Questions

The things people ask us first.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives people and businesses in Nigeria one account that holds Naira alongside dollars, pounds and euros, and a set of agents that do the running of it — keeping the books, chasing what is owed, answering customers and paying bills. Nothing leaves an account without the owner’s approval.

Can I hold dollars, pounds and euros in a Pryme account?

Yes. A Pryme account holds Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros side by side on one ledger, each with its own account details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area. You can swap between them at a rate you set, and every currency has its own statement.

What is Spaces?

Spaces is available in Nigeria. It gives a shopper money to spend that can only be spent with a participating business. The business is paid into its Naira account whether or not the shopper repays, because Pryme carries the credit. For the business it is free to join, there is nothing monthly, and the customer’s identity is never shown — only a reference and what it is worth.

What do the agents on a Pryme Business Account do?

Five agents come with the account. The Chief of Staff runs the week and keeps what is stuck moving. Finance watches the money and keeps the books as you trade. Compliance keeps the filings on time and screens what moves. Sales chases what you are owed. Customer Support answers your customers and follows up. Each has a job description, a budget and a ceiling you set, and each one proposes rather than acts — nothing leaves the account without your signature.

How does Pryme Pay work?

Pryme Pay takes payments on your own site or on a checkout page you control. The buyer is given a one-time account number and transfers to it from any bank app or by USSD — no card, no OTP, nothing to type in. The money lands in the same account your agents are running, already matched to the order and already in your books.

What are Savings Boxes?

Savings Boxes are separate pots inside a Pryme account, held in Naira. Flexible Boxes can be withdrawn at any time, Fixed Boxes hold to a date, Investment Boxes hold for longer, and Interest-free Boxes earn nothing by design. A business can use them to ring-fence payroll and the tax it withholds, so that money cannot be spent by accident.

Who holds my money, and is it protected?

Pryme is a financial technology company, not a bank. Accounts and deposits are provided by Solid Allianze Microfinance Bank Limited, which is licensed by the Central Bank of Nigeria and is a member of the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation.

Can I build on Pryme?

Yes. Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives you one account that holds US dollars, pounds sterling and euros beside Naira, with an assistant that runs the account for you and asks before anything moves. Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, and further markets open as each licence lands.

Can I open a Pryme account from outside Nigeria?

Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, subject to verification and approval. Foreign-currency balances are held and converted inside that account, so you can hold, receive and swap dollars, pounds and euros wherever you are.

Which currencies can I hold with Pryme?

Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros, side by side on one ledger. Each has its own details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area — and each has its own statement.

How do I send money to Nigeria with Pryme?

Swap at a rate you set rather than the rate of the day, then send to any Pryme username or to a Nigerian bank account. There is no fee to send to another Pryme account.

What does the assistant do?

Eva is the assistant inside the Pryme app. She opens accounts, moves money, saves toward your goals, pays what is due and follows up what is owed to you — and asks you before anything moves.

What is Pryme Rails?

Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

Make money

Side hustles for teachers in Nigeria

Lessons, exam coaching, online tutoring and curriculum writing for teachers, with the public-service rules on private work.

The short answer

Teachers in Nigeria earn extra through home lessons, exam coaching, holiday classes, online tutoring and writing lesson notes for private schools. Public-school teachers are public officers, and the Constitution, as quoted in a 2013 Head of Service circular, bars them from running a private business other than farming, so get written guidance before you charge for lessons.

Teachers already have the most saleable skill

Parents in Nigerian cities spend heavily on extra lessons, exam coaching and holiday classes, and they prefer someone who teaches the subject every day. A teacher's side hustle is usually the same skill sold to a different buyer: a family, an exam candidate, a private school, an education company or an online platform. The questions that decide whether you can do it are your employer's rules and your time.

The rules first: public and private schools differ

Teachers in public schools

Teachers employed by government are public officers. A Head of Service circular of 10 June 2013, published by the Bureau of Public Service Reforms, quotes the Fifth Schedule of the 1999 Constitution: a public officer shall not engage in the management or running of any private business, profession or trade, though nothing prevents a public officer from farming. The circular says breach is misconduct under the Public Service Rules.

