Questions

The things people ask us first.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives people and businesses in Nigeria one account that holds Naira alongside dollars, pounds and euros, and a set of agents that do the running of it — keeping the books, chasing what is owed, answering customers and paying bills. Nothing leaves an account without the owner’s approval.

Can I hold dollars, pounds and euros in a Pryme account?

Yes. A Pryme account holds Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros side by side on one ledger, each with its own account details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area. You can swap between them at a rate you set, and every currency has its own statement.

What is Spaces?

Spaces is available in Nigeria. It gives a shopper money to spend that can only be spent with a participating business. The business is paid into its Naira account whether or not the shopper repays, because Pryme carries the credit. For the business it is free to join, there is nothing monthly, and the customer’s identity is never shown — only a reference and what it is worth.

What do the agents on a Pryme Business Account do?

Five agents come with the account. The Chief of Staff runs the week and keeps what is stuck moving. Finance watches the money and keeps the books as you trade. Compliance keeps the filings on time and screens what moves. Sales chases what you are owed. Customer Support answers your customers and follows up. Each has a job description, a budget and a ceiling you set, and each one proposes rather than acts — nothing leaves the account without your signature.

How does Pryme Pay work?

Pryme Pay takes payments on your own site or on a checkout page you control. The buyer is given a one-time account number and transfers to it from any bank app or by USSD — no card, no OTP, nothing to type in. The money lands in the same account your agents are running, already matched to the order and already in your books.

What are Savings Boxes?

Savings Boxes are separate pots inside a Pryme account, held in Naira. Flexible Boxes can be withdrawn at any time, Fixed Boxes hold to a date, Investment Boxes hold for longer, and Interest-free Boxes earn nothing by design. A business can use them to ring-fence payroll and the tax it withholds, so that money cannot be spent by accident.

Who holds my money, and is it protected?

Pryme is a financial technology company, not a bank. Accounts and deposits are provided by Solid Allianze Microfinance Bank Limited, which is licensed by the Central Bank of Nigeria and is a member of the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation.

Can I build on Pryme?

Yes. Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives you one account that holds US dollars, pounds sterling and euros beside Naira, with an assistant that runs the account for you and asks before anything moves. Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, and further markets open as each licence lands.

Can I open a Pryme account from outside Nigeria?

Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, subject to verification and approval. Foreign-currency balances are held and converted inside that account, so you can hold, receive and swap dollars, pounds and euros wherever you are.

Which currencies can I hold with Pryme?

Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros, side by side on one ledger. Each has its own details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area — and each has its own statement.

How do I send money to Nigeria with Pryme?

Swap at a rate you set rather than the rate of the day, then send to any Pryme username or to a Nigerian bank account. There is no fee to send to another Pryme account.

What does the assistant do?

Eva is the assistant inside the Pryme app. She opens accounts, moves money, saves toward your goals, pays what is due and follows up what is owed to you — and asks you before anything moves.

What is Pryme Rails?

Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

Pay-later for pharmacies in Nigeria

How a Nigerian pharmacy can let patients spread the cost of medicine without running a credit book: where it helps, the numbers, and what to watch.

Part of the guideOffer pay-later in Nigeria: get paid today, customers pay later

The short answer

A pharmacy can offer pay-later through a registered provider: the patient takes the full course of medicine today, the provider pays the pharmacy, and the patient repays the provider. It helps most with monthly refills for long-term conditions and with full courses of expensive antibiotics, where patients otherwise buy a few days at a time. The fee has to fit within thin margins, and clinical judgement must stay separate from the payment.

Most community pharmacists in Nigeria know the patient who asks for "just one week" of a blood pressure drug, or half a course of antibiotics, because that is what they can afford today. Some pharmacies keep a notebook of trusted patients who pay later. Pay-later through a provider does the same job without the pharmacy carrying the debt. This article covers how it applies to pharmacies specifically; the general mechanics are in our guide to offering pay-later in Nigeria.

Why price is the problem at the counter

Medicine prices in Nigeria rose sharply after the naira's fall. A study in the Pan African Medical Journal, which tracked one public and one private pharmacy in North-Central Nigeria from March 2023 to February 2024, found antibiotic prices up about 78% in the private pharmacy and average anti-hypertensive prices up 134% over the year. An SBM Intelligence survey reported Augmentin 625mg rising from ₦4,000 in 2019 to ₦26,000 by November 2023. Inflation has eased since, to 15.39% in August 2026 by the NBS measure, but prices have not gone back down.

Households feel it. EFInA's 2026 access to finance survey lists medical bills among the leading reasons Nigerians borrow, and borrowing for coping and consumption rose to 40.8% of formal borrowing. The result at the counter is partial purchases, skipped refills and incomplete courses, which are bad for the patient and lose the pharmacy the sale.

