Ten years, one trunk

The business has changed shape four times and never changed what it was rooted in. Each version was built out of what the last one could not do.

2016E-commerce

2018OjirehPrime Card

2020Microfinance bank

PrymeSolid Allianze acquired — an existing bank with an existing licence. The perimeter stopped being someone else’s to draw.

2023Multicurrency

More than one currency on one balance, and the rebrand to Pryme. A Nigerian business could hold dollars without holding a second institution.

2026Agentic operations

Accounts that do the work rather than only hold value. Five agents on the account, inside a policy you write — which is where the new mark starts.

Questions

The things people ask us first.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives people and businesses in Nigeria one account that holds Naira alongside dollars, pounds and euros, and a set of agents that do the running of it — keeping the books, chasing what is owed, answering customers and paying bills. Nothing leaves an account without the owner’s approval.

Can I hold dollars, pounds and euros in a Pryme account?

Yes. A Pryme account holds Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros side by side on one ledger, each with its own account details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area. You can swap between them at a rate you set, and every currency has its own statement.

What is Spaces?

Spaces is available in Nigeria. It gives a shopper money to spend that can only be spent with a participating business. The business is paid into its Naira account whether or not the shopper repays, because Pryme carries the credit. For the business it is free to join, there is nothing monthly, and the customer’s identity is never shown — only a reference and what it is worth.

What do the agents on a Pryme Business Account do?

Five agents come with the account. The Chief of Staff runs the week and keeps what is stuck moving. Finance watches the money and keeps the books as you trade. Compliance keeps the filings on time and screens what moves. Sales chases what you are owed. Customer Support answers your customers and follows up. Each has a job description, a budget and a ceiling you set, and each one proposes rather than acts — nothing leaves the account without your signature.

How does Pryme Pay work?

Pryme Pay takes payments on your own site or on a checkout page you control. The buyer is given a one-time account number and transfers to it from any bank app or by USSD — no card, no OTP, nothing to type in. The money lands in the same account your agents are running, already matched to the order and already in your books.

What are Savings Boxes?

Savings Boxes are separate pots inside a Pryme account, held in Naira. Flexible Boxes can be withdrawn at any time, Fixed Boxes hold to a date, Investment Boxes hold for longer, and Interest-free Boxes earn nothing by design. A business can use them to ring-fence payroll and the tax it withholds, so that money cannot be spent by accident.

Who holds my money, and is it protected?

Pryme is a financial technology company, not a bank. Accounts and deposits are provided by Solid Allianze Microfinance Bank Limited, which is licensed by the Central Bank of Nigeria and is a member of the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation.

Can I build on Pryme?

Yes. Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives you one account that holds US dollars, pounds sterling and euros beside Naira, with an assistant that runs the account for you and asks before anything moves. Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, and further markets open as each licence lands.

Can I open a Pryme account from outside Nigeria?

Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, subject to verification and approval. Foreign-currency balances are held and converted inside that account, so you can hold, receive and swap dollars, pounds and euros wherever you are.

Which currencies can I hold with Pryme?

Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros, side by side on one ledger. Each has its own details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area — and each has its own statement.

How do I send money to Nigeria with Pryme?

Swap at a rate you set rather than the rate of the day, then send to any Pryme username or to a Nigerian bank account. There is no fee to send to another Pryme account.

What does the assistant do?

Eva is the assistant inside the Pryme app. She opens accounts, moves money, saves toward your goals, pays what is due and follows up what is owed to you — and asks you before anything moves.

What is Pryme Rails?

Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

How to recover an unpaid invoice in Nigeria, step by step

From polite reminders to a demand letter, mediation and court: the order to follow when a customer will not pay, with the cost and time at each stage.

The short answer

Work up in stages: reminders around the due date, a formal statement, a demand letter giving a deadline, a negotiated or mediated settlement, and then court. For debts up to ₦5,000,000 in Lagos, the small claims procedure lets you sue without a lawyer and targets judgment within 60 days of filing. Larger or disputed debts go to the ordinary courts, which have no fixed timetable.

An unpaid invoice is rarely solved by one angry call. It is solved by a steady sequence, where each step is documented and gives the customer a clear, cheap way to pay before the next, more expensive step. Here is the order Nigerian businesses commonly follow, with what each step costs you in time and money.

Before you chase: check your file

The customer's first defence will be that something is wrong with the invoice or the supply. Fix that before you escalate. You need:

  • The agreement: signed contract, accepted quote, PO or a message accepting your price.
  • Proof of delivery or completion; see proof of delivery.
  • The invoice, with due date and payment details.
  • Any part payments, and whether the customer deducted withholding tax. Under the 2024 WHT regulations summarised on Mondaq (July 2024), a deduction of 2% or 5% is not a short payment if the customer gives you a WHT receipt; see when a customer pays less than the invoice.

