Questions

The things people ask us first.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives people and businesses in Nigeria one account that holds Naira alongside dollars, pounds and euros, and a set of agents that do the running of it — keeping the books, chasing what is owed, answering customers and paying bills. Nothing leaves an account without the owner’s approval.

Can I hold dollars, pounds and euros in a Pryme account?

Yes. A Pryme account holds Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros side by side on one ledger, each with its own account details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area. You can swap between them at a rate you set, and every currency has its own statement.

What is Spaces?

Spaces is available in Nigeria. It gives a shopper money to spend that can only be spent with a participating business. The business is paid into its Naira account whether or not the shopper repays, because Pryme carries the credit. For the business it is free to join, there is nothing monthly, and the customer’s identity is never shown — only a reference and what it is worth.

What do the agents on a Pryme Business Account do?

Five agents come with the account. The Chief of Staff runs the week and keeps what is stuck moving. Finance watches the money and keeps the books as you trade. Compliance keeps the filings on time and screens what moves. Sales chases what you are owed. Customer Support answers your customers and follows up. Each has a job description, a budget and a ceiling you set, and each one proposes rather than acts — nothing leaves the account without your signature.

How does Pryme Pay work?

Pryme Pay takes payments on your own site or on a checkout page you control. The buyer is given a one-time account number and transfers to it from any bank app or by USSD — no card, no OTP, nothing to type in. The money lands in the same account your agents are running, already matched to the order and already in your books.

What are Savings Boxes?

Savings Boxes are separate pots inside a Pryme account, held in Naira. Flexible Boxes can be withdrawn at any time, Fixed Boxes hold to a date, Investment Boxes hold for longer, and Interest-free Boxes earn nothing by design. A business can use them to ring-fence payroll and the tax it withholds, so that money cannot be spent by accident.

Who holds my money, and is it protected?

Pryme is a financial technology company, not a bank. Accounts and deposits are provided by Solid Allianze Microfinance Bank Limited, which is licensed by the Central Bank of Nigeria and is a member of the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation.

Can I build on Pryme?

Yes. Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives you one account that holds US dollars, pounds sterling and euros beside Naira, with an assistant that runs the account for you and asks before anything moves. Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, and further markets open as each licence lands.

Can I open a Pryme account from outside Nigeria?

Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, subject to verification and approval. Foreign-currency balances are held and converted inside that account, so you can hold, receive and swap dollars, pounds and euros wherever you are.

Which currencies can I hold with Pryme?

Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros, side by side on one ledger. Each has its own details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area — and each has its own statement.

How do I send money to Nigeria with Pryme?

Swap at a rate you set rather than the rate of the day, then send to any Pryme username or to a Nigerian bank account. There is no fee to send to another Pryme account.

What does the assistant do?

Eva is the assistant inside the Pryme app. She opens accounts, moves money, saves toward your goals, pays what is due and follows up what is owed to you — and asks you before anything moves.

What is Pryme Rails?

Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

Pension Protection Fund and minimum guaranteed pension

What Nigeria's Pension Protection Fund is, how it is funded, what the minimum guaranteed pension is for, and how a retiree finds out if they qualify.

The short answer

The Pension Protection Fund is a fund set up under the Pension Reform Act 2014 to guarantee a minimum benefit to contributors if their pension falls short, and it is financed by a government subvention of 1% of the total monthly wage bill of public-sector employees, an annual levy PenCom sets, and investment income, according to PwC's summary of the Act. PenCom sets who qualifies for the minimum guaranteed pension and the amount in its own guidelines, so a retiree confirms eligibility with their PFA.

Why the fund exists

Under the Contributory Pension Scheme your pension depends on your RSA balance. Someone who earned little, had long gaps in remittance or retired after a weak period for investments can end up with a monthly pension too small to live on. The PRA 2014 answered this with a safety net. PwC's July 2014 summary of the Act describes the Pension Protection Fund as existing to guarantee a minimum benefit to contributors in the event of any shortfalls in their pension funds.

