Questions

The things people ask us first.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives people and businesses in Nigeria one account that holds Naira alongside dollars, pounds and euros, and a set of agents that do the running of it — keeping the books, chasing what is owed, answering customers and paying bills. Nothing leaves an account without the owner’s approval.

Can I hold dollars, pounds and euros in a Pryme account?

Yes. A Pryme account holds Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros side by side on one ledger, each with its own account details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area. You can swap between them at a rate you set, and every currency has its own statement.

What is Spaces?

Spaces is available in Nigeria. It gives a shopper money to spend that can only be spent with a participating business. The business is paid into its Naira account whether or not the shopper repays, because Pryme carries the credit. For the business it is free to join, there is nothing monthly, and the customer’s identity is never shown — only a reference and what it is worth.

What do the agents on a Pryme Business Account do?

Five agents come with the account. The Chief of Staff runs the week and keeps what is stuck moving. Finance watches the money and keeps the books as you trade. Compliance keeps the filings on time and screens what moves. Sales chases what you are owed. Customer Support answers your customers and follows up. Each has a job description, a budget and a ceiling you set, and each one proposes rather than acts — nothing leaves the account without your signature.

How does Pryme Pay work?

Pryme Pay takes payments on your own site or on a checkout page you control. The buyer is given a one-time account number and transfers to it from any bank app or by USSD — no card, no OTP, nothing to type in. The money lands in the same account your agents are running, already matched to the order and already in your books.

What are Savings Boxes?

Savings Boxes are separate pots inside a Pryme account, held in Naira. Flexible Boxes can be withdrawn at any time, Fixed Boxes hold to a date, Investment Boxes hold for longer, and Interest-free Boxes earn nothing by design. A business can use them to ring-fence payroll and the tax it withholds, so that money cannot be spent by accident.

Who holds my money, and is it protected?

Pryme is a financial technology company, not a bank. Accounts and deposits are provided by Solid Allianze Microfinance Bank Limited, which is licensed by the Central Bank of Nigeria and is a member of the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation.

Can I build on Pryme?

Yes. Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives you one account that holds US dollars, pounds sterling and euros beside Naira, with an assistant that runs the account for you and asks before anything moves. Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, and further markets open as each licence lands.

Can I open a Pryme account from outside Nigeria?

Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, subject to verification and approval. Foreign-currency balances are held and converted inside that account, so you can hold, receive and swap dollars, pounds and euros wherever you are.

Which currencies can I hold with Pryme?

Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros, side by side on one ledger. Each has its own details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area — and each has its own statement.

How do I send money to Nigeria with Pryme?

Swap at a rate you set rather than the rate of the day, then send to any Pryme username or to a Nigerian bank account. There is no fee to send to another Pryme account.

What does the assistant do?

Eva is the assistant inside the Pryme app. She opens accounts, moves money, saves toward your goals, pays what is due and follows up what is owed to you — and asks you before anything moves.

What is Pryme Rails?

Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

Seasonal food prices: when staples are cheapest in Nigeria

Staple prices in Nigeria follow the farming calendar: they ease after the October–December harvest and peak in the June–September lean season.

The short answer

Grain staples are usually cheapest in Nigeria during and just after the main harvest, October to December, and dearest in the lean season, June to September, when last year's stocks run low. FEWS NET's February 2026 outlook says seasonal increases typically start in January or February, peak in June–September and ease when the harvest starts in late September.

The farming calendar behind prices

Most of Nigeria's grain is rain-fed. Crops are planted with the rains and harvested once they end, so supply arrives in one large wave each year and is drawn down over the following months. Prices tend to follow stocks: plentiful after harvest, scarce before the next one.

FEWS NET, the famine early warning network, describes the pattern in its Nigeria outlook for February to September 2026:

  • The main harvest runs October to December, after the July–September lean season.
  • Seasonal price increases typically begin in January or February and peak during the June–September lean season.
  • Prices decline slightly with the start of the main harvest in late September.
  • Dry-season farming in northern states (maize, rice, sorghum, vegetables) gives a smaller off-season harvest; FEWS NET expected it to bring only marginal market improvement in April and May 2026.

A buying calendar for grains (general pattern)

MonthsTypical price directionWhat it means for buying
Oct–DecEasing as harvest arrivesBest window to buy grains in bulk if you can store them
Jan–MayStarting to rise; brief off-season dip possiblePrices drift up; buy what you need
Jun–SepPeak (lean season)Dearest period; draw on stored stock if you have it

This is a general pattern for grains, not a forecast. Conflict, flooding, fuel and transport costs, import policy and the exchange rate can override it in any year. FEWS NET did not cover yam or beans in that report, so we do not give a calendar for them here.

What the NBS data showed in September 2026

The pattern is visible in official figures. In the September 2026 CPI, food prices fell 1.55% month-on-month, after rising 1.02% in August, as the harvest season began (Voice of Nigeria, 16 Oct 2026). Items the NBS linked to the fall included guinea corn flour, white maize flour, local short-grain rice, eggs, onions, palm oil, Irish potatoes, okra and tomatoes. Rural prices fell 0.89% in the month, while urban prices rose 0.53%.

Year-on-year food inflation was still 19.59%, so food was far dearer than a year before even as it fell for the month; see why prices rarely fall.

Making the calendar work for you

Worked example (illustrative prices)

Suppose a bag of maize costs ₦60,000 in November and ₦75,000 the following July. A household that buys two bags in November spends ₦120,000 instead of ₦150,000 in July, saving ₦30,000, if it has dry, pest-free storage and the cash in November. Losses from poor storage can wipe out that gain, so only buy what you can keep well.

What to check first

  1. Whether you can store the food safely for several months.
  2. Whether locking up cash now leaves you short for rent or fees; see inflation and your budget.
  3. Local market reports, since prices differ widely by state.
  4. The NBS selected food price watch for state averages; see how to use it.

Where Pryme fits

Saving towards a harvest-time bulk buy is easier with a separate pot: a Savings Box keeps the money apart from daily spending, and you can buy from grocery merchants in Spaces in Lagos, Abuja and Port Harcourt.

Questions people ask

When is food cheapest in Nigeria?

For grains, usually during and after the main harvest, October to December, according to FEWS NET's seasonal description.

When are food prices highest in Nigeria?

In the lean season, roughly June to September, before the new harvest arrives.

Is it cheaper to buy rice in December?

Local rice is harvested in the main season, so prices often ease then, but imports, fuel and the exchange rate also matter. Check local market prices.

Why did food prices fall in September 2026?

The NBS reported food prices down 1.55% month-on-month, linked to items such as maize flour, local rice and tomatoes, as harvest began.
