Questions

The things people ask us first.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives people and businesses in Nigeria one account that holds Naira alongside dollars, pounds and euros, and a set of agents that do the running of it — keeping the books, chasing what is owed, answering customers and paying bills. Nothing leaves an account without the owner’s approval.

Can I hold dollars, pounds and euros in a Pryme account?

Yes. A Pryme account holds Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros side by side on one ledger, each with its own account details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area. You can swap between them at a rate you set, and every currency has its own statement.

What is Spaces?

Spaces is available in Nigeria. It gives a shopper money to spend that can only be spent with a participating business. The business is paid into its Naira account whether or not the shopper repays, because Pryme carries the credit. For the business it is free to join, there is nothing monthly, and the customer’s identity is never shown — only a reference and what it is worth.

What do the agents on a Pryme Business Account do?

Five agents come with the account. The Chief of Staff runs the week and keeps what is stuck moving. Finance watches the money and keeps the books as you trade. Compliance keeps the filings on time and screens what moves. Sales chases what you are owed. Customer Support answers your customers and follows up. Each has a job description, a budget and a ceiling you set, and each one proposes rather than acts — nothing leaves the account without your signature.

How does Pryme Pay work?

Pryme Pay takes payments on your own site or on a checkout page you control. The buyer is given a one-time account number and transfers to it from any bank app or by USSD — no card, no OTP, nothing to type in. The money lands in the same account your agents are running, already matched to the order and already in your books.

What are Savings Boxes?

Savings Boxes are separate pots inside a Pryme account, held in Naira. Flexible Boxes can be withdrawn at any time, Fixed Boxes hold to a date, Investment Boxes hold for longer, and Interest-free Boxes earn nothing by design. A business can use them to ring-fence payroll and the tax it withholds, so that money cannot be spent by accident.

Who holds my money, and is it protected?

Pryme is a financial technology company, not a bank. Accounts and deposits are provided by Solid Allianze Microfinance Bank Limited, which is licensed by the Central Bank of Nigeria and is a member of the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation.

Can I build on Pryme?

Yes. Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives you one account that holds US dollars, pounds sterling and euros beside Naira, with an assistant that runs the account for you and asks before anything moves. Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, and further markets open as each licence lands.

Can I open a Pryme account from outside Nigeria?

Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, subject to verification and approval. Foreign-currency balances are held and converted inside that account, so you can hold, receive and swap dollars, pounds and euros wherever you are.

Which currencies can I hold with Pryme?

Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros, side by side on one ledger. Each has its own details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area — and each has its own statement.

How do I send money to Nigeria with Pryme?

Swap at a rate you set rather than the rate of the day, then send to any Pryme username or to a Nigerian bank account. There is no fee to send to another Pryme account.

What does the assistant do?

Eva is the assistant inside the Pryme app. She opens accounts, moves money, saves toward your goals, pays what is due and follows up what is owed to you — and asks you before anything moves.

What is Pryme Rails?

Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

School bus service business: contracts and pricing

How to run a school bus service in Nigeria: the vehicle, insurance, contracts with schools or parents, safety rules and a worked price per term.

The short answer

A school bus service in Nigeria earns a fixed fee per child per term, paid by parents directly or through a school that contracts you. The business works when each bus runs full on short, tight routes; fuel, driver and minder pay, and comprehensive insurance take most of the fee, so price per term from your real costs and get the contract in writing before the term starts.

Two ways to run a school bus service

Some operators contract with one or more private schools, which collect transport fees with school fees and pay the operator. Others sell directly to parents in an estate or neighbourhood and run to several schools on one route. Each model has a different risk.

ModelWho pays youStrengthRisk
Contract with a schoolThe school, per term or per monthOne customer, predictable numbersLate payment from the school; contract lost at renewal
Direct to parentsEach family, per termHigher price per seatCollecting from many families; children leaving mid-term
Staff and pupils combinedSchool for staff, parents for pupilsFuller bus in both directionsTimetable clashes

The vehicle and its papers

Most small operators use a used 14 to 18-seat bus. Whatever you buy, a vehicle carrying children for a fee is a commercial vehicle and needs commercial papers: vehicle licence, roadworthiness certificate, any state commercial permit, and a driver with the right class of licence. The FRSC portal says commercial licences are not issued online; the applicant goes to a capture centre with a medical certificate and driving school certificate. FRSC also requires speed limiters on commercial vehicles, starting with buses, trailers, tankers and trucks.

