Questions

The things people ask us first.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives people and businesses in Nigeria one account that holds Naira alongside dollars, pounds and euros, and a set of agents that do the running of it — keeping the books, chasing what is owed, answering customers and paying bills. Nothing leaves an account without the owner’s approval.

Can I hold dollars, pounds and euros in a Pryme account?

Yes. A Pryme account holds Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros side by side on one ledger, each with its own account details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area. You can swap between them at a rate you set, and every currency has its own statement.

What is Spaces?

Spaces is available in Nigeria. It gives a shopper money to spend that can only be spent with a participating business. The business is paid into its Naira account whether or not the shopper repays, because Pryme carries the credit. For the business it is free to join, there is nothing monthly, and the customer’s identity is never shown — only a reference and what it is worth.

What do the agents on a Pryme Business Account do?

Five agents come with the account. The Chief of Staff runs the week and keeps what is stuck moving. Finance watches the money and keeps the books as you trade. Compliance keeps the filings on time and screens what moves. Sales chases what you are owed. Customer Support answers your customers and follows up. Each has a job description, a budget and a ceiling you set, and each one proposes rather than acts — nothing leaves the account without your signature.

How does Pryme Pay work?

Pryme Pay takes payments on your own site or on a checkout page you control. The buyer is given a one-time account number and transfers to it from any bank app or by USSD — no card, no OTP, nothing to type in. The money lands in the same account your agents are running, already matched to the order and already in your books.

What are Savings Boxes?

Savings Boxes are separate pots inside a Pryme account, held in Naira. Flexible Boxes can be withdrawn at any time, Fixed Boxes hold to a date, Investment Boxes hold for longer, and Interest-free Boxes earn nothing by design. A business can use them to ring-fence payroll and the tax it withholds, so that money cannot be spent by accident.

Who holds my money, and is it protected?

Pryme is a financial technology company, not a bank. Accounts and deposits are provided by Solid Allianze Microfinance Bank Limited, which is licensed by the Central Bank of Nigeria and is a member of the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation.

Can I build on Pryme?

Yes. Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives you one account that holds US dollars, pounds sterling and euros beside Naira, with an assistant that runs the account for you and asks before anything moves. Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, and further markets open as each licence lands.

Can I open a Pryme account from outside Nigeria?

Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, subject to verification and approval. Foreign-currency balances are held and converted inside that account, so you can hold, receive and swap dollars, pounds and euros wherever you are.

Which currencies can I hold with Pryme?

Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros, side by side on one ledger. Each has its own details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area — and each has its own statement.

How do I send money to Nigeria with Pryme?

Swap at a rate you set rather than the rate of the day, then send to any Pryme username or to a Nigerian bank account. There is no fee to send to another Pryme account.

What does the assistant do?

Eva is the assistant inside the Pryme app. She opens accounts, moves money, saves toward your goals, pays what is due and follows up what is owed to you — and asks you before anything moves.

What is Pryme Rails?

Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

Banking how-tos

Providus Bank dollar card and international spending

What we could confirm about ProvidusUnity Bank dollar cards and foreign spending, what the CBN caps, and what to ask during the merger.

The short answer

ProvidusUnity Bank does not publish dollar card products or international spending limits on any page we could open in October 2026, and its systems were still being unified after the merger with Unity Bank, per Ripples Nigeria in June 2026. Ask the bank directly; for context, other banks' naira card limits ranged from $8,000 to $40,000 a quarter as at September 2026, per Nairametrics.

If you bank with Providus, now ProvidusUnity Bank, and want to pay for things abroad or online in dollars, you need answers to two questions: which card the bank issues for foreign use, and how much it allows you to spend. We could not find either answer on a page we could open, and the bank is part-way through merging its systems with Unity Bank's. This guide explains the options, the CBN rules on card charges, and the exact questions to ask.

Why answers may change in 2026

Ripples Nigeria reported on 29 June 2026 that Providus and Unity Bank had completed their merger and that "existing customer accounts from both banks remain active, though systems and branding are actively being unified." Card products are one of the things that typically change during such unification. If you hold a card from either legacy bank, ask whether it will be replaced, when, and whether the limits will change.