Where pay-later fits in a pharmacy

PurchaseWhy pay-later helpsWhat to watch
Monthly refills for hypertension, diabetes, asthmaLarge, predictable spend that falls before paydaySet a sensible minimum basket so the fee is worth it
Full courses of antibiotics or antimalarialsPatients finish the course instead of buying a few daysClinical advice comes first; payment never changes the dose
Maternal and baby care bundlesSeveral items bought at once around a birthReturns on unopened items need a clear rule
Devices: glucometers, blood pressure monitors, nebulisersOne-off high-ticket itemsHigher fraud risk with first-time buyers; confirm before handover
Single low-cost itemsRarely helpsThe fee can exceed the margin on cheap generics

The pattern is the same as in other sectors: pay-later works where the purchase is necessary, larger than a typical day's spending and likely to recur. A patient who can spread a monthly refill is also a patient who comes back next month.

Worked example: a monthly refill

A patient on treatment for hypertension and type 2 diabetes needs a month's supply costing ₦45,000. The pharmacy's gross margin on these lines is 20%, so the full sale earns ₦9,000. The figures below are illustrative.

  1. Without pay-later: the patient can manage ₦15,000 today and buys ten days' supply. The pharmacy earns ₦3,000 and hopes the patient returns.
  2. With pay-later at an illustrative 3% fee: the patient takes the full month. The fee is ₦1,350, so the pharmacy keeps ₦7,650 of gross profit.
  3. The difference: ₦4,650 more gross profit on this visit, a patient who stays on treatment, and no debt in the pharmacy's notebook.
  4. The risk case: if the patient could have paid ₦45,000 in cash anyway, the pharmacy is ₦1,350 worse off. That is why the option should be mentioned when price is a problem, not offered to every patient.

The same arithmetic shows why low-value items rarely suit pay-later. On a ₦1,500 pack of paracetamol at a 15% margin, the pharmacy earns about ₦225, and even a modest fee or a fixed per-transaction charge can take most of it. Check how your provider prices small tickets, as covered in pay-later merchant fees in Nigeria.

Rules and professional duties

Offering credit does not change your obligations as a pharmacy, and it adds a few of its own.

  • Clinical decisions stay clinical. The pharmacist decides what is appropriate to dispense. Payment method must never change what is supplied, and prescription-only medicines remain prescription-only.
  • Credit is the patient's choice. The FCCPC's 2025 digital lending regulations require credit to be opt-in, with each use actively requested by the consumer. Offer it; do not suggest a patient buys more because they have a limit.
  • Use a registered lender. Lenders must be registered with the FCCPC or licensed by the CBN, and partnerships need a Commission-approved agreement.
  • Keep health and credit data apart. The provider needs payment details, not diagnoses. Health information is sensitive, and the Nigeria Data Protection Act 2023 applies to what you collect.
  • Price fairly. Keep one shelf price whatever the payment method.

Practical set-up for a pharmacy counter

  1. Decide which lines and basket sizes you will offer it on, starting with chronic-condition refills.
  2. Agree the refund rule: most medicines cannot be returned once dispensed, so say so before the patient pays.
  3. Let the patient complete the payment on their own phone; staff never handle a patient's PIN.
  4. Wait for confirmation before handing over medicine, as with a transfer.
  5. Keep the confirmation reference with the sale so it can be matched to the provider's settlement.
  6. After 90 days, review: are refill patients coming back, and has the share of partial purchases fallen?

If you already run a notebook of patients who pay later, read running your own store credit vs using a provider before deciding whether to stop extending new informal credit.

Where Pryme fits

Pharmacies are one of the participating categories for Spaces, Pryme's merchant network for pay-later in Nigeria only. Patients with a Pryme account may be offered a naira spending limit based on how they run their account, and they see and accept the full agreement before anything is drawn. The credit is lent to the customer by Solid Allianze Microfinance Bank Ltd, a CBN-licensed microfinance bank; Pryme Financial provides the technology. A Spaces limit can be spent only with businesses that have joined Spaces, so a patient holding one can use it at a participating pharmacy but not at the one down the road that has not joined. Before you join, ask in writing for the merchant fee, settlement timing and how refunds and returns are handled, at support@mypryme.com.

For patients paying in full, Checkout takes bank transfers free of charge. The parent guide sets out how point-of-sale credit works for Nigerian businesses.

Questions people ask

Can a pharmacy in Nigeria offer buy now pay later?

Yes, through a lender registered with the FCCPC or licensed by the CBN. The patient takes the medicine, the provider pays the pharmacy, and the patient repays the provider over time.

Who pays if a patient does not repay for their medicine?

Under most pay-later agreements the provider carries that risk and the pharmacy keeps what it was paid. Some agreements allow clawbacks in cases such as fraud, so check whether yours is non-recourse.

Can patients return medicines bought on credit?

Most dispensed medicines cannot be returned for safety reasons, whatever the payment method. Tell patients your returns rule before they pay, and agree with the provider how refunds work for items that can be returned.

Is it worth offering pay-later on cheap medicines?

Usually not. On low-cost items the fee can take most of the margin. Pay-later works best on monthly refills, full courses and devices.

Do pharmacies charge VAT on medicines in Nigeria?

Medical supplies are zero-rated under the Nigeria Tax Act 2025, effective 1 January 2026. A provider's fee to the pharmacy is a separate service and may carry VAT, so check with your accountant.