How it is funded

PwC's summary lists three sources of money for the fund:

  1. An annual subvention from the Federal Government of 1% of the total monthly wage bill of public-sector employees.
  2. An annual pension protection levy charged by PenCom.
  3. Income from investing the fund's own money.

The fund is separate from your RSA. Nothing is taken from your account to pay into it, and it is not a bonus everyone receives; it is drawn on only where its rules say a contributor qualifies.

The minimum guaranteed pension

The minimum guaranteed pension is the main way the fund reaches individuals. In outline, and as the fund's stated purpose suggests, PenCom sets a floor and a qualifying retiree whose RSA cannot pay that much has the difference made up from the fund. PenCom's Framework for Micro Pension Plan (2018) also says micro pension contributors may qualify for the Minimum Pension Guarantee under separate guidelines, so the safety net is not limited to salaried workers.

The amount of the floor and the qualifying conditions are set in PenCom's guidelines, which we did not have open when writing. We therefore do not state a figure here. Ask your PFA for PenCom's current conditions and the current floor in writing, and keep the reply.

Worked example

Example only, with an assumed floor, to show how a top-up works. Suppose PenCom's floor were ₦50,000 a month and a qualifying retiree's programmed withdrawal from her RSA pays ₦32,000 a month.

ItemMonthlyYearly
Pension from RSA₦32,000₦384,000
Assumed floor₦50,000₦600,000
Top-up from the Pension Protection Fund₦18,000₦216,000
Total received₦50,000₦600,000

If her RSA instead paid ₦56,000 a month, above the assumed floor, no top-up would be due.

Who it is for, and who it is not

  • For: contributors under the Contributory Pension Scheme and, under its own guidelines, micro pension contributors whose pension falls below PenCom's floor and who meet the conditions.
  • Not a replacement for saving: the floor is a minimum, not a comfortable income.
  • Not for missing remittances: if your employer failed to remit, the right route is a complaint so the arrears and penalties are paid; see employer not remitting.
  • Separate from pension reviews: public-service pension reviews under section 173(3) of the Constitution are a different rule; see the five-year review.

Before relying on a top-up

A top-up, where it applies, lifts a small pension to the floor. It does not lift it further. Several other steps can raise the pension you get from your own RSA, and they are worth taking first.

  • Recover missing remittances. Each year an employer failed to pay is money, plus the late-payment penalty PenCom's 2023 FAQ describes, that belongs in your RSA.
  • Merge any second RSA. Contributions split across two accounts can leave both looking small.
  • Top up before retiring. PenCom's FAQ allows voluntary contributions while you work, within limits.
  • Compare payout options. An annuity from an insurer and programmed withdrawal from your PFA price the same balance differently; see programmed withdrawal or annuity.
  • Think about the lump sum. Under PenCom's rules a lump sum is only possible above the pension floor of 50% of final pay; a small balance usually leaves little room for one; see lump sums.

Steps if you think you qualify

  1. Get your current monthly pension in writing from your PFA.
  2. Ask the PFA whether you meet PenCom's minimum pension conditions, and for the current floor.
  3. Make sure your data recapture is complete; PenCom's 2023 FAQ says holders who have not recaptured cannot access benefits.
  4. Gather the records the PFA asks for, such as your RSA statement, retirement letter and proof of age.
  5. If the PFA's answer is unclear or delayed, raise it with PenCom; see complaining to PenCom.

What to check first

  • Whether your pension is below PenCom's current floor.
  • Your years of contributions, including any gaps.
  • That all past employers remitted; a missing year might be recoverable and raise your balance.
  • That the PFA has your correct bank details for any top-up.

How pensions are calculated in the first place is shown in our worked example.

Where Pryme fits

For retirees living on a small pension, keeping bills predictable helps. The Personal Assistant can prepare electricity and airtime payments for you to approve, and nothing moves without your approval.
