Questions

The things people ask us first.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives people and businesses in Nigeria one account that holds Naira alongside dollars, pounds and euros, and a set of agents that do the running of it — keeping the books, chasing what is owed, answering customers and paying bills. Nothing leaves an account without the owner’s approval.

Can I hold dollars, pounds and euros in a Pryme account?

Yes. A Pryme account holds Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros side by side on one ledger, each with its own account details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area. You can swap between them at a rate you set, and every currency has its own statement.

What is Spaces?

Spaces is available in Nigeria. It gives a shopper money to spend that can only be spent with a participating business. The business is paid into its Naira account whether or not the shopper repays, because Pryme carries the credit. For the business it is free to join, there is nothing monthly, and the customer’s identity is never shown — only a reference and what it is worth.

What do the agents on a Pryme Business Account do?

Five agents come with the account. The Chief of Staff runs the week and keeps what is stuck moving. Finance watches the money and keeps the books as you trade. Compliance keeps the filings on time and screens what moves. Sales chases what you are owed. Customer Support answers your customers and follows up. Each has a job description, a budget and a ceiling you set, and each one proposes rather than acts — nothing leaves the account without your signature.

How does Pryme Pay work?

Pryme Pay takes payments on your own site or on a checkout page you control. The buyer is given a one-time account number and transfers to it from any bank app or by USSD — no card, no OTP, nothing to type in. The money lands in the same account your agents are running, already matched to the order and already in your books.

What are Savings Boxes?

Savings Boxes are separate pots inside a Pryme account, held in Naira. Flexible Boxes can be withdrawn at any time, Fixed Boxes hold to a date, Investment Boxes hold for longer, and Interest-free Boxes earn nothing by design. A business can use them to ring-fence payroll and the tax it withholds, so that money cannot be spent by accident.

Who holds my money, and is it protected?

Pryme is a financial technology company, not a bank. Accounts and deposits are provided by Solid Allianze Microfinance Bank Limited, which is licensed by the Central Bank of Nigeria and is a member of the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation.

Can I build on Pryme?

Yes. Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives you one account that holds US dollars, pounds sterling and euros beside Naira, with an assistant that runs the account for you and asks before anything moves. Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, and further markets open as each licence lands.

Can I open a Pryme account from outside Nigeria?

Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, subject to verification and approval. Foreign-currency balances are held and converted inside that account, so you can hold, receive and swap dollars, pounds and euros wherever you are.

Which currencies can I hold with Pryme?

Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros, side by side on one ledger. Each has its own details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area — and each has its own statement.

How do I send money to Nigeria with Pryme?

Swap at a rate you set rather than the rate of the day, then send to any Pryme username or to a Nigerian bank account. There is no fee to send to another Pryme account.

What does the assistant do?

Eva is the assistant inside the Pryme app. She opens accounts, moves money, saves toward your goals, pays what is due and follows up what is owed to you — and asks you before anything moves.

What is Pryme Rails?

Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

Sending a large sum to Nigeria: documents and checks

Sending school fees, a land payment or savings home? The documents to prepare, why splitting transfers backfires, and what the receiving bank may ask.

The short answer

To send a large sum to Nigeria safely, use a bank or CBN-licensed operator and prepare evidence of where the money came from and what it is for. Do not split it into small transfers to stay under limits. Nigerian law requires financial institutions to report transfers to or from abroad above US$10,000 to the NFIU, so a large transfer will be noticed. It goes through when it is documented.

What counts as large, and why it gets attention

There is no single 'large' number. Each provider sets its own limits. Taptap Send's Nigeria page, for example, listed per-transfer limits of £99,000 from the UK, US$10,000 per transfer and per day from the US, and CA$3,500 per transfer from Canada when we checked in October 2026. Wise states no maximum on its Nigeria page and offers a fee discount above US$25,000. Compliance attention starts well below those ceilings.

In Nigeria, the Money Laundering (Prevention and Prohibition) Act 2022 requires transfers of funds to or from foreign countries above US$10,000 or its equivalent to be reported in writing to the NFIU and the CBN (and the SEC where relevant) within one day, according to a summary of the Act published on Mondaq in September 2022. The report is made by the financial institution, not by you. The same Act requires suspicious transactions, including those that are 'unjustifiably and unreasonably frequent', to be reported within 24 hours.