The steps in order

StepWhenYour costTime
1. RemindersBefore and just after due dateYour time1 to 3 weeks
2. Statement and call2 to 3 weeks overdueYour time1 to 2 weeks
3. Demand letterWhen reminders failFree if you write it; a lawyer charges a fee14 days to respond (Lagos small claims form)
4. Settlement or mediationAfter demandLow; mediator fees varyDays to weeks
5a. Small claims court (Lagos, up to ₦5m)No settlementFiling fees (ask the registry); no lawyer neededTarget 60 days from filing
5b. Ordinary courtAbove limits or complexLawyer's fees and filing costsNo fixed timetable
6. EnforcementAfter judgment, if unpaidFurther feesVaries

The timings in steps 1, 2 and 4 are typical practice, not legal rules. The 14-day and 60-day figures come from the Lagos State Practice Direction on Small Claims Court 2023.

Step 1 and 2: reminders and statement

Send a friendly reminder a few days before the due date and on the day. Once overdue, send a statement listing every unpaid invoice and any agreed interest, then call the person who approves payments, not only the person who ordered. Our planned invoice reminder schedule gives wording.

Step 3: demand letter

A demand letter states the amount, the basis of the debt, a deadline, and what you will do if unpaid. In Lagos, a demand letter in Form SCA 1 is a precondition to filing a small claim (Article 2(1)(e)), and the form gives the recipient 14 days after receipt to comply. A letter on a lawyer's letterhead often prompts payment; see our planned guide to what a lawyer's demand letter costs.

Step 4: settle or mediate

Offer a payment plan in writing, perhaps waiving agreed interest if the principal is paid on schedule. If talks stall, a neutral mediator can help. Even in the Lagos small claims court, the magistrate must first try to promote an amicable settlement, under Article 10(1).

Step 5: court

For claims within the Lagos small claims limit of ₦5,000,000, excluding interest and costs, parties may represent themselves (Article 11), and the whole process from filing to judgment "shall not exceed 60 days" (Article 13(2)). See suing at the Lagos small claims court, and our planned guide to small claims courts in other states. Larger claims go to the Magistrates' or High Court under their own rules, usually with a lawyer. Before suing, weigh the realistic chance of collecting: a judgment against a business with no assets or bank balance can cost more to enforce than it recovers.

Keep the customer, or stop supplying?

While you chase, decide whether to keep supplying on credit. Many businesses move a late payer to payment in advance until the balance is cleared, rather than cutting them off. See our planned guide on when to stop supplying a customer who owes you.

Step 6: enforcement

A judgment does not pay itself. In Lagos small claims, judgment is enforced like any Magistrates' Court money order, and garnishee proceedings (Forms SCA 9A and 9B) can attach money the debtor holds in a bank (Article 14).

Worked example

Example only. A supplier is owed ₦1,400,000 on a signed order with an agreed 2% per month simple interest clause. After two months overdue, interest is ₦56,000 (₦1,400,000 × 2% × 2). The supplier sends Form SCA 1 demanding ₦1,456,000. The customer offers ₦700,000 now and ₦700,000 in 30 days if interest is waived. Accepting gets ₦1,400,000 without court costs; refusing means filing a small claim and waiting up to about 60 days for judgment, plus enforcement. Interest only counts if the clause was agreed; see charging interest on a late invoice.

Where Pryme fits

A Pryme Business Account supports invoicing, and the Finance agent prepares work for a person to approve. When a customer pays, a verifiable receipt from VerifyDoc.ai gives both sides a record either can check.

Questions people ask

What do I do if a customer refuses to pay my invoice in Nigeria?

Check your documents, send reminders and a statement, then a demand letter with a deadline. If that fails, negotiate or mediate, and finally sue: in Lagos, the small claims court handles debts up to ₦5,000,000.

Do I need a lawyer to recover a debt in Nigeria?

Not for the Lagos small claims procedure, where parties may represent themselves and companies can be represented by a principal officer. For larger or complex claims in the ordinary courts, a lawyer is advisable.

How long does it take to recover a debt in court in Lagos?

Under the Lagos small claims practice direction, filing to judgment shall not exceed 60 days, though exceeding it does not invalidate the judgment. Ordinary courts have no fixed timetable.

Is a demand letter required before suing?

For Lagos small claims, yes: a demand letter in Form SCA 1 must be served before filing, giving 14 days to comply.
