Questions

The things people ask us first.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives people and businesses in Nigeria one account that holds Naira alongside dollars, pounds and euros, and a set of agents that do the running of it — keeping the books, chasing what is owed, answering customers and paying bills. Nothing leaves an account without the owner’s approval.

Can I hold dollars, pounds and euros in a Pryme account?

Yes. A Pryme account holds Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros side by side on one ledger, each with its own account details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area. You can swap between them at a rate you set, and every currency has its own statement.

What is Spaces?

Spaces is available in Nigeria. It gives a shopper money to spend that can only be spent with a participating business. The business is paid into its Naira account whether or not the shopper repays, because Pryme carries the credit. For the business it is free to join, there is nothing monthly, and the customer’s identity is never shown — only a reference and what it is worth.

What do the agents on a Pryme Business Account do?

Five agents come with the account. The Chief of Staff runs the week and keeps what is stuck moving. Finance watches the money and keeps the books as you trade. Compliance keeps the filings on time and screens what moves. Sales chases what you are owed. Customer Support answers your customers and follows up. Each has a job description, a budget and a ceiling you set, and each one proposes rather than acts — nothing leaves the account without your signature.

How does Pryme Pay work?

Pryme Pay takes payments on your own site or on a checkout page you control. The buyer is given a one-time account number and transfers to it from any bank app or by USSD — no card, no OTP, nothing to type in. The money lands in the same account your agents are running, already matched to the order and already in your books.

What are Savings Boxes?

Savings Boxes are separate pots inside a Pryme account, held in Naira. Flexible Boxes can be withdrawn at any time, Fixed Boxes hold to a date, Investment Boxes hold for longer, and Interest-free Boxes earn nothing by design. A business can use them to ring-fence payroll and the tax it withholds, so that money cannot be spent by accident.

Who holds my money, and is it protected?

Pryme is a financial technology company, not a bank. Accounts and deposits are provided by Solid Allianze Microfinance Bank Limited, which is licensed by the Central Bank of Nigeria and is a member of the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation.

Can I build on Pryme?

Yes. Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives you one account that holds US dollars, pounds sterling and euros beside Naira, with an assistant that runs the account for you and asks before anything moves. Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, and further markets open as each licence lands.

Can I open a Pryme account from outside Nigeria?

Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, subject to verification and approval. Foreign-currency balances are held and converted inside that account, so you can hold, receive and swap dollars, pounds and euros wherever you are.

Which currencies can I hold with Pryme?

Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros, side by side on one ledger. Each has its own details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area — and each has its own statement.

How do I send money to Nigeria with Pryme?

Swap at a rate you set rather than the rate of the day, then send to any Pryme username or to a Nigerian bank account. There is no fee to send to another Pryme account.

What does the assistant do?

Eva is the assistant inside the Pryme app. She opens accounts, moves money, saves toward your goals, pays what is due and follows up what is owed to you — and asks you before anything moves.

What is Pryme Rails?

Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

Shop and signage levies in Enugu: what ESIRS and the LG collect

What Enugu shop owners pay: the ₦36,000 consolidated market levy, signage and premises fees, LG tollage, ESWAMA, and how to check a collector is real.

The short answer

Enugu's revenue service said in August 2025 that market traders pay a consolidated ₦36,000 a year covering ESWAMA sanitation, signage fee, local government tollage and business premises levy, paid between January and March, while street-based vendors pay ₦30,000 a year with ESWAMA charged separately. Shops outside markets, and larger signs, can be assessed differently, so confirm your category with ESIRS before paying anyone.

Who collects what

Small businesses in Enugu deal with three sets of collectors, and the overlap is where most confusion and over-charging happens:

Enugu State Internal Revenue Service (ESIRS)
Personal income tax under direct assessment for the self-employed, and state levies including the consolidated trader levy.
Local government
Tollage, market or shop rates and some permits, depending on the LGA (Enugu North, Enugu East, Enugu South and others).
ESWAMA
The Enugu State Waste Management Authority, for waste and environmental sanitation charges.

