Questions

The things people ask us first.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives people and businesses in Nigeria one account that holds Naira alongside dollars, pounds and euros, and a set of agents that do the running of it — keeping the books, chasing what is owed, answering customers and paying bills. Nothing leaves an account without the owner’s approval.

Can I hold dollars, pounds and euros in a Pryme account?

Yes. A Pryme account holds Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros side by side on one ledger, each with its own account details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area. You can swap between them at a rate you set, and every currency has its own statement.

What is Spaces?

Spaces is available in Nigeria. It gives a shopper money to spend that can only be spent with a participating business. The business is paid into its Naira account whether or not the shopper repays, because Pryme carries the credit. For the business it is free to join, there is nothing monthly, and the customer’s identity is never shown — only a reference and what it is worth.

What do the agents on a Pryme Business Account do?

Five agents come with the account. The Chief of Staff runs the week and keeps what is stuck moving. Finance watches the money and keeps the books as you trade. Compliance keeps the filings on time and screens what moves. Sales chases what you are owed. Customer Support answers your customers and follows up. Each has a job description, a budget and a ceiling you set, and each one proposes rather than acts — nothing leaves the account without your signature.

How does Pryme Pay work?

Pryme Pay takes payments on your own site or on a checkout page you control. The buyer is given a one-time account number and transfers to it from any bank app or by USSD — no card, no OTP, nothing to type in. The money lands in the same account your agents are running, already matched to the order and already in your books.

What are Savings Boxes?

Savings Boxes are separate pots inside a Pryme account, held in Naira. Flexible Boxes can be withdrawn at any time, Fixed Boxes hold to a date, Investment Boxes hold for longer, and Interest-free Boxes earn nothing by design. A business can use them to ring-fence payroll and the tax it withholds, so that money cannot be spent by accident.

Who holds my money, and is it protected?

Pryme is a financial technology company, not a bank. Accounts and deposits are provided by Solid Allianze Microfinance Bank Limited, which is licensed by the Central Bank of Nigeria and is a member of the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation.

Can I build on Pryme?

Yes. Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives you one account that holds US dollars, pounds sterling and euros beside Naira, with an assistant that runs the account for you and asks before anything moves. Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, and further markets open as each licence lands.

Can I open a Pryme account from outside Nigeria?

Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, subject to verification and approval. Foreign-currency balances are held and converted inside that account, so you can hold, receive and swap dollars, pounds and euros wherever you are.

Which currencies can I hold with Pryme?

Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros, side by side on one ledger. Each has its own details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area — and each has its own statement.

How do I send money to Nigeria with Pryme?

Swap at a rate you set rather than the rate of the day, then send to any Pryme username or to a Nigerian bank account. There is no fee to send to another Pryme account.

What does the assistant do?

Eva is the assistant inside the Pryme app. She opens accounts, moves money, saves toward your goals, pays what is due and follows up what is owed to you — and asks you before anything moves.

What is Pryme Rails?

Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

How to set private school fees in Nigeria without losing parents

How Nigerian private school proprietors can set and raise fees: true cost per pupil, staff pay, levies, explaining increases and keeping parents.

The short answer

Set private school fees from your real cost per pupil, staff, rent, power, materials and a reserve, divided by realistic enrolment, then add a margin and compare with similar schools nearby. Raise fees in planned, explained steps announced a term ahead, keep the fee schedule itemised, and offer structured payment options so good families are not priced out.

Know your true cost per pupil

Many proprietors set fees by looking at the school down the road. That is a useful check, but it is a poor starting point, because your rent, staff and class sizes are not theirs. Start with a full year's costs.

  • Teaching and non-teaching staff pay, including any pension and statutory deductions.
  • Rent or mortgage on the premises, and maintenance.
  • Power: grid bills, generator fuel, solar maintenance.
  • Learning materials, exercise books, laboratory and ICT costs.
  • Exams, registration and government levies your school pays.
  • Insurance, security, cleaning and transport if you run buses.
  • A reserve for repairs and the long vacation, when income stops but some costs continue.