What that means for a teacher giving lessons after school is a matter of interpretation. Teaching a few children in the evening is not obviously running a business, while owning and managing a tutorial centre or private school plainly is. State teachers are also subject to their state's civil service and teaching service board rules. Practical guidance:

  • Never charge your own pupils for lessons that cover what you should teach in class, and never make extra lessons a condition of good marks. That is the conduct that draws complaints.
  • Keep paid work outside school hours and off school premises unless the school has approved it.
  • Do not manage or register a business that competes with your school without written approval.
  • When unsure, ask your head teacher or the teaching service board in writing.

Teachers in private schools

Your contract governs. Some private schools forbid teaching their own pupils privately or working for a nearby competitor; others welcome it. Read the clauses on outside work and confidentiality before you advertise.

Your TRCN licence

The Teachers Registration Council of Nigeria (TRCN) keeps a public register that anyone can search on its website, and runs a mandatory Professional Qualifying Examination for people with teaching qualifications. Parents and schools increasingly check the register, so a current registration is a selling point for private work.

The hustles, and what they pay

HustleWho paysWhen you workNotes
Home lessonsParentsEvenings, SaturdaysPrice per child per month; travel eats time
Exam coaching (WAEC, NECO, JAMB, Common Entrance)Candidates, parentsWeekends, holidaysSeasonal demand; group classes raise hourly income

Online platforms

Two platforms publish their terms openly. Preply's tutor page says no certification is required, tutors set their own hourly rate, Preply takes 100% of the trial lesson with each new student and then a commission that starts at 33% and falls to 18% with hours taught. It also states that English tutors average $15–25 an hour, which is Preply's own claim. Cambly's tutor page lists pay of $0.17 a minute ($10.20 an hour) and $0.20 a minute on Cambly Kids, but also says it is temporarily limiting new tutor sign-ups and does not state which countries are eligible. Check both pages for current terms.

Worked example: evening lessons

Example only. Mr Bello teaches mathematics in a private secondary school in Abuja whose contract allows outside tutoring of non-pupils. He tutors four SS3 students from other schools, twice a week for an hour, at ₦25,000 per student per month (his own rate).

  • Income: 4 × ₦25,000 = ₦100,000 a month
  • Time: 4 students × 2 hours × 4 weeks = 32 hours if taught separately
  • Transport: ₦1,500 a visit × 32 visits = ₦48,000

Net ₦52,000 for 32 hours, about ₦1,625 an hour. If he teaches all four together at one student's home, two hours a week becomes 8 hours a month and transport falls to 8 visits (₦12,000), so net rises to ₦88,000 for 8 hours, ₦11,000 an hour. Grouping, not raising prices, is usually what makes lessons worth the evening.

What to check first

  1. Read your employment terms or ask your head teacher about outside work.
  2. Keep your TRCN registration current.
  3. Do not tutor your own pupils for pay unless your school explicitly allows it.
  4. Price per month and collect at the start of the month.
  5. Keep records; lesson income is taxable personal income (see tax on side hustle income).

For more on online work, see online tutoring jobs for Nigerians.

Where Pryme fits

Parents paying monthly lesson fees appreciate a receipt. Pryme customers can issue regular or verifiable receipts through our VerifyDoc.ai partnership. If you are paid by a foreign platform, a multicurrency account can receive USD, GBP or EUR and you choose when to convert with Swap.

Questions people ask

Can government teachers do private lessons in Nigeria?

Public officers may not run a private business, profession or trade other than farming, per the Constitution as quoted in a 2013 Head of Service circular. Occasional tutoring is a grey area; get written guidance from your school or teaching service board.

How much do lesson teachers charge in Nigeria?

There is no official rate. Teachers set monthly fees per child based on subject, level, city and travel; group classes usually earn more per hour.

Which online tutoring sites pay Nigerian teachers?

Preply and Cambly publish their terms, but Cambly says it is temporarily limiting new tutor sign-ups and neither page states country eligibility. Check each platform before applying.

Do I need TRCN to teach privately?

TRCN keeps the public register of teachers and runs the qualifying exam. Being on the register helps when parents or schools check you.
