Questions

The things people ask us first.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives people and businesses in Nigeria one account that holds Naira alongside dollars, pounds and euros, and a set of agents that do the running of it — keeping the books, chasing what is owed, answering customers and paying bills. Nothing leaves an account without the owner’s approval.

Can I hold dollars, pounds and euros in a Pryme account?

Yes. A Pryme account holds Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros side by side on one ledger, each with its own account details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area. You can swap between them at a rate you set, and every currency has its own statement.

What is Spaces?

Spaces is available in Nigeria. It gives a shopper money to spend that can only be spent with a participating business. The business is paid into its Naira account whether or not the shopper repays, because Pryme carries the credit. For the business it is free to join, there is nothing monthly, and the customer’s identity is never shown — only a reference and what it is worth.

What do the agents on a Pryme Business Account do?

Five agents come with the account. The Chief of Staff runs the week and keeps what is stuck moving. Finance watches the money and keeps the books as you trade. Compliance keeps the filings on time and screens what moves. Sales chases what you are owed. Customer Support answers your customers and follows up. Each has a job description, a budget and a ceiling you set, and each one proposes rather than acts — nothing leaves the account without your signature.

How does Pryme Pay work?

Pryme Pay takes payments on your own site or on a checkout page you control. The buyer is given a one-time account number and transfers to it from any bank app or by USSD — no card, no OTP, nothing to type in. The money lands in the same account your agents are running, already matched to the order and already in your books.

What are Savings Boxes?

Savings Boxes are separate pots inside a Pryme account, held in Naira. Flexible Boxes can be withdrawn at any time, Fixed Boxes hold to a date, Investment Boxes hold for longer, and Interest-free Boxes earn nothing by design. A business can use them to ring-fence payroll and the tax it withholds, so that money cannot be spent by accident.

Who holds my money, and is it protected?

Pryme is a financial technology company, not a bank. Accounts and deposits are provided by Solid Allianze Microfinance Bank Limited, which is licensed by the Central Bank of Nigeria and is a member of the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation.

Can I build on Pryme?

Yes. Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives you one account that holds US dollars, pounds sterling and euros beside Naira, with an assistant that runs the account for you and asks before anything moves. Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, and further markets open as each licence lands.

Can I open a Pryme account from outside Nigeria?

Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, subject to verification and approval. Foreign-currency balances are held and converted inside that account, so you can hold, receive and swap dollars, pounds and euros wherever you are.

Which currencies can I hold with Pryme?

Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros, side by side on one ledger. Each has its own details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area — and each has its own statement.

How do I send money to Nigeria with Pryme?

Swap at a rate you set rather than the rate of the day, then send to any Pryme username or to a Nigerian bank account. There is no fee to send to another Pryme account.

What does the assistant do?

Eva is the assistant inside the Pryme app. She opens accounts, moves money, saves toward your goals, pays what is due and follows up what is owed to you — and asks you before anything moves.

What is Pryme Rails?

Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

How to price services at a Nigerian salon or barbershop

A practical method for Nigerian salons, barbers and spas to price services: cost per minute, products, staff share, price lists and when to raise prices.

The short answer

Price each salon or barbering service from your cost per chair-minute plus the products used, add the stylist's share, then add a margin and check the result against nearby competitors. Publish a clear price list, show the full price before work starts, and review prices at least twice a year as rent, power and product costs rise.

Start with your cost per chair-minute

Most salons and barbershops in Nigeria price by copying the shop down the road. That works until your rent, generator fuel or product costs are higher than theirs. A better starting point is to know what each minute of chair time costs you before any product is used.

  1. Add up your fixed monthly costs: rent, power and fuel, water, internet, cleaning, any fixed salaries, levies and loan repayments.
  2. Work out your bookable chair-minutes a month: chairs x open hours x days open x 60, then multiply by a realistic occupancy, perhaps 50% to 60% for a new shop.
  3. Divide costs by bookable minutes. The result is your fixed cost per minute.

