Questions

The things people ask us first.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives people and businesses in Nigeria one account that holds Naira alongside dollars, pounds and euros, and a set of agents that do the running of it — keeping the books, chasing what is owed, answering customers and paying bills. Nothing leaves an account without the owner’s approval.

Can I hold dollars, pounds and euros in a Pryme account?

Yes. A Pryme account holds Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros side by side on one ledger, each with its own account details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area. You can swap between them at a rate you set, and every currency has its own statement.

What is Spaces?

Spaces is available in Nigeria. It gives a shopper money to spend that can only be spent with a participating business. The business is paid into its Naira account whether or not the shopper repays, because Pryme carries the credit. For the business it is free to join, there is nothing monthly, and the customer’s identity is never shown — only a reference and what it is worth.

What do the agents on a Pryme Business Account do?

Five agents come with the account. The Chief of Staff runs the week and keeps what is stuck moving. Finance watches the money and keeps the books as you trade. Compliance keeps the filings on time and screens what moves. Sales chases what you are owed. Customer Support answers your customers and follows up. Each has a job description, a budget and a ceiling you set, and each one proposes rather than acts — nothing leaves the account without your signature.

How does Pryme Pay work?

Pryme Pay takes payments on your own site or on a checkout page you control. The buyer is given a one-time account number and transfers to it from any bank app or by USSD — no card, no OTP, nothing to type in. The money lands in the same account your agents are running, already matched to the order and already in your books.

What are Savings Boxes?

Savings Boxes are separate pots inside a Pryme account, held in Naira. Flexible Boxes can be withdrawn at any time, Fixed Boxes hold to a date, Investment Boxes hold for longer, and Interest-free Boxes earn nothing by design. A business can use them to ring-fence payroll and the tax it withholds, so that money cannot be spent by accident.

Who holds my money, and is it protected?

Pryme is a financial technology company, not a bank. Accounts and deposits are provided by Solid Allianze Microfinance Bank Limited, which is licensed by the Central Bank of Nigeria and is a member of the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation.

Can I build on Pryme?

Yes. Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives you one account that holds US dollars, pounds sterling and euros beside Naira, with an assistant that runs the account for you and asks before anything moves. Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, and further markets open as each licence lands.

Can I open a Pryme account from outside Nigeria?

Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, subject to verification and approval. Foreign-currency balances are held and converted inside that account, so you can hold, receive and swap dollars, pounds and euros wherever you are.

Which currencies can I hold with Pryme?

Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros, side by side on one ledger. Each has its own details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area — and each has its own statement.

How do I send money to Nigeria with Pryme?

Swap at a rate you set rather than the rate of the day, then send to any Pryme username or to a Nigerian bank account. There is no fee to send to another Pryme account.

What does the assistant do?

Eva is the assistant inside the Pryme app. She opens accounts, moves money, saves toward your goals, pays what is due and follows up what is owed to you — and asks you before anything moves.

What is Pryme Rails?

Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

OYIRS levies for small businesses in Ibadan: what you must pay

Which state and local government levies an Ibadan shop owner can face, who collects each one, and how to tell a lawful demand from an illegal one.

The short answer

In Ibadan, the state internal revenue service (the agency reported in 2018 as the Oyo State Board of Internal Revenue, now commonly called OYIRS) collects state taxes and levies, while local governments collect items such as shop and market fees, and the state waste body handles refuse charges. Pay only against a written demand notice that names the levy, the amount and the collecting agency, and keep every receipt.

A trader in Ibadan can be approached by several collectors in one month: one for signage, another for the local government, another for waste, sometimes a union. Some are lawful; some are not. This guide explains which bodies can lawfully collect from a small business in Oyo State, the kinds of levies you may see, and how to protect yourself. It is information, not tax advice.