Card types to ask about

Naira debit card for foreign use
Spends from your naira balance, converted at the bank's rate, within a foreign-spend limit the bank sets.
Dollar debit card
Linked to a USD domiciliary account and spends dollars you hold.
Dollar prepaid card
Loaded in advance; you can spend only what is on it.
Virtual card
A card for online use only, if the bank offers one.

What other banks set, as at September 2026

Nairametrics reported on 7 September 2026 that several large banks had raised naira card international limits: GTBank $40,000 a quarter, FirstBank $10,000 a quarter for POS and web, Zenith up to $50,000 a year and Stanbic IBTC $8,000 a quarter. Providus was not named. These figures are context, not a guide to ProvidusUnity's limits.

Charges the CBN caps

  • Debit card issuance: ₦1,000 one-off under the CBN Guide to Charges effective January 2020; the April 2026 exposure draft proposes ₦1,500, with no effective date reported.
  • Foreign-currency card maintenance: up to $10 a year.
  • Per-transaction foreign charges: set by the bank and card scheme; ask for them in writing.

Questions to ask ProvidusUnity

  1. Which cards on my account can be used abroad and online in foreign currency?
  2. What is the limit per transaction, per day and per quarter, for ATM, POS and online?
  3. Do I need to activate international use, and how?
  4. What rate and fees apply to foreign transactions on a naira card?
  5. Is a dollar card available on a domiciliary account, and what does it cost?
  6. Will my current card change because of the merger, and when?

Send these by email so you have the answers in writing. For business customers, nairaCompare lists businessconcierge@providusbank.com.

Worked example (illustrative)

You pay three foreign subscriptions of $15, $30 and $55 a month on a naira card, a total of $100 a month or $300 a quarter. If your bank's quarterly limit were $500, that leaves $200 for anything else that quarter, so a $250 course fee would be declined. Totting up recurring charges against the limit before a big payment avoids surprises. These figures are examples, not ProvidusUnity limits.

Using a card abroad safely

  • Carry a second way to pay in case a card is declined or retained by a machine.
  • When a foreign terminal offers to charge you in naira, compare it with paying in the local currency; the merchant's conversion is often less favourable.
  • Turn on transaction alerts so you see every foreign charge as it happens.
  • Keep the bank's email address with you, since 0700 numbers may not connect from abroad.
  • Report a lost card at once; you may be liable for spending before you report it.

If a foreign charge looks wrong, raise it with the bank in writing quickly; card disputes have time limits under the card schemes' rules, and the longer you wait, the harder recovery becomes.

What to check first

  • The current card product and limit, confirmed by the bank in writing.
  • Whether your card is from legacy Providus or legacy Unity, and its replacement plan.
  • Your domiciliary account, if you want a dollar card; see saving in dollars in Nigeria.
  • How the merger affects your account more broadly: ProvidusUnity merger for customers.

A note on cost: when a naira card is used abroad, the naira amount debited depends on the conversion rate the bank applies on the day the transaction settles, which can differ from the day you paid. Check the debit on your statement against the receipt, and ask the bank which rate it uses.

Where Pryme fits

A Pryme account holds USD, GBP and EUR alongside naira, with local account details for each currency. Money received in dollars stays in dollars, and Swap converts only when you approve, with the rate shown first and the fee on its own line. See multicurrency accounts and Swap.

Questions people ask

Does Providus Bank have a dollar card?

We could not confirm one on any ProvidusUnity page we opened in October 2026. Ask the bank which dollar or international cards it currently issues.

Can I use my Providus naira card abroad?

Possibly, within a limit the bank sets. The limit is not published; ask the bank and confirm how to enable international use.

Will my Providus card change after the Unity Bank merger?

Possibly. Ripples Nigeria reported that systems and branding were being unified; ask the bank whether your card will be replaced and when.

How much do Nigerian banks allow on naira cards abroad?

Each bank sets its own. As at September 2026, Nairametrics reported $8,000 to $40,000 a quarter at several large banks; Providus was not named.
