthly, and the customer’s identity is never shown — only a reference and what it is worth.

What do the agents on a Pryme Business Account do?

Five agents come with the account. The Chief of Staff runs the week and keeps what is stuck moving. Finance watches the money and keeps the books as you trade. Compliance keeps the filings on time and screens what moves. Sales chases what you are owed. Customer Support answers your customers and follows up. Each has a job description, a budget and a ceiling you set, and each one proposes rather than acts — nothing leaves the account without your signature.

How does Pryme Pay work?

Pryme Pay takes payments on your own site or on a checkout page you control. The buyer is given a one-time account number and transfers to it from any bank app or by USSD — no card, no OTP, nothing to type in. The money lands in the same account your agents are running, already matched to the order and already in your books.

What are Savings Boxes?

Savings Boxes are separate pots inside a Pryme account, held in Naira. Flexible Boxes can be withdrawn at any time, Fixed Boxes hold to a date, Investment Boxes hold for longer, and Interest-free Boxes earn nothing by design. A business can use them to ring-fence payroll and the tax it withholds, so that money cannot be spent by accident.

Who holds my money, and is it protected?

Pryme is a financial technology company, not a bank. Accounts and deposits are provided by Solid Allianze Microfinance Bank Limited, which is licensed by the Central Bank of Nigeria and is a member of the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation.

Can I build on Pryme?

Yes. Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives you one account that holds US dollars, pounds sterling and euros beside Naira, with an assistant that runs the account for you and asks before anything moves. Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, and further markets open as each licence lands.

Can I open a Pryme account from outside Nigeria?

Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, subject to verification and approval. Foreign-currency balances are held and converted inside that account, so you can hold, receive and swap dollars, pounds and euros wherever you are.

Which currencies can I hold with Pryme?

Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros, side by side on one ledger. Each has its own details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area — and each has its own statement.

How do I send money to Nigeria with Pryme?

Swap at a rate you set rather than the rate of the day, then send to any Pryme username or to a Nigerian bank account. There is no fee to send to another Pryme account.

What does the assistant do?

Eva is the assistant inside the Pryme app. She opens accounts, moves money, saves toward your goals, pays what is due and follows up what is owed to you — and asks you before anything moves.

What is Pryme Rails?

Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

Stanbic IBTC Dollar Fund: how it works

The Stanbic IBTC Dollar Fund holds mainly Eurobonds, starts at $100 and has a 182-day minimum holding period. Fees, redemption and risks.

The short answer

The Stanbic IBTC Dollar Fund is an open-ended dollar mutual fund that holds at least 70% in high-quality Eurobonds, up to 30% in short-term dollar deposits and up to 10% in approved dollar equities. It starts at $100, charges a 1.5% management fee, and redeeming within 182 days costs 20% of the income earned; redemptions are paid within 3 working days online or 5 at a branch.

The fund at a glance

Stanbic IBTC Asset Management launched the fund in January 2017. Its page states the aim as "currency diversification, income generation, and stable growth in USD". All figures below are from that page, checked in October 2026.

What it holds

Asset classLimit
High-quality EurobondsAt least 70%
Short-term USD depositsUp to 30%

Eurobonds are dollar bonds, and the DMO notes that buying them directly usually needs a minimum lot of about US$200,000. A fund like this lets you hold a slice from $100 (see Nigeria's dollar bond and Eurobonds). The trade-off is that the fund's unit price moves with bond prices, so returns are not fixed. The page does not publish a yield; ask Stanbic IBTC for the latest factsheet or return figures.

Note the "Aggressive" label. Stanbic rates its naira money market fund "Conservative"; the dollar fund's bond holdings and small equity allowance give it more price movement.

How to invest

  1. New investors fill in a subscription form at any Stanbic IBTC branch, with a passport photograph, a government-issued ID and proof of address showing your name.
  2. No payment is needed at that stage.
  3. The account is opened within one business day, and your e-account number is emailed to you.
  4. Transfer the amount to the designated account, quoting your e-account number as the reference.

Existing investors transfer to their personalised e-account number online. The page does not say whether naira is accepted and converted; plan on paying in dollars from a domiciliary account, and ask if you want to pay in naira.

Redeeming

  • Online (web or app): paid to your nominated bank account within 3 working days. Daily online limit $5,000. Needs a signed Consent Form and Agreement; individual and joint accounts only.
  • Branch: submit a Redemption Form at any branch; paid within 5 working days.
  • You can redeem part or all at any time, subject to the holding-period charge.

Worked example: the holding period and the online limit

Example only. You invest $5,000 and after 120 days the fund has earned $150 of income on your units. Redeeming now, inside the 182 days, costs 20% of that income: $30. Waiting until day 183 avoids it.

Later you want to redeem $12,000. Online, the $5,000 daily limit means three requests over three days ($5,000, $5,000, $2,000), each paid within 3 working days. A single branch Redemption Form covers the whole amount in up to 5 working days.

Costs in context

The page lists a 1.5% management fee and a 3.5% expense ratio but does not explain how the two relate. An expense ratio usually expresses a fund's total running costs as a share of its assets. Example only: on $1,000 held for a year, 3.5% is $35. If the fund's assets earn 7% ($70) before costs, about $35, or 3.5%, would be left for you. Ask Stanbic IBTC how the expense ratio is applied and what the fund has actually returned after costs.

Dollar fund versus Stanbic's naira money market fund

Dollar FundMoney Market Fund (naira)
Minimum$100₦5,000
HoldsMainly EurobondsMoney market instruments (T-bills, CP, BAs)
Risk labelAggressiveConservative
Minimum holding period182 days30 days

Online redemptionWithin 3 working days, $5,000 a dayWithin 2 working days, ₦2,500,000 a day
Management fee1.5%1.5% p.a.

The two do different jobs. The money market fund is a place for naira you may need within weeks; the dollar fund is for money you want held in dollars for months or years.

Risks to weigh

  • Bond prices: when dollar yields rise or confidence in Nigeria falls, Eurobond prices drop and so does the unit price.
  • Credit: a fund that is mostly Eurobonds depends on the issuers of those bonds continuing to pay; ask Stanbic IBTC which issuers the fund holds.
  • Currency direction: in naira terms, your holding gains if the naira weakens and loses if it strengthens.
  • Not a deposit: fund units are not bank deposits and are not covered by deposit insurance.

Who it suits

Savers who want dollar exposure from a small starting amount and can leave the money for at least six months, preferably longer. It does not suit emergency money. Compare with the ARM Eurobond Fund, which starts at $1,000, and see how to buy dollar mutual funds.

Where Pryme fits

Pryme is not a fund manager. A Pryme account can hold dollars you are setting aside, with local USD account details; see multicurrency.

Questions people ask