The consolidated levy explained

At a media briefing reported by Nairametrics on 8 August 2025, ESIRS chairman Emmanuel Nnamani described the regime for traders:

WhoAnnual amountWhat it coversWhen
Market traders₦36,000ESWAMA sanitation, signage fee, LG tollage, business premises levyPay January to March; enforcement after 31 March
Street-based vendors₦30,000As stated by ESIRS; ESWAMA charged separatelyAnnual
Transport operators (okada, keke, minibus, tankers, trucks)Daily ticketDaily ticketing system; no amount statedDaily

He said that a trader who pays the consolidated levy in the window owes nothing else for that year. That is the point to hold on to: if you have paid the ₦36,000 and someone later demands a separate 'signage' or 'tollage' payment for the same year, ask for the legal basis and check with ESIRS.

Shops outside markets and larger signs

The consolidated figure was described for market traders. A shop on a street in New Haven, Ogui Road or Independence Layout, a pharmacy, a salon or a restaurant may be assessed for business premises, signage and waste separately, and a large illuminated sign or billboard is a different matter from a painted shop name. Nairametrics' report does not give those amounts, and no current published schedule was found for this guide. Before paying:

  1. Ask the collector for their ID, the agency they represent and the law or notice that sets the charge.
  2. Ask for a demand notice in writing, with your business name and the amount.
  3. Pay only through the official channel named on the notice, and get an official receipt.
  4. If in doubt, visit or call ESIRS or your LGA revenue office and quote the notice number.
  5. Keep every receipt for the year in one folder; you will be asked for them again.

A worked example of the annual cost

Example only. A provisions shop inside a market and the same owner's second outlet on a street:

Item (example)Market shopStreet shop
Consolidated levy (ESIRS, as stated Aug 2025)₦36,000Not applicable
Premises, signage and LG charges (example assessment)Included₦45,000
ESWAMA waste charge (example)Included₦12,000
Personal income tax (example direct assessment)₦25,000Shared with market shop
Total for the year₦61,000₦57,000

In this example the owner pays ₦61,000 + ₦57,000 = ₦118,000 across both outlets. The street figures are illustrative; your assessment will show the real amounts.

Why this matters and what to keep

ESIRS has said it is pursuing compliance strongly, describing 99% of the informal sector as not remitting taxes when the current leadership arrived. ESWAMA said in July 2025 it was issuing court summons to defaulters for 2023 to 2025 waste fees. Paying on time, in the window, through official channels and with receipts, is cheaper than enforcement.

Common disputes and how to handle them

  • Two collectors for the same thing. A state collector and an LG collector may each claim a sanitation or premises charge. Show the consolidated levy receipt and ask both to confirm with their offices.
  • Charges for a sign you think is exempt. A painted name on your own shopfront and a separate advertising board may be treated differently. Ask for the assessment in writing, with the size or type of sign it is based on.
  • Penalty for late payment. If you missed the January to March window, ask what penalty applies and pay the assessed amount through official channels rather than settling informally on the spot.
  • Shop sealed or goods taken. Ask for the enforcement notice and the officer's details, and go to the agency office with your receipts. Do not pay cash to have a seal removed without an official receipt.

Traders' associations in the main markets often know the current rules and can raise disputes on behalf of members; it is worth knowing who your line or section leader is.

For the wider picture of taxes, power and wages, read doing business in Enugu State.

Where Pryme fits

Keeping levy money aside each month in a business account makes the January to March window easier. The Finance agent on a Pryme Business Account can prepare reminders and payments for a person to approve. See also waste bills in Enugu.

Questions people ask

How much is the shop levy in Enugu?

ESIRS said in August 2025 that market traders pay a consolidated ₦36,000 a year, covering sanitation, signage, LG tollage and business premises levy.

When should Enugu traders pay the consolidated levy?

Between January and March. ESIRS said enforcement follows after 31 March.

Do I pay signage fee separately in Enugu?

Not if you are a market trader who has paid the ₦36,000 consolidated levy for the year, according to ESIRS. Street shops and large signs may be assessed separately.

How do I know a levy collector is genuine?

Ask for ID, a written demand notice and the official payment channel, and check with ESIRS or your LGA before paying.