Build each service price

With the cost per minute known, every service can be priced the same way:

ComponentHow to estimateExample: 90-minute braiding
Chair timeMinutes x cost per minute90 x ₦35 = ₦3,150
ProductsExtensions, gels, oils, foils used₦6,000
Stylist shareCommission or wage per service₦5,000
MarginA set percentage on top25% of ₦14,150 = about ₦3,540
PriceTotal, rounded₦17,700, round to ₦18,000

These figures are illustrations; use your own. The point is that long services such as braids, locs or full spa treatments must carry far more chair cost than a quick trim or line-up. Barbers often underprice beard work and kids' cuts that take nearly as long as an adult cut.

Check against the market, then position

Once you have a cost-based price, look at what three to five comparable salons nearby charge. If you are well below them, you may be leaving money on the table. If you are well above, decide whether your service, hygiene, booking and finish justify it, and say so clearly to customers.

Hair supplied by the customer

Many Nigerian salons charge differently when the client brings their own extensions or products. Publish both prices, so nobody feels surprised, and keep the labour price the same in both versions.

Packages and memberships

A monthly barbing plan or a set of spa sessions paid upfront smooths your cash flow and brings regulars back. Price packages at a modest saving, not a deep one, and set an expiry date.

Show prices clearly and honour them

The FCCPC's guidance on consumer rights says prices are a material fact that must be fully disclosed, and that the price displayed should match what the customer pays at the point of payment. In a salon that means a visible price list, and agreeing the total, including add-ons, before you start. If a customer asks, the FCCPC also expects you to provide an itemised written record of the transaction, including any taxes.

  • Display the price list at the reception and online.
  • List common add-ons separately: wash, treatment, extra length, home service.
  • Confirm the total before work begins, especially for custom styles.
  • Give a receipt for every payment.

When and how to raise prices

Review prices at least twice a year, and whenever a major cost such as rent or fuel jumps. Give regular clients notice of a few weeks, raise prices on long services first, and keep a small number of entry-level services steady so price-sensitive clients still have an option.

Common pricing mistakes

Most salons that struggle with margins make one of a handful of errors. Check your price list against these:

  • Pricing every style the same regardless of length or time, so long styles subsidise short ones.
  • Ignoring the generator. Fuel is often one of the largest costs in a Nigerian salon and must sit inside the cost per minute.
  • Forgetting the quiet hours. If you price as though every chair is full all day, you will under-recover on slow weekdays.
  • Giving discounts to friends and family that nobody records, so the books never show the true takings.
  • Not charging for home service travel time, which can take as long as the service itself.
  • Changing prices verbally, so staff quote different figures to different clients.

A useful test: pick your five most booked services and calculate the margin on each using real minutes and real product use. If any comes out near zero, that service needs a new price, a shorter method or a different product.

Tax status can change as you grow. Under the reforms in force from January 2026, a business with annual turnover of ₦100 million or less and fixed assets below ₦250 million counts as a small company for 0% company income tax, and the VAT registration threshold is ₦50 million in annual turnover. If you are approaching either line, speak to an accountant before you set next year's prices.

Where Pryme fits

Spas and salons are a sector supported on Spaces. A salon, barbershop or spa with a Pryme Business Account can join Spaces and be found by customers who hold Loans on Spaces, credit lent by Solid Allianze MFB that can only be spent with Spaces merchants. The customer accepts the full agreement before anything is drawn. For how this works for beauty businesses, see pay-later for salons, spas and gyms; for merchant terms, contact Pryme. Clients can also pay through bank-transfer checkout.

Questions people ask

How do I calculate the price of a hairstyle in my salon?

Multiply the minutes it takes by your cost per chair-minute, add products used and the stylist's share, then add a margin. Compare the result with similar salons nearby before you settle on it.

How much should a barber charge for a haircut in Nigeria?

It depends on your area, costs and positioning. Work out your own cost per minute first, then compare with three to five barbershops near you.

Should salons charge less if the customer brings their own hair?

Most do, because the product cost falls away. Publish both prices and keep the labour charge the same.

Do salons have to display prices in Nigeria?

FCCPC guidance says prices must be fully disclosed and the displayed price should match what the customer pays, so a visible price list is the safest practice.
