Questions

The things people ask us first.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives people and businesses in Nigeria one account that holds Naira alongside dollars, pounds and euros, and a set of agents that do the running of it — keeping the books, chasing what is owed, answering customers and paying bills. Nothing leaves an account without the owner’s approval.

Can I hold dollars, pounds and euros in a Pryme account?

Yes. A Pryme account holds Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros side by side on one ledger, each with its own account details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area. You can swap between them at a rate you set, and every currency has its own statement.

What is Spaces?

Spaces is available in Nigeria. It gives a shopper money to spend that can only be spent with a participating business. The business is paid into its Naira account whether or not the shopper repays, because Pryme carries the credit. For the business it is free to join, there is nothing monthly, and the customer’s identity is never shown — only a reference and what it is worth.

What do the agents on a Pryme Business Account do?

Five agents come with the account. The Chief of Staff runs the week and keeps what is stuck moving. Finance watches the money and keeps the books as you trade. Compliance keeps the filings on time and screens what moves. Sales chases what you are owed. Customer Support answers your customers and follows up. Each has a job description, a budget and a ceiling you set, and each one proposes rather than acts — nothing leaves the account without your signature.

How does Pryme Pay work?

Pryme Pay takes payments on your own site or on a checkout page you control. The buyer is given a one-time account number and transfers to it from any bank app or by USSD — no card, no OTP, nothing to type in. The money lands in the same account your agents are running, already matched to the order and already in your books.

What are Savings Boxes?

Savings Boxes are separate pots inside a Pryme account, held in Naira. Flexible Boxes can be withdrawn at any time, Fixed Boxes hold to a date, Investment Boxes hold for longer, and Interest-free Boxes earn nothing by design. A business can use them to ring-fence payroll and the tax it withholds, so that money cannot be spent by accident.

Who holds my money, and is it protected?

Pryme is a financial technology company, not a bank. Accounts and deposits are provided by Solid Allianze Microfinance Bank Limited, which is licensed by the Central Bank of Nigeria and is a member of the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation.

Can I build on Pryme?

Yes. Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives you one account that holds US dollars, pounds sterling and euros beside Naira, with an assistant that runs the account for you and asks before anything moves. Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, and further markets open as each licence lands.

Can I open a Pryme account from outside Nigeria?

Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, subject to verification and approval. Foreign-currency balances are held and converted inside that account, so you can hold, receive and swap dollars, pounds and euros wherever you are.

Which currencies can I hold with Pryme?

Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros, side by side on one ledger. Each has its own details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area — and each has its own statement.

How do I send money to Nigeria with Pryme?

Swap at a rate you set rather than the rate of the day, then send to any Pryme username or to a Nigerian bank account. There is no fee to send to another Pryme account.

What does the assistant do?

Eva is the assistant inside the Pryme app. She opens accounts, moves money, saves toward your goals, pays what is due and follows up what is owed to you — and asks you before anything moves.

What is Pryme Rails?

Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

Business

Can an employer cut salaries in Nigeria?

A salary cut in Nigeria needs the employee's agreement or a clear contract clause. What the Labour Act says, the risks and how to do it properly.

The short answer

An employer in Nigeria cannot lawfully reduce an employee's agreed salary on its own. A cut needs the employee's consent, a clause in the contract or collective agreement that allows it, or a fresh agreement in writing; otherwise the shortfall remains owed. The Labour Act also bars deductions from wages that the law does not permit.

Why salary is not the employer's to change

Salary is a term of the contract of employment. Section 7 of the Labour Act requires the employer to set out, in writing, "the rates of wages and method of calculation thereof and the manner and periodicity of payment" within three months of the start of employment. Once agreed, that rate binds both sides. Changing it is a change to the contract, and a contract cannot be varied by one party alone.

Two further provisions make a unilateral cut hard to defend:

  • Section 5(1): no deductions may be made from a worker's wages except those permitted by the Act or another law. Paying less than the agreed rate and calling the difference a "deduction" does not get round this.
  • Section 5(7): total deductions in any month cannot exceed one third of that month's wages.

The national minimum wage is a separate floor. Under the National Minimum Wage (Amendment) Act 2024 it is ₦70,000 a month; no cut can take covered staff below it.