Divide the total by the number of pupils you can expect to enrol, not by full capacity. A new school might plan on 60% to 70% of its places being filled.

Staff pay is the biggest line

In most private schools teacher and support salaries are the largest single cost. The national minimum wage is ₦70,000 a month under the 2024 amendment, and it is now due for review every three years, so the next review could raise your wage bill again. Build expected pay increases into your fee plan instead of being surprised by them.

Good teachers are also the main reason parents stay. Underpaying them to keep fees low tends to raise staff turnover, which parents notice quickly.

Itemise the fee schedule

Parents are more willing to pay when they can see what they are paying for. The FCCPC's guidance requires information about services to be given in plain language, prices to be fully disclosed, and the displayed price to match what is actually paid. For a school, that means a single fee schedule that shows everything, not a tuition figure followed by surprise charges.

ItemChargedNotes

Bus service, lunch, clubsOptionalParents opt in

Separate compulsory and optional items. Parents resent being charged for a bus they do not use.

Raising fees without losing families

Costs in Nigeria rise every year, so fees must too. How you raise them matters as much as by how much.

  1. Announce increases at least a term before they take effect, ideally before the end of the third term.
  2. Explain the reason in a short letter: salaries, power, materials, improvements.
  3. Phase large increases over two or three terms instead of one jump.
  4. Protect existing families with a smaller increase than new entrants, if you can afford it.
  5. Offer a sibling discount and an early-payment discount, both clearly stated.

Compare with similar schools

Once you have a cost-based figure, compare with three to five schools that serve a similar community and offer similar facilities and results. If you are much higher, be clear what parents get for the difference. If you are much lower, you may be under-recovering and risking quality.

Discounts and scholarships

Discounts are part of your pricing, not an afterthought. Every sibling discount, staff-child place and scholarship reduces income per pupil, so count them in the cost calculation. Write a short policy that says who qualifies, how much they receive and for how long, and apply it consistently. Unwritten discounts given to some families and not others cause more complaints than the fee level itself. Review the total value of discounts each session; if it has grown much faster than enrolment, your effective fee is lower than the schedule suggests.

Finally, keep a record of why families leave. If exit conversations keep mentioning fees, test whether a payment plan, rather than a lower fee, would have kept them.

Make the fees payable

Many parents can afford the year's fees but not the lump sum at resumption. Offering a structured payment plan, with dates written down, keeps those families. Running your own credit, though, means chasing debts and teaching children whose fees are unpaid. For the parent's side of this, see paying school fees in instalments.

Tax rules matter as the school grows. From January 2026, a company with annual turnover of ₦100 million or less and fixed assets below ₦250 million counts as a small company for 0% company income tax, but still has to file and keep records.

Where Pryme fits

Schools are a sector supported on Spaces. A private school with a Pryme Business Account can join Spaces and reach parents who hold Loans on Spaces, credit lent by Solid Allianze MFB to the parent that can only be spent with Spaces merchants. The parent accepts the full agreement before anything is drawn. Read pay-later for private schools, collect fees by virtual account per pupil, and ask Pryme about merchant terms.

Questions people ask

How do I calculate school fees for my private school?

Add up a full year's costs, divide by realistic enrolment rather than full capacity, add a margin, then compare with similar schools nearby.

How much should a private school increase fees each year?

Enough to cover real cost rises, especially salaries and power. Announce it a term ahead, explain it, and phase large increases over several terms.

Can a private school add extra charges during the term?

FCCPC guidance expects prices to be fully disclosed upfront. Put all compulsory charges on the fee schedule at the start of the term.

Should private schools offer instalment payments?

Many families can afford the year's fees but not the lump sum, so a structured plan helps keep them. Using a lender for pay-later avoids the school carrying the debt.