Who collects what

Nigeria splits taxing power between federal, state and local governments. For a small Ibadan shop, three layers matter:

BodyWhat it typically collects from a small shop
State internal revenue service (OYIRS)Personal income tax for sole traders, presumptive or flat taxes on informal businesses, and state levies the law assigns to it
Your local government (e.g. Ibadan North, Ibadan South-West, Akinyele)Shop and kiosk rates, market fees, some signage and permit fees under local bye-laws
State waste management bodyRefuse collection charges, usually through assigned private operators
Federal tax authority (NRS, formerly FIRS)Company income tax and VAT for registered companies above the thresholds; rarely relevant to a one-person shop

Ripples Nigeria reported on 13 July 2018 that the Oyo State Board of Internal Revenue, then chaired by Bicci Alli, launched a ₦10 daily tax for traders and other informal-sector operators, which it said came to ₦3,000 a year, to be collected by agency officials using POS machines. The officials visited markets including Ago-Ilorin market in Mokola. We could not find a current official schedule confirming whether that daily tax still applies in the same form as at October 2026, so ask your market association and the revenue office before you assume it does.

Levies you are likely to be asked for

  • Personal income tax or a flat informal-sector tax, collected by the state revenue service.
  • Shop or business premises rate, usually by the local government where your shop sits.
  • Signage or advertisement fee, for a signboard or painted wall; in many states this has been moved to a state signage agency, so check which body bills it in Oyo before paying.
  • Radio and television licence, which local governments sometimes demand from shops with a TV or radio on display.
  • Waste or environmental charge, billed through the state waste system; see waste collection in Ibadan.
  • Market or union dues, which are not taxes; they are charges of a private association and should not be presented as government levies.

Harmonised bills: what other states have done

Several states have moved towards one consolidated bill for traders so that shops are not chased by many collectors. Nairametrics reported on 8 August 2025 that Enugu State's revenue service charges market traders a single ₦36,000 annual levy covering sanitation, signage, local government tollage and business premises. Edo State's revenue service said on 29 June 2026 that it would issue one consolidated annual demand notice per trader. These are other states' rules and do not apply in Oyo; they show what to ask your own revenue office about. If your market association negotiates a group arrangement with the state or local government, ask for the agreement in writing and confirm which levies it replaces, so you are not billed twice.

How to check a demand before you pay

  1. Ask for a printed demand notice with the agency's name, the levy, the legal basis, the amount and the period covered.
  2. Check the collector's ID card and that the name on it matches the agency on the notice.
  3. Pay into the government account or channel printed on the notice, not cash into a private hand.
  4. Get an official receipt or e-receipt and keep it with your business records.
  5. If you are unsure, take the notice to the nearest revenue office or your local government secretariat and ask them to confirm it.

Worked example: budgeting for the year

Example only, with assumed figures, for a provisions shop in Bodija. If the owner is billed a ₦20,000 shop rate, a ₦15,000 signage fee and ₦2,500 a month for waste, the yearly total is ₦20,000 + ₦15,000 + (₦2,500 × 12 = ₦30,000) = ₦65,000. Setting aside about ₦5,500 a month covers it with a little to spare (₦5,500 × 12 = ₦66,000). Replace these numbers with the ones on your own notices.

Where Pryme fits

Paying levies by transfer leaves a trail, which matters when a collector claims you never paid. A Pryme Business Account lets you send payments and generate a verifiable receipt with VerifyDoc.ai that anyone can check is unaltered. The Compliance agent can keep track of renewal dates and prepare payments for your approval. If you have not registered the business yet, start with registering a business name in Ibadan.

Questions people ask

What is OYIRS?

It is the Oyo State internal revenue body that collects state taxes and levies. Reporting in 2018 called it the Oyo State Board of Internal Revenue; check the name printed on any demand notice you receive.

How much tax does a small shop pay in Ibadan?

There is no single published figure we could confirm for October 2026. In 2018 the state announced a ₦10 daily tax for informal traders; your actual bills are on the demand notices from the revenue service and your local government.

Is signage fee legal in Oyo State?

Signage and advertisement fees can be lawful when charged by the body the law assigns them to. Ask for a demand notice and confirm which agency bills it before you pay.

What should I do if touts collect levies at my shop?

Do not pay cash without a demand notice and official receipt. Report the collector to the revenue office or your local government secretariat.