Why splitting backfires

Many people try to avoid questions by breaking ₦30 million into dozens of smaller transfers. Repeated transfers just under a provider's limit are the pattern that compliance teams are trained to spot, and the Act treats unreasonably frequent transactions as a reason to file a suspicious transaction report. Splitting can turn a clean, documented transfer into one that looks like an attempt to hide something, and can lead to accounts being restricted while questions are asked. Send in as few transfers as your provider's limits allow, and say what the money is for.

The documents to have ready

On the sending side

  • Proof of source: payslips, employment contract, a business's accounts, a property sale completion statement, an inheritance letter, or savings statements showing the money built up over time.
  • Proof of purpose: school fee invoice, land or house sale agreement, a builder's quotation, a hospital bill.
  • Bank statements showing the money in your own account before you send it; money that has just landed from someone else will draw more questions.

On the Nigerian side

  • A bank account in the recipient's own name, with BVN and NIN linked and at a tier whose limits fit the amount.
  • The recipient's ID and an explanation of the purpose in case the bank calls.
  • Since 1 May 2026, CBN-licensed operators pay remittances in naira, and larger amounts go into bank accounts rather than cash (CBN circular of 24 March 2026, per Udo Udoma & Belo-Osagie).

If the money is meant to stay in dollars, an operator's remittance will not do that; see receiving a remittance in dollars for the bank routes that can credit a domiciliary account.

A worked example

Example only, figures are illustrative. Funmi in Leeds is sending £20,000 towards a plot in Ibeju-Lekki. She sends from her own current account, where her savings have built up over two years, and keeps her payslips and the sale agreement in one folder. The recipient is the seller's company account, not a relative's personal account, so the purpose matches the payee. Once it lands, the seller still has to move money onward, and each electronic transfer of ₦10,000 or more inside Nigeria now carries a ₦50 stamp duty borne by the sender (Nigeria Tax Act 2025, from 1 January 2026). She asks for a written receipt from the seller and keeps her own transfer receipt, which together prove the payment if the deal is ever disputed.

Questions the receiving bank may ask

A Nigerian bank that receives a large inflow, or sees a large amount moved out of an account soon after, may call the account holder. Typical questions are who sent the money, the relationship, and what it is for. A parent receiving school fees or a relative holding money for a building project should be ready to answer calmly and consistently with what the sender told their provider. If the answers do not match, the bank may hold the funds while it checks. Agree the purpose with your recipient before you send, and give them copies of the key documents.

Checks before you press send

  1. Confirm the recipient's account name and bank by phone with the recipient, not from an email; payment-detail fraud often targets large sums.
  2. Check your provider's limit for the amount, and ask its compliance team in advance what it will need.
  3. Check the operator on the CBN's licensed IMTO list.
  4. Send a small test amount first if the account is new to you.
  5. Keep the receipt, the reference and the recipient's acknowledgment; see proof that you sent money home.
  6. Read money transfer scams targeting the diaspora if anyone pressures you to pay quickly.

Where Pryme fits

A Pryme account can be opened from any country and holds NGN, USD, GBP and EUR with local details, so a large sum can stay in its own currency until you swap it at a rate you see first. Any customer can also generate a verifiable receipt or statement through Pryme's partner VerifyDoc.ai, which a seller, lawyer or family member can check is genuine and unaltered. See receipts.

Questions people ask

Is there a limit to how much money I can send to Nigeria?

There is no single national cap; each provider sets limits. Transfers above US$10,000 to or from abroad are reported to the NFIU by the financial institution under the 2022 money laundering Act.

Should I split a big transfer into smaller ones?

No. Repeated small transfers can look suspicious under the Act's frequent-transaction rule. Send in as few transfers as limits allow, with documents.

What documents do I need to send a large amount to Nigeria?

Proof of where the money came from (payslips, sale statements, savings history) and proof of purpose (invoice, sale agreement).

Can I receive a large remittance in cash in Nigeria?

Since 1 May 2026, CBN-licensed operators pay in naira and larger amounts go into bank accounts rather than cash.