Ask your state transport ministry and education ministry whether school buses need a particular colour, signage, seat belts for every seat or a separate permit, because rules differ between states. Our guide to vehicle papers and insurance for a transport business lists each document.

Insurance

Third-party insurance is the legal minimum; NAICOM's circular effective 1 January 2023 set ₦20,000 a year for a staff bus, with third-party property damage cover up to ₦3 million. Parents and schools will rightly expect more, so price comprehensive cover and passenger liability with a licensed insurer. The same circular said comprehensive premiums should not be below 5% of the sum insured. Verify every policy on askNIID.

Safety and staff

  • One driver and one adult minder per bus; the minder checks every child on and off and holds the parent contact list.
  • A written pick-up and drop-off procedure: children handed only to named adults, and what happens if no one is home.
  • Background checks and references for every driver and minder.
  • Daily vehicle checks on tyres, brakes, lights and doors, logged in a book.
  • A first-aid kit, fire extinguisher and a plan for breakdowns, with a second vehicle on call.

Pricing per term: a worked example

This is an example with assumed figures for one used 18-seat bus valued at ₦25,000,000, running two morning and two afternoon trips for 30 children over a 65-day term. Use your own quotes.

LinePer term (example)
Fee: 30 children × ₦90,000₦2,700,000
Fuel: 9 litres a day × ₦1,250 × 65 days₦731,250
Driver: ₦150,000 × 3 months₦450,000
Minder: ₦80,000 × 3 months₦240,000
Servicing, tyres and repairs reserve₦250,000
Comprehensive insurance at 5% of ₦25m, a third of a year₦416,667
Licences, permits and admin₦50,000
Total costs₦2,137,917
Margin before vehicle depreciation₦562,083

The margin is about 21% of the fee, and it has to cover the loss in the bus's value, a replacement vehicle on breakdown days, and staff pay during holidays if you want to keep good drivers. Three empty seats at ₦90,000 would take ₦270,000 off the margin, so a full bus matters more than a high fee. Price routes, not just children: a child 15 minutes off the main route can cost the whole bus a later start.

The contract

Whether you sign with a school or with parents, write down:

  1. The route, pick-up windows and the latest drop-off time.
  2. The fee per term, the due date and whether it is refundable if a child leaves.
  3. Price changes: a clause allowing review at the start of a term if fuel moves sharply.
  4. Behaviour rules on the bus and what happens after repeated breaches.
  5. Who is responsible for a child between the gate and the bus.
  6. Notice periods for either side to end the arrangement.

For a school contract, add payment terms, for example within 14 days of the start of term, and the number of seats guaranteed. Schools collecting on your behalf should give you a list of paid children each term; see a school fees collection system that works.

What to check first

  • State rules for school buses: colour, signage, permits and seat belts.
  • Commercial licence class and medical certificate for each driver.
  • Comprehensive and passenger liability cover, verified on askNIID.
  • Enough confirmed children to fill at least 80% of the seats before you buy.

Where Pryme fits

Schools are one of the Spaces sectors, and transport operators can apply too. A Pryme Business Account can issue each family its own virtual account number so termly fees are matched automatically, and you can run monthly driver and minder pay through payroll. Our guide to planning cash for the long vacation applies to bus staff too.

Questions people ask

How much do school bus services charge per term in Nigeria?

Fees vary by city, distance and school. Build yours from fuel, staff, insurance and repairs; in our labelled example, ₦90,000 per child per term leaves about 21% margin on a full 30-child route.

What insurance does a school bus need in Nigeria?

Third-party cover is the legal minimum; the NAICOM circular from January 2023 set ₦20,000 a year for a staff bus. Most schools and parents expect comprehensive and passenger liability cover too.

Does a school bus driver need a commercial licence?

Yes, carrying children for a fee is commercial driving. FRSC processes commercial licences at capture centres with a medical certificate and driving school certificate.

How do I get a contract with a private school for transport?

Approach the proprietor before the term starts with a route plan, your safety procedure, vehicle papers and insurance, and a written price per term.