The three lawful routes

1. Written consent

The employee agrees to the new rate. Consent should be in writing, specific (the new figure, the start date, whether it is temporary) and freely given. A letter that says "sign or leave" is weak evidence of real consent.

2. A clause already in the contract

Some contracts or collective agreements allow pay to be reviewed downwards, for example a variable element tied to sales or hours. Where the clause is clear and applied as written, a reduction within its terms is part of the original agreement. A vague clause allowing the employer to "review" pay is less safe for cuts.

3. Collective agreement

In unionised workplaces, a negotiated agreement with the union can cover a pay reduction for the staff it represents.

Whichever route applies, section 7(2) requires the employer to inform the worker of the change in writing not more than one month after it.

  • The unpaid difference stays a debt. Employees can claim it through a labour officer or at the National Industrial Court, as explained in what staff can do about unpaid salaries.
  • An employee may treat a serious unilateral cut as a fundamental breach, resign and claim; the employer then faces a claim about the ending of the contract as well as the arrears.
  • Payroll records stop matching the contract, which complicates PAYE returns and pension schedules.

Worked example: the cost of getting it wrong

Example only. An Abuja firm cuts a supervisor's pay from ₦200,000 to ₦160,000 a month without consent, a 20% cut, for six months.

ItemCalculationAmount
Monthly shortfall₦200,000 - ₦160,000₦40,000
Shortfall over six months₦40,000 x 6₦240,000
Employer pension that should have been paid on it (10%)₦240,000 x 10%₦24,000

If the supervisor claims, the firm may owe the ₦240,000 plus the related pension and any costs. Agreeing a temporary cut in writing at the start would have avoided the dispute.

Alternatives to a straight cut

  • Deferring part of salary under a written agreement, with a date for repayment
  • Pausing bonuses, allowances or overtime that the contract makes discretionary
  • Reducing hours with a matching agreed reduction in pay
  • A freeze on increases rather than a reduction

If cuts are being considered because the business cannot pay, be transparent about the numbers. Staff are more likely to agree a temporary measure with an end date and a review point.

Steps for a lawful reduction

  1. Check the contract, handbook and any collective agreement for a clause on pay changes.
  2. Explain the reason and the proposal to staff, in writing.
  3. Set out the new rate, start date and end or review date.
  4. Obtain each employee's signed agreement; leave time to consider it.
  5. Update payroll, PAYE and pension schedules from the agreed date.
  6. Issue the written notice of change within one month, as section 7(2) requires.

Pay cuts versus lawful deductions

A reduction in the agreed rate is different from a deduction from wages that are still paid at the agreed rate. The Labour Act allows some deductions, such as recovery of a wage advance. Section 4 limits an advance to one month's wages, requires it to be recovered over at least three months, and bars interest on it. Statutory deductions such as PAYE and the employee's pension contribution are permitted by other laws. Fines for lateness or deductions for breakages are a different matter: they need a legal basis and remain within the one-third cap.

Employers sometimes treat a reduction in working days as an automatic pay cut. Section 17 requires an employer to provide work on every day a fit worker presents himself, or pay for that day, unless a collective agreement provides otherwise or there is a temporary emergency beyond the employer's control. Sending staff home without pay for weeks is therefore a pay cut by another name and needs agreement.

Where Pryme fits

When payroll runs from a Pryme Business Account, the Finance agent can prepare a revised payroll from signed agreements and show the before-and-after figures for approval, and the Compliance agent can keep the signed variations with the records; see Compliance agent. For allowed deductions, see which salary deductions are legal.

Questions people ask

Can my employer reduce my salary without my consent in Nigeria?

Not lawfully, unless your contract or a collective agreement clearly allows it. Otherwise the shortfall remains owed and can be claimed.

Is salary cut legal in Nigeria during hard times?

Hard times do not change the contract. A cut is lawful if staff agree in writing or the contract allows it; many employers use temporary written agreements with a review date.

What can I do if my salary was reduced?

Ask for the reason in writing, check your contract, and if you did not agree, claim the difference through a labour officer or the National Industrial Court.

Can an employer pay below minimum wage after a pay cut?

No. The national minimum wage of ₦70,000 under the 2024 Amendment Act is a floor for covered workers.
